Verstappen Sets Fastest Time in Second Practice Session as Leclerc Crashes Out

UNITED STATES: Max Verstappen of Red Bull set the fastest time in the second practice session of the Miami Grand Prix on Friday, as Charles Leclerc crashed his Ferrari into the wall. Verstappen had been battling Leclerc for the top spot earlier in the session but pulled away with a time of 1:28.255. On the other hand, Leclerc lost valuable track time due to his crash at Turn 7.

Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin quickly got into the push laps, but Red Bull set the early benchmark, with Verstappen clocking a time of 1:30.146. 

Leclerc then decided to break FP1’s record by setting a time of 1:29.4. Kevin Magnussen, however, nearly completed a nightmare Friday for Haas as he spun and hit the wall at Turn 14.

Verstappen eventually reduced the gap between him and Leclerc to just a tenth of a second. 

Meanwhile, Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz completed the early top four, with Perez showing his potential by setting a purple Sector 1. 

However, he received a black and white warning flag for crossing the pit-entry line on returning to the Red Bull garage.

The switch to soft rubber brought significant gains, and Lando Norris set a time of 1:28.741 as the new time to beat. However, more was needed to beat Verstappen’s time, as he lowered the benchmark to 1:28.255. 

Sainz led the charge for Ferrari, reducing Verstappen’s buffer to only 0.06 seconds. Meanwhile, Alex Albon struggled with his slippery Williams, while Lewis Hamilton struggled with Turn 7 in his Mercedes.

With around 20 minutes left in the session, Verstappen pulled away from Sainz by almost four-tenths of a second. Drivers began their usual routine of piecing together race simulations, gathering vital data on the tyre compounds. 

However, Leclerc’s crash stopped the session with five minutes to go. Verstappen’s fast lap time and consistent pace during the session indicate that Red Bull is in a strong position going into the Grand Prix on Sunday. 

On the other hand, Leclerc’s crash will be a setback for Ferrari as they look to gain ground on their rivals.

NASA’s LunaH-Map CubeSat Heading Towards Doom as Mission Nears End

UNITED STATES: Time is running out for NASA’s LunaH-Map CubeSat as attempts to fix a stuck valve in the spacecraft’s propulsion system come to a close. Launched last November as part of the Artemis 1 mission, LunaH-Map was one of 10 CubeSats launched as ride-along payloads in NASA’s moon-bound Artemis program.

LunaH-Map’s mission was to map the abundance and distribution of water ice near the moon’s south pole. However, the spacecraft failed to perform a crucial engine burn five days after liftoff and did not get into lunar orbit as planned.

Since then, mission team members have tried troubleshooting the issue, but to no avail. Craig Hardgrove of Arizona State University, the principal investigator, has warned that they will likely end operations by the end of May if they cannot ignite the propulsion system. 

The delay of the Artemis 1 mission may be the root cause of the problem that afflicted LunaH-Map, as the design of the propulsion system could not withstand a launch delay longer than four or five months, which the team promptly communicated to NASA.

LunaH-Map was not the only Artemis 1 CubeSat to have issues after liftoff. Japan’s OMOTENASHI spacecraft suffered communications issues that prevented it from dropping a tiny lander on the lunar surface. 

The NEA Scout, which aimed to solar-sail to a near-Earth asteroid and then study the rock up close, lost connection with ground control after the Nov. 16 launch.

Despite the issues, the mission teams of all the Artemis 1 CubeSats received commendations for their work.

Hardgrove said that it is unfair to characterise any of the issues as a failure. The agency considers Artemis 1 an overall success, sending an uncrewed Orion capsule back to lunar orbit. 

NASA is now preparing to launch Artemis 2, which will send four astronauts around the moon in late 2024, followed by Artemis 3, which will touch down near the lunar south pole a year or so later.

Mercedes Dominates Opening Practice in Miami, Haas Driver Nico Hulkenberg Crashes Out Early

UNITED STATES: Mercedes made a strong start in the first practice session of the Miami Grand Prix, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton taking the top two spots on the time sheets. However, the session was not without incident, as Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg crashed into the wall at Turn 3 early on, causing a red flag.

Max Verstappen looked to have the session under control for much of the hour-long practice, but Mercedes showed their true pace in the final stages of the session, with Russell and Hamilton setting blistering times on soft tyres. The session began in scorching conditions, with track temperatures reaching 48 Celsius. 

Kevin Magnussen was the first to set a time on the medium tyres, while George Russell suffered from a vibrating steering wheel and had to spend half the session in the pits getting it fixed. Verstappen initially went fastest on the hard tyres, with Sergio Perez struggling to match his teammate’s pace. 

Nyck de Vries had a tough start, spinning at Turn 12/13, and the stewards noted him for potentially dangerous driving. However, they took no further action against him.

Verstappen continued to improve his time, despite the dusty track conditions and eventually set a time of 1:31.8 on the soft tyres. 

However, Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari managed to narrow the gap to just 0.25 seconds, putting Ferrari back in the game.

But it was Mercedes who had the final say, as Russell and Hamilton went on a flying lap on soft tyres to take the top two spots on the time sheets, with Russell setting a time of 1:30.125, two-tenths clear of Hamilton.

Despite Hulkenberg’s crash early on, Haas did manage to put in a strong performance, with Hulkenberg and teammate Kevin Magnussen both setting times in the top 10. 

However, whether they can maintain this form over the rest of the race weekend remains to be seen.

Overall, the opening practice session in Miami showed that Mercedes might have the pace to compete with Red Bull and Ferrari and that George Russell continues to impress in his second season with the team. 

With the track temperatures set to remain high for the rest of the weekend, it promises to be an exciting race in Miami.

One of the most famous proponents of this idea is Nick Bostrom, a professor at Oxford University and the founder of the Future of Humanity Institute.

In 2003, he published a paper titled “Are You Living in a Computer Simulation?” where he argued that one of the following three propositions must be true:

1. The human species will likely go extinct before reaching a “posthuman” stage, where it can create realistic simulations of its ancestors.

2. Any civilization post-human is unlikely to run simulations of its evolutionary history or variations thereof for ethical, practical, or other reasons.

3. Humans are almost certainly living in a simulation.

This animated short series will introduce the Star Wars universe, featuring mini lightsabers and gentle themes of kindness, compassion, and cooperation.

Lucasfilm had been searching for a format for years that was suitable for introducing young children to the Star Wars universe and finally found it in “Young Jedi Adventures.”

The 25 episodes in “Young Jedi Adventures” are composed by Canada’s Icon Studios and set in the High Republic period, 200 years before the Skywalker Era.

The episodes feature Jedi younglings learning the ways of the Force from Master Yoda at a temple outpost on the exotic planet Tenoo.

The series’ vocal cast includes Juliet Donenfeld, Jamaal Avery Jr., Dee Bradley Baker, Emma Berman, Jonathan Lipow, and Piotr Michael.

The series executive producers are James Waugh, Jacqui Lopez, and Josh Rimes from Lucasfilm.

Michael Olson, the head writer, showrunner, and executive producer of the series, stated that the aim was to ensure that the show felt aspirational for kids while maintaining the “soul and quality and expectations of what a good ‘Star Wars’ story could be.”

Olson added that the team used the High Republic era as a canvas to create an expansive and fresh new world in which characters could explore new cultures.

The time needed to charge the Praise Pro and iPraise+ is three and five hours, respectively.

New Alzheimer’s Drug Trial Offers Hope for Slowing Disease Progression

UNITED STATES: Alzheimer’s disease affects tens of millions of people each year, slowly stripping away cognitive function.

Researchers have been looking for a drug that could slow or even stop its progression for years.

Recently, a new drug trial by Eli Lilly offered the best hope of slowing the disease’s inevitable progression.

According to Eli Lilly’s statement, Donanemab “significantly slowed the cognitive and functional decline in people with early symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease.”

The test subjects who suffered from Alzheimer’s received the drug during the 18-month-long trial and showed a 35% slower memory decline.

They also displayed better cognitive function and ability to manage daily tasks, as measured by the integrated Alzheimer’s Disease Rating Scale (iADRS) scale.

The drug could also benefit those in the intermediate and advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

Participants in intermediate and advanced stages of the disease showed a 29% and 22% slower progression of symptoms, respectively.

The destructive effects of Alzheimer’s disease on both patients and their families are well known.

Even more so given the ineffectiveness of previous attempts to reduce the disease progression rate.

With this news, people with Alzheimer’s and their families have some hope to slow down the disease that once seemed as inevitable as it was unstoppable.

Daniel Skovronsky, M.D., PhD, president of Lilly Research Laboratories, said that the company’s scientists have trailblazed in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease over the last 20 years.

Lilly scientists have elucidated the basic mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease pathology and discovered imaging and blood biomarker tools to track the pathology.

He expressed his pleasure in Donanemab, which yielded positive clinical results with impressive statistical significance for people with Alzheimer’s disease in the trial.

He added that this is the first Phase 3 trial of any Alzheimer’s investigational medicine to deliver a 35% reduction in clinical and functional activity decline.

While the new drug represents a significant breakthrough in the fight against Alzheimer’s, it is not a cure.

Even patients who respond positively to the new drug will experience declining cognitive functions with the progression of the disease, albeit at a slower pace than before.

Nonetheless, the trial offers cautious optimism to those affected by Alzheimer’s disease, with experts describing the results as “real” and “clinically meaningful.”

It is possible to overhype any progress towards a treatment, given the little good news in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

However, the results of this Phase 3 clinical trial are undoubtedly promising. Eli Lilly will proceed with global regulatory submissions as quickly as possible and is considering submitting a report to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this quarter.

The drug could be a game-changer for millions of people affected by Alzheimer’s disease, offering hope for a brighter future.
