From a farming family and early social activism to legal advocacy, her work has focused on women, farmers, rehabilitation, employment and vulnerable communities across Maharashtra and neighbouring regions

INDIA: Advocate Manjeet Kaur Matani has emerged as a social and legal activist in Maharashtra whose work has focused on issues involving vulnerable communities, women’s rights, rehabilitation and access to employment. Her journey from a farming family to legal advocacy has been shaped by an early interest in public affairs and a stated commitment to social service.

Born into a Sikh family, Matani grew up as the only child of her parents. Her father was a farmer. She has often attributed her interest in community service to the example set by her parents, whom she says she watched helping others during her childhood.

Her interest in public issues reportedly began while she was still a student. At a young age, she launched a magazine through which she attempted to raise questions about alleged corruption involving public officials and political figures. Matani has said that the initiative resulted in threats and pressure, experiences that influenced her decision to pursue a career in public service.

While studying in Class 10, she decided to prepare for the Indian Administrative Service. After completing Class 12, she moved to Delhi for higher education, pursuing graduation and postgraduate studies while preparing for the Union Public Service Commission examination.

During her preparation, she met Dr Lohit Matani, an IPS officer. Their shared interest in public service brought them closer and eventually led to marriage. The couple’s professional association with public institutions also exposed Matani to administrative processes and the challenges involved in implementing public policy.

The death of her father later became an important personal turning point. Matani has described the loss as deeply distressing and said that she responded by becoming more involved in social service.

Her experiences with administrative systems eventually encouraged her to study law. According to Matani, she became increasingly convinced that constitutional principles and legal mechanisms were essential for addressing disputes and protecting citizens’ rights. Law subsequently became an important part of her professional and social work.

Over the years, her activities have extended across several districts and cities, including Ramtek, Jalgaon, Amravati, Nagpur, Bhandara, Jabalpur and Nanded. The issues she has worked on have included women’s welfare, de-addiction, employment, farmers’ concerns, sex workers and LGBTQ+ communities, as well as grassroots democratic initiatives.

One area of her work has involved assisting women facing difficult social and economic circumstances. She has also worked with survivors of sexual violence, with efforts focused on rehabilitation and helping women find employment and regain economic independence.

Her activities in Nagpur brought her increasing public recognition. At the same time, Matani says that her involvement in sensitive social and administrative issues resulted in pressure from different quarters. She has maintained that public support helped her continue despite these challenges.

Her subsequent posting and activities in Bhandara brought a renewed focus on de-addiction and women’s issues. Matani has said that the pressure she experienced during this period became severe enough for her to consider leaving India. However, encouragement from local residents persuaded her to continue her work.

The account of her experiences highlights the complex environment in which social activists and legal professionals operate when dealing with issues involving vulnerable communities, public administration and competing interests. At the same time, allegations of threats, pressure or specific interventions require independent documentation and should not be treated as established facts solely on the basis of personal accounts.

What distinguishes Matani’s public journey is the combination of legal education and grassroots engagement. Rather than limiting her work to courtroom practice, she has sought to remain involved in social issues affecting communities beyond the legal profession.

Today, Matani continues to describe public service as a central purpose of her life. Her stated ambition is to remain engaged with people and social causes throughout her lifetime.

Her journey, from a farming household and early student activism to legal advocacy and community work, reflects a sustained interest in using professional knowledge and public engagement to address social concerns. Whether viewed through the lens of law, activism or community service, her career remains closely connected to her belief that constitutional values and public participation can play an important role in supporting people who are often left at the margins of society.
