NASA’s LRO Discovers Luna-25’s Lunar Grave, Marks End of Russia’s Moon Mission

UNITED STATES: NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has located the final resting place of Russia’s ill-fated Luna-25 lunar lander. The discovery comes after Luna-25’s unfortunate crash landing on the lunar surface on August 19, shattering hopes of a successful moon mission.

The fateful impact created a fresh lunar crater, which was detected and documented by the keen-eyed LRO last week, as revealed by NASA officials. LRO’s handlers embarked on the search for Luna-25’s grave, using Roscosmos’ estimated impact site as a starting point.

On August 24, the LRO team captured images of the area with the probe’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC). A comparison between the newly acquired photos and previous images of the same region, taken as recently as June 2022, confirmed the presence of a conspicuous, bright crater.

NASA officials announced on August 31 that this new crater is indeed the result of Luna 25’s impact rather than a natural occurrence. The freshly formed lunar crater measures approximately 33 feet (10 meters) in width and is positioned at about 58 degrees south latitude, situated on the steep inner rim of the moon’s Pontécoulant G crater.

Importantly, it is situated approximately 250 miles (400 kilometers) away from Luna-25’s intended landing site, which was planned for 69.5 degrees south latitude.

Luna-25, which took off on August 10, marked Russia’s return to lunar exploration after a 47-year hiatus. The mission aimed to make a soft landing near the moon’s south pole, an area believed to contain valuable water ice resources crucial for future human lunar endeavors.

However, the mission met an unfortunate end, ceding its ambitions to India’s Chandrayaan-3, which successfully touched down on August 23 and continues to explore the lunar polar region with a lander and a small rover.

As Luna-25’s story concludes on lunar soil, the future of Russia’s lunar exploration efforts remains uncertain, while Chandrayaan-3 marks a triumphant milestone for India in the race to unlock the mysteries of Earth’s celestial neighbor.

Countdown to History: NASA’s OSIRIS-REx Prepares to Land Precious Asteroid Sample on Earth

UNITED STATES: In a major leap towards unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission inches closer to delivering a unique fragment of space history to Earth.

The agency recently completed a pivotal test by retrieving a mock capsule from Utah’s desert expanse, mimicking the landing procedure for the anticipated asteroid sample touchdown next month.

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft embarked on its mission in September 2016 with a focused objective: studying and capturing samples from the formidable near-Earth asteroid Bennu, which spans about 1,650 feet in width.

After scrutinizing the asteroid for nearly two years, the spacecraft faced an unexpected challenge during its sample collection attempt in October 2020. The seemingly solid surface of Bennu gave way like fluid, leading to a more fruitful collection of material than anticipated.

The real payload, containing approximately 8.8 ounces (250 grams) of pristine material from Bennu, is now poised for landing on September 24. “We are now mere weeks away from receiving a piece of solar system history on Earth, and this successful drop test ensures we’re ready,” affirmed Nicola Fox, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.

The asteroid material, considered a time capsule from 4.5 billion years ago, is anticipated to provide unprecedented insights into the formation of our solar system and potentially shed light on the origins of life on Earth.

The research community eagerly anticipates analyzing the material for traces of organic molecules, which are critical to understanding the early chemical building blocks of life.

After touchdown, the capsule will undergo meticulous processing in a secure environment at Utah’s military range before being transported to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. This meticulous curation is part of a comprehensive plan to distribute samples to scientists worldwide for in-depth analysis.

Although the OSIRIS-REx mission is rapidly approaching its climax, its journey will continue with a new destination: the potentially hazardous asteroid Apophis. Slated to arrive at Apophis in 2029, the spacecraft’s extended mission promises further revelations about these enigmatic space wanderers.

Google Bids Farewell to Pixel Pass; Axes All-in-One Subscription Service for Pixel Phones

UNITED STATES: Google has recently declared the discontinuation of its widely known Pixel Pass subscription service. Pixel Pass, which bundled a Pixel phone with premium amenities like YouTube Premium, Google Play Pass, and YouTube Music Premium, will no longer be available for new purchases or renewals starting August 29, 2023.

The announcement was made via Google’s support page, where the company stated, “We continue to evaluate offers based on customer feedback and provide different ways for them to access the best of Google.” This move seems to be part of Google’s ongoing efforts to reshape its product offerings in response to user preferences and market dynamics.

For existing subscribers, Google will honor the two-year term from the date of subscription, allowing them to continue their Pixel Pass benefits until the end of the term.

However, once this term concludes, subscribers will no longer have the option to upgrade to a new phone under the Pixel Pass program. The termination of Pixel Pass will also mark the conclusion of Google’s Preferred Care service contract and device protection coverage.

The Pixel Pass service was presented in two plans, priced at $45 and $55 per month, respectively. Both plans included not only the Pixel phone but also a substantial suite of perks like 200GB of Google One cloud storage and the Google Play Pass, granting users access to a variety of games and apps without any ads or in-app purchases.

As part of this subscription package, Google aimed to offer users a seamless and comprehensive Google ecosystem experience. However, with the service’s discontinuation, it appears that Google will now be focusing on alternative approaches to cater to user needs and preferences.

Despite the closure of Pixel Pass, Google reassured current subscribers that support will continue to be available until their individual subscription terms expire. As the tech giant continues to refine its offerings, users can expect new opportunities and options to engage with the company’s suite of products and services.

Sergio Perez’s Future at Red Bull Hangs in the Balance amidst Internal Strife

0

NETHERLANDS: Sergio Perez’s tenure with the Red Bull Racing team is facing uncertainty, and former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher has pointed a finger at the team’s management as a possible cause for Perez’s recent struggles. Schumacher has highlighted Helmut Marko’s “not warm-hearted way of dealing with Perez” as a factor in the Mexican driver’s slump.

Perez’s challenges this season have been evident, with a series of disappointing qualifying sessions early in the year taking him out of contention for the championship race.

Even when he managed to secure a better starting position, his teammate Max Verstappen’s dominance kept momentum firmly on the Dutchman’s side.

As the points gap between Perez and Verstappen continues to widen—139 points according to recent tallies—Red Bull’s top brass, Marko and Christian Horner, are seemingly at odds about Perez’s future.

While Horner asserts that Perez will retain his seat in 2024, Marko’s statements about uncertainties in Formula 1 and performance-related discussions suggest a more complex situation.

Ralf Schumacher has sided with Marko’s perspective, suggesting that Perez’s performance may have been affected by the team’s management style. Schumacher noted Perez’s recent mistakes on the track and his general demeanor, speculating that “Perez as a guy can’t deal with that so well.”

Schumacher even went as far as predicting an impending separation between Perez and Red Bull after this season. Should Perez indeed part ways with Red Bull, the team has various options to consider.

Candidates within the Red Bull junior program include Yuki Tsunoda, Daniel Ricciardo, and Liam Lawson. While Lawson’s recent debut garnered attention, Schumacher believes he’s more suited for AlphaTauri.

Intriguingly, Schumacher envisions McLaren’s Lando Norris as a potential replacement for Perez. Noting the apparent camaraderie between Norris and Verstappen, Schumacher speculated that Verstappen might have a say in choosing his teammate, a concept not unfamiliar in F1’s history.

However, Norris’s existing contract with McLaren through 2025 may present obstacles to such a partnership. As the F1 season continues to unfold, the uncertain future of Sergio Perez within the Red Bull team remains a topic of speculation and debate, adding an extra layer of intrigue to an already captivating championship race.

Prepare for the Spectacular Super Blue Moon: The Celestial Show on August 30

0

CANADA: As the night of August 30 approaches, celestial enthusiasts and skywatchers are gearing up to witness a captivating cosmic event: the Super Blue Moon. While this phenomenon might sound extraordinary and rare, a closer look reveals the intriguing science behind the spectacle.

The term “supermoon” has become a buzzword in recent years, capturing the attention of mainstream media and sky enthusiasts alike. However, its origin lies not in astronomy but in astrology, coined by an astrologer who described it as a “full moon occurring near its closest approach to Earth.”

On August 30, at noon ET, the moon will indeed reach perigee, its closest point to Earth in its orbit, at a distance of 221,942 miles (357,181 km). Intriguingly, this full moon will be the second one in August, thus earning it the moniker “Blue Moon.”

Despite the name, the moon won’t appear blue, maintaining its customary yellow-white hue. The overlapping of a supermoon and a Blue Moon creates the whimsical term “Super Blue Moon.”

Yet, the frequent usage of the term “supermoon” might be watered down, as the moon approaching perigee is a regular occurrence, happening around once every 413 days on average. This blending of astronomical occurrences and branding has led to the labeling of multiple full moons as supermoons each year.

While expectations might be high, the apparent size difference between a supermoon and a regular full moon isn’t as noticeable as it might seem. Similarly, the increase in brightness is subtle, and the much-hyped “moon illusion” might play a role in making the moon appear larger, especially when it’s near the horizon.

Adding to the excitement, the planet Saturn is set to photobomb this celestial show, positioned about 5 and a half degrees above the moon on the night of August 30.

As with many celestial events, the anticipation often exceeds the actual visual impact. Nonetheless, the Super Blue Moon provides an excellent opportunity for both novice and experienced skywatchers to connect with the wonders of our universe.

Whether observing the larger-than-life moon or the distant Saturn, this cosmic display offers a chance to gaze upward and appreciate the grandeur of the cosmos. So mark your calendars and prepare for a night of celestial wonder on August 30.

Microsoft Launcher Beta Unveils Seamless Bing Chat Integration for Android Users

UNITED STATES: Microsoft has taken a step forward in enhancing user accessibility by testing a novel approach to accessing Bing Chat on Android devices. The beta version of Microsoft Launcher now offers a convenient and expedited means to utilize the AI-powered chatbot directly from the app’s search bar.

The innovative feature was first brought to light by a user known as ‘Xeno’ on the social media platform X (previously Twitter). Since this revelation, a substantial number of users have eagerly downloaded the beta version of Microsoft Launcher to experience firsthand the integration of Bing Chat.

From the provided screenshots, it is apparent that Microsoft has seamlessly integrated Bing Chat into the search bar of the launcher. This integration allows users to effortlessly engage with the chatbot from any location within the launcher with a simple downward swipe. This eliminates the need to initiate the Bing app or navigate to Edge on the Android device, making the information-seeking process much more efficient.

The user interface of Bing Chat within Microsoft Launcher mirrors its appearance and functionality across other applications. Users can select from three distinct conversational styles—creative, balanced, and precise—similar to how it is available on Edge, Swiftkey, and the Bing app on Android.

In addition to the Bing Chat integration, the beta version of Microsoft Launcher introduces a new ‘Bing Search’ widget. Differing from the Bing app widget, this new widget boasts transparency and a minimalist design, offering users an uncluttered visual experience.

Although Microsoft Surface Duo devices feature Microsoft Launcher as the default launcher, updates are delivered separately through monthly system updates. As of now, it remains uncertain when or if the Bing Chat integration will be extended to these devices.

Unlike the AI Windows Copilot for Windows 11, which possesses system modification capabilities on PCs, the Bing Chat window within Microsoft Launcher maintains its focus on querying and retrieving internet-based information.

Microsoft’s recent efforts have seen Bing Chat integration across several of its products, including Edge, Swiftkey, and Microsoft 365. Just this month, the company expanded access to Bing Chat on third-party browsers such as Google Chrome and Apple Safari, showcasing a commitment to enhancing user engagement and accessibility across platforms.
