FIA President Ben Sulayem Steps Down as First Point of Contact for F1

0

UNITED KINGDOM: FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has stepped down from his hands-on role with F1 after a letter to teams confirmed his decision.

The former rally driver has been controversial since taking on the role of FIA president in December 2021.

Ben Sulayem has been in the limelight for his views on potential new F1 teams and a rumoured sale of the series, as well as for banning the drivers from showing or making political statements at any event sanctioned by the FIA without prior permission.

His election as FIA president came with a promise to settle into a more stand-off role regarding his involvement in F1.

The FIA’s statement confirmed that Ben Sulayem’s decision to step back from his hands-on role in Formula 1 was part of his manifesto before he was elected.

The 61-year-old has used social media as an outlet for his views. His posts caused a stir with comments on a rumoured $20 billion takeover of F1 and his disappointment in the frosty reception by F1 and the teams to General Motors’ interest in entering the sport alongside Andretti.

In his letter to team bosses, Ben Sulayem stated that his objective was to be a non-executive president and that recruiting a team of professional managers has now been largely completed.

He also mentioned that from now on, the day-to-day contact for all matters related to F1 would be Nikolas Tombazis, director of single-seater racing, and his team. At the same time, he will focus on strategic issues with his leadership team.

A statement from the FIA confirmed that the president’s manifesto set out a plan for appointing an FIA CEO and introducing a revised governance framework under a leadership team focused on transparency, democracy, and growth.

The statement also mentioned that the structural reorganisation in Formula One is now complete, making this a natural next step for Ben Sulayem.

The change in the FIA’s leadership structure comes at a time when F1 is looking to make significant changes, including potential new teams and a rumoured sale of the series.

With Ben Sulayem stepping down from his hands-on role, F1 teams can expect a more hands-off approach from the FIA, as the day-to-day operations will be handled by Tombazis and his team.

The FIA’s focus on strategic matters and the appointment of an FIA CEO will likely lead to a more streamlined and organised approach to managing the sport.

As Formula One continues to grow and evolve, this change in leadership structure is seen by many fans as a step in the right direction to ensure that the sport remains a leader in global motorsports and mobility.

Sono Motors Sion: Solar Electric Vehicle Passes First Crash Test with Flying Colours

GERMANY: Munich-based start-up Sono Motors is one step closer to delivering an affordable solar electric vehicle (SEV) following the successful completion of the first crash test of its Sion prototype.

Sono Motors’ Sion passes the crash test

The crash test, which took place at CSI in Italy, showed that the vehicle’s proprietary solar panels didn’t splinter, making it safe for passengers and other road users.

Sono Motors plans to carry out around 300 physical components, sledge, and complete vehicle tests before the homologation of the Sion is completed.

The vehicle will also undergo Euro NCAP crash tests. In addition to its safety features, the Sion SEV will come with a range of advanced driver assistance systems in the standard version, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist.

The company also plans to add adaptive cruise control after the start of production. However, production of the Sion is currently in limbo as the company still needs to secure the necessary funding.

It has over 21,000 reservation holders but needs 1,650 more orders to secure the funding it requires. The starting price for the Sion is expected to be around 25,000 Euros ($27,000), with a 3,000 Euro ($3,300) deposit when ordering.

The Sono Motors’ Sion is a solar electric vehicle with body panels covered in photovoltaic arrays that can charge the car’s battery when the sun is shining. The company’s mission is to deliver a sustainable and affordable mode of transportation that reduces carbon emissions and reduces the need for fossil fuels.

The successful completion of the first crash test of the Sono Motors Sion is a promising step towards the company’s goal of delivering an affordable solar electric vehicle.

Sono Motors has a long way to go before it reaches its funding goals, but the support of over 21,000 reservation holders gives us hope that the Sion will one day hit the roads.

Suspected Chinese Spy Balloon Shot Down by US Fighter Jet, Sparks International Tensions

0

UNITED STATES: Tensions have escalated between the United States and China after a suspected Chinese spy balloon was shot down by a US fighter jet over the Atlantic Coast on February 4th.

US fighter jet shot down Chinese balloon over Myrtle beach

According to Air Force General Glen VanHerck, the balloon was approximately 200 feet tall, and the attached payload weighed a couple of thousand pounds.

In a press conference, General VanHerck spoke about the potential hazards posed by the balloon, including the glass on its solar panels, materials required for the batteries to operate in a harsh environment, and even the possibility of explosives.

He did not rule out the possibility of explosives on the balloon, which reportedly played a role in the decision to shoot it down over open water.

The head of the US Northern Command (NORCOM) and North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has expressed concerns over the potential hazards of large debris falling from the sky.

He spoke about the “domain awareness gap” that the US needs to figure out, as these high-altitude spy balloons have briefly flown over the US undetected at least three times in the past six years.

General VanHerck also did not rule out the possibility of explosives on the balloon, which reportedly played a critical role in his decision to shoot it over open water.

The US has recovered some remnants from the surface of the sea and will be able to examine the debris better in the upcoming days. The incident has caused an uproar in the US and has prompted the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, to postpone his scheduled unofficial trip to China.

The relations between the two countries have become strained, and White House national security spokesperson John Kirby stated that the incident had done nothing to improve the already escalating tensions. However, US President Joe Biden stated that they made it clear to China what they would do and did the right thing.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre added that Washington’s approach to relations with Beijing would remain calm, and it’s up to China to figure out what kind of relationship they want. China, on the other hand, has accused the US of using “indiscriminate force” and overreacting, warning about “serious repercussions”

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that the balloon is not American and that the Chinese government will defend its legitimate rights and interests.

The search for debris from the suspected Chinese spy balloon is underway as the incident raises international tensions and raises questions about the safety and security of US airspace.

Gaziantep Castle: A Symbol of History Reduced to Rubble in Turkey’s Earthquake

0

TURKEY: Gaziantep Castle situated in the Gaziantep city (Turkey) was shaken to its core on February 6th, 2023, when a devastating earthquake struck the region, destroying much of its historic buildings and landmarks.

Gaziantep Castle destroyed in earthquake

One of the most significant losses was the Gaziantep Castle, symbolising the city’s rich history and cultural heritage. The castle, also known as the Kaletepe Castle, was a massive fortress that stood on a hill overlooking the city.

The castle was believed to have been built in the 12th century. It was an important stronghold during the Ottoman Empire. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and renovated, symbolising the city’s power and military prowess.

The earthquake that struck Gaziantep on February 7th was one of the most powerful in the region’s history, with a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale. The intense shaking caused widespread damage throughout the city, and the Gaziantep Castle was one of the most significant casualties.

The ancient walls and towers of the castle crumbled to the ground, reducing the once-impressive fortress to a pile of rubble. The loss of the Gaziantep Castle is a devastating blow to the city’s people and the wider Turkish community.

The castle symbolised the city’s rich history and cultural heritage, and its destruction is a loss for Gaziantep and the entire world. The castle was one of the few remaining examples of Ottoman military architecture, and its destruction is a tragedy for the preservation of cultural heritage.

The destruction of the Gaziantep Castle is also a reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness and the need for more robust building codes and earthquake-resistant construction.

The earthquake has brought to light the vulnerability of many of the city’s historical buildings, and it serves as a warning to other cities and countries to be better prepared for natural disasters.

Gaziantep’s people have come together to rebuild their city and restore its heritage in the aftermath of the earthquake. The Turkish government has pledged to support the rebuilding effort, and international aid organisations have also pledged their support.

The people of Gaziantep are determined to restore the city to its former glory and rebuild the Gaziantep Castle, representing their resilience and determination.

The loss of the castle is a tragedy, but it is also an opportunity for the city to emerge stronger and more prepared for the future.

Reliving the Day Kapil Dev Conquered Test Cricket with the Monumental 432nd Wicket

0

INDIA: It was a historic moment in Test cricket as Kapil Dev, India’s legendary fast bowler, broke the long-standing record of most Test match wickets held by Richard Hadlee of New Zealand.

On the 8th of February, 1994, Kapil Dev took his 432nd wicket in a Test match against Sri Lanka, surpassing Hadlee’s mark of 431 wickets and cementing his place in cricketing history.

Kapil Dev was born in January 1959 in Chandigarh, India. He made his international debut in 1978 and quickly established himself as one of the best fast bowlers in the world.

He was known for his ability to swing the ball both ways, making him a fearsome opponent for batters.

Throughout his career, Kapil Dev was known for his aggressive style of play and never-say-die attitude.

He played 131 Test matches for India, taking 434 wickets at an average of 29.64. He also represented India in 225 One-Day Internationals, taking 253 wickets and scoring 3,783 runs.

Kapil Dev’s most outstanding achievement was breaking Richard Hadlee’s record for the most wickets in Test cricket.

Hadlee, who played for New Zealand, was considered one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time and held the record for over a decade.

His record-breaking feat came in the third Test match against Sri Lanka in Delhi, where he dismissed veteran Sri Lankan opener Hashan Tilakaratne.

Kapil held the record for eight years before it was broken by another all-time great, Courtney Walsh. This shows how long and steady Kapil was.

Kapil Dev’s achievement was a significant moment for Indian cricket, as he became the first Indian player to break a major world record in the sport.

The record-breaking performance was a turning point in Indian cricket history. It inspired a whole new generation of young cricket players and gave the country a sense of pride.

To this day, Kapil Dev remains one of India’s greatest cricketers and is widely regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time.

His performance in 1994, when he broke a record, is remembered as one of the best in Indian cricket. It shows how talented and important he was to the sport.

Despite the records and accolades, Kapil Dev remained humble and down-to-earth throughout his career.

He is known for his warm personality and sportsmanship, and he remains a beloved figure in Indian cricket.

Kapil Dev’s legacy inspires young cricketers, and his record-breaking performance will always be remembered as a turning point in Indian cricket history.

The Worst is Yet to Come, Warn Seismologists after Turkey-Syria Earthquake

UNITED STATES: A devastating magnitude-7.8 earthquake hit south-eastern Turkey and parts of Syria early in the morning on February 6th, causing more than 5,000 deaths and thousands of injuries.

2000 buildings were destroyed due to the Turkey earthquake

The quake was followed by another seismic event which registered 7.5 on the Richter scale nine hours later and over 200 aftershocks.

The aftershocks have caused further damage to buildings and made the rescue efforts even more challenging.

The majority of Turkey sits on the Anatolian plate, which is squeezed out towards the west. This squeeze arises due to the collision between the Arabian plate and the southern rim of Eurasia.

A geoscientist at the Open University, UK, David Rothery, said that Turkey is moving west around 2 centimetres a year along the East Anatolian fault and that half the length of the faultline is now lit up with earthquakes.

Seyhun Puskulcu, a seismologist from the Turkish Earthquake Foundation, adds that people in Turkey are well aware of their vulnerability to earthquakes.

The earthquake’s epicentre was located around 26 km East of Nurdagi, a city in Gaziantep province, Turkey, at a depth of 17.9 km. The later magnitude-7.5 event was 4 km southeast of Ekinözü in Kahramanmaraş province.

The US Geological Survey warns that the southern Turkey population lives in structures vulnerable to earthquake shaking, with many buildings made of unreinforced brick masonry and low-rise concrete frames.

A study published last year suggested that Gaziantep would experience medium to severe damage from a magnitude-6.5 earthquake. The situation is even worse in Syria, where over a decade of conflict has decimated building standards.

Yesterday’s earthquake reached Syria’s north-western regions, causing buildings to collapse in Aleppo and Idlib. The buildings that have been rebuilt after the conflict used low-quality materials or “whatever materials are available,” said Rothery.

Researchers warn that people need to brace themselves for more earthquakes, aftershocks, and deteriorating weather. Ilan Kelman, a researcher who studies disasters and health at University College London, said, “The possibility for major aftershocks causing even more damage will continue for weeks and months.”

He added that the weather forecast for the region is dropping below freezing, so people trapped in the rubble and who might be rescued could well freeze to death.

UNITED KINGDOM: Alfa Romeo and Sauber have revealed the final car under their partnership, the Stake-branded C43 for the 2023 F1 season.

Alfa Romeo adds C43 to its F1 team

As Audi is set to join the sport in 2026, Alfa Romeo will exit F1 after this season, making the C43 the last car to carry their branding and the iconic dark red and black livery.

The Alfa Romeo C43 is an evolution of last year’s car with a few modifications, including changes to the mirrors and the roll hoops. The most significant change is to the floor, as the FIA has implemented new regulations to minimize porpoising.

The regulations for the 2023 F1 season have resulted in the floor edges being raised by 15mm, the diffuser throat height being raised, and the diffuser edge stiffness being increased.

Technical director Jan Monchaux acknowledged the challenges posed by the new regulations but expressed satisfaction with the progress made. The C43 will be raced by Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu, with the same line-up as last season.

Alfa Romeo is looking to improve in all areas and be more consistent, but specific targets still need to be set. The newly appointed team representative, Alessandro Alunni Bravi, has declined to set any targets for the 2023 F1 season but aims to improve in all areas and be more consistent.

Former team boss Fred Vasseur moved to Ferrari during the season break, with Sauber signing McLaren’s Andreas Seidl as the new CEO. Alfa Romeo Sauber will conduct a shakedown in Spain before making its on-track debut on 23 February at the Bahrain International Circuit.

There is one significant change in the off-season: former team boss Fred Vasseur moved to Ferrari, and Sauber signed McLaren’s Andreas Seidl as the new CEO. Seidl will focus on the upcoming partnership with Audi, while Bravi will represent Alfa Romeo at grand prix weekends.

The final curtain is about to fall for the Alfa Romeo Formula 1 team, but they would like to go out with a bang with their last machine, the Stake-branded C43.
