All-Rounder India Defeat New Zealand by 8 Wickets, Clinch 3-match ODI Series

INDIA: Indian bowlers led by Mohammed Shami ran through New Zealand’s batting line-up to restrict the Kiwis to 108 inside thirty-five overs. Each Indian bowler had a scalp to their name.

Indian openers stitched a 72-run partnership to put the game beyond the Kiwis’ reach. After India lost two quick wickets, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan knocked off the remaining runs to help India register its second win in the 3-match ODI series.

Mohammed Shami rocked the New Zealand innings in the first over right away by disturbing Finn Allen’s timber. He struck again in the seventh over when he caught Daryl Mitchell off his own bowling.

Mohammed Siraj, Hardik Pandya, and Shardul Thakur chipped in with a wicket each to reduce New Zealand to 15/5 in the eleventh over. 

Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell put together 41 runs for the sixth wicket before Shami returned to clean up the latter. Phillips then joined forces with Mitchell Santner to get New Zealand a decent score. 

Once Hardik Pandya dismissed Santner in the thirty-first over, the Kiwi tail-enders didn’t last long. Washington Sundar cleaned Phillips and Lockie Ferguson before Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Blaire Tickner to wrap up the Kiwi inning at 108.

Indian Inning 

Skipper Rohit Sharma and double centurion from the previous game, Shubman Gill, gave India a flying start. 

Unlike their Kiwi counterparts, the duo looked at ease while facing the pacers. Sharma, in particular, looked in sublime touch as he toyed with the bowling attack. He smacked Lockie Ferguson for a six in the fifth over for the first six of the game.

Sharma bought up his half-century in the thirteenth over with a single. He lost his wicket in the fifteenth over to a Henry Shipley delivery, which stayed low and caught him plumb in front of the wickets.

Shubman Gill, at the other end, switched gears and hit a flurry of boundaries in the company of Virat Kohli to take India within touching distance of a dominating win. 

Kohli, however, lost his wicket to Santner. Kohli played at the delivery and lost his balance in the process. Latham, behind the stumps, caught him outside the crease and whipped the bails off the stumps.

Gill took India to an emphatic 8-wicket win with a boundary off the first ball of the twenty-first over.

Mohammad Shami received the Player of The Match award for his watch-winning bowling effort with figures of 6-1-18-3 which stopped New Zealand from getting a good start.

Pokhara Airport’s Lack of Landing Guidance System Contributed to Fatal Plane Crash

NEPAL: An official at Nepal’s Pokhara International Airport revealed that the airport, where the plane carrying 72 passengers crashed minutes before landing, did not have a functioning landing guiding system that helps planes land safely on runways.

Pilots who struggle with visibility are assisted in maintaining visual contact with the ground and any obstacles in their way by a landing guiding system or instrument landing system.

A spokesperson for Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority, Jagannath Niroula, told a news agency that the situation won’t change until February 26, 56 days after the airport opened for business.

China helped build the airport as a part of the infrastructure project for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). 

The Nepali government entered into a $215.96 million soft loan agreement with Beijing in 2016 to construct the airport in the tourist city.

Even though the instrument landing system was still inoperable at the time of the crash, according to reports, Sunday’s conditions were favorable, with low winds and clear skies.

An expert suggested that a “notorious bad air safety culture” in Nepal and the absence of an instrument landing system might have been “contributory causes” of the accident. He said that pilots have trouble seeing in the air since mountains surround Nepal.

Amit Singh, an experienced pilot and the founder of India’s Safety Matters Foundation, told the news agency that flying in Nepal becomes challenging if the pilots don’t have navigational aids.

Singh explained that the lack of navigational aids puts an extra workload on the pilots whenever they experience problems during a flight.

He added that the lack of an instrument landing system demonstrates Nepal’s inadequate air safety culture.

Even though the reason for the crash is still unknown, based on the videos of the plane’s final moments before the crash, it is believed that the ill-fated plane entered a stall.

The flight data and voice recorder in the cockpit of the twin-engine ATR 72-500 aircraft were retrieved by investigators from the crash site on Monday.

According to Yeti Airlines, the flight data recorder will be sent to France, and the cockpit voice recorder will be analysed by investigators locally. The crash investigation has received assistance from French experts.

India Suffer Major Blow as Hardik Singh Ruled Out of Hockey WC

INDIA: India has suffered a significant setback ahead of the India vs. New Zealand Hockey World Cup 2023 Crossover match on Sunday, January 22, after a severe injury to its star player, Hardik Singh.

Midfielder Hardik Singh, the nation’s best player in the first two matches of the tournament, sustained a hamstring injury during the second Pool match against England. Hardik Singh did not play against Wales and has been ruled out of the tournament today.

Hardik’s absence will be a significant setback for India, who have struggled offensively and are likely to face defending champion Belgium in the quarterfinals if they beat New Zealand.

Raj Kumar Pal will take Hardik’s place, who scored a brilliant solo goal in India’s 2-0 win over Spain in their opening match, as an alternate.

Chief Coach Graham Reid stated, referring to the team management’s decision, that they had to make the difficult decision overnight. 

India will replace Hardik Singh in its team for Sunday’s match against New Zealand and the World Cup matches that will follow the crossover match.

Reid added that even though the injury was not as severe as the initial incident suggested, time was not on India’s side.

The management decided to replace Hardik with Raj Kumar Pal after today’s comprehensive rehabilitation process and functional and on-field assessments.

Although it is incredibly disappointing for Hardik, India is excited about Raj Kumar joining the team for the remaining World Cup matches, Reid added.

India must beat New Zealand in the crossover match on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals of the FIH Odisha Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023, Bhubaneswar-Rourkela, where it finished second in Pool D.

India will face New Zealand in the crossover match at 7 p.m. IST on January 22, 2023, in the FIH Odisha Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 at Bhubaneswar-Rourkela.

IIT Madras’ BharOS: A Game-changer for the Indian Mobile Industry

INDIA: An IIT Madras-incubated company has developed a mobile operating system with the assistance of JandK Operations Private Limited to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of making India “Atmanirbhar.”

The OS’s creators have given it the name “BharOS” and stated that it would benefit the nation’s 100 crore mobile phone users.

This software supports off-the-shelf commercial handsets. The OS’s creators assert that it was created to provide users with a safer experience.

The developers of the mobile operating system BharOS say that the OS provides “more freedom, control, and flexibility to choose and use apps that fit the user’s needs.”

This mobile operating system has No Default Apps (NDA), a much-needed respite from unwanted apps. 

Unlike AndroidOS, this will give users access to most of the available storage space.

The original equipment manufacturers include some native apps apart from the Google apps that come preinstalled on the phones. One will not be compelled to use apps they may not be familiar with or trust on BharOS.

Similar to Android phones, one can receive “Native Over the Air” (NOTA) updates. According to the developers, users do not need to manually initiate the process because NOTA updates are automatically downloaded and installed on the device.

In addition, the operating system will provide access to reputable applications from organization-specific Private App Store Services (PASS). 

A PASS grants access to a carefully selected selection of apps that have passed organizations’ stringent security and privacy checks.

The developers stated that users could be confident that the applications they are installing are safe to use and have been checked for any potential security flaws or privacy concerns.

BharOS is currently available to businesses that adhere to stringent privacy and security standards and “whose users handle sensitive information that requires confidential communications on restricted mobile apps.”

INDIA: Germany’s 7-2 victory over South Korea on Friday at the Birsa Munda International Stadium was insufficient to jump Belgium for the top spot, which required a win by eight goals in its final World Cup Pool B match.

With Niklas Wellen’s goal in the first minute, the two-time champions got off to a quick start and set themselves up nicely. 

After Martin Zwicker dispossessed Korea in its half, the ball went to Wellen, who spun away from his defender and scored with a reverse hit.

Germany, led by Andre Henning, had three opportunities to score from penalty corners but failed. Jonghyun Jang hit it low to the right of Alexander Stadler from a penalty corner in the final seconds of the first quarter to give Korea the equalizing goal.

Wellen scored once more in the first minute of the second half. Teo Hinrichs sprinted to find the striker, who ran in front of a defender and hit it on the half-turn. They could not score in the second quarter despite Germany’s possession and circle penetrations.

In the second half, both teams were level, with Moritz Trompertz shooting a tomahawk effort over the bar and Stadler keeping an eye out for two dangerous shots into the goalmouth area. 

It was aggressive hockey from beginning to end, but Germany took the lead from a turnover. Hannes Muller was played in by Thies Prinz, who set up an unmarked Weller to score his hat trick with a quick finish.

From a penalty corner two minutes later, former Argentina international Gonzalo Peillat scored his first World Cup goal for Germany with a fierce drag-flick that deflected off a defender and found the back of the net.

Germany increased their intensity in the final quarter to outscore Belgium and frighten the defending champions. 

After picking up a loose ball, Justus Weigand gave Peillat’s shot from the circle a light touch. Then, in the 52nd minute, Moritz Ludwig and Mats Grambusch scored two goals in a row.

Even though Germany had an 8-minute lead, it could not penetrate the thick Korean defense inside the circle. Korea capitalized on Stadler’s departure in search of goals by winning a penalty corner in the final minute when Jang converted a drag-flick.

In the crossovers on Monday, Germany will face France to advance to the final eight stages.

FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup: Belgium Wallops Japan 7-1 in One-sided Match

INDIA: Belgium defeated Japan 7-1 at the Birsa Munda International Stadium on Friday in its final Pool B World Cup match to set the stage for the knockout rounds.

The Red Lions lead the group with seven points, and Germany, which is in second place and plays South Korea in the evening’s final game, needs to win by nine goals to move ahead of them.

With their quick passing and penetration play, the defending champions displayed an example of attacking hockey. 

Alexander Hendrickx, a drag flick specialist, injured himself in the sixth minute of the game during a penalty corner attempt when he followed through and twisted his right knee.

Despite not winning any of its seven penalty corners, Belgium displayed its offensive prowess with six field goals.

At the end of the first quarter, Cedric Charlier came close to scoring, but Takashi Yoshikawa stopped him twice from close range. 

Belgium’s possession and perseverance paid off in the second quarter with four goals. After Charlier turned away from two defenders inside the circle, Yoshikawa could not stop the forward’s powerful shot.

In a display of his finishing instincts, Tom Boon put Japan on the back foot with a hat trick in six minutes. First, he reverse-fished the ball high into the net after using his strength to get past two defenders. After that, he used a missed clearance to score his second goal and skilfully deflected Sebastien Dockier’s shot to score his third.

Japan created some promising situations in the Belgian half in the first 30 minutes, but Kentaro Fukuda failed to capitalize on his three chances. Fukuda was let loose by a turnover in Belgium’s defense, but Vincent Vanasch was able to block his weak attempt.

In the second half, Japan coach Akira Takahashi kept Belgium quiet in the third quarter with a more robust defense. 

Japan started the fourth quarter with a goal thanks to Fukuda, who got a touch to redirect Seren Tanaka’s backhanded effort.

Japan continued to press the attack with the crowd’s support, but Belgium scored twice against the run of play through Boon and Dockier. 

Boon was involved in a quick interchange in play from the right side to release Dockier, who scored emphatically on the slide after Boon turned the face of his stick to guide Florent van Aubel’s pass.

After winning a penalty stroke, Boon scored his fifth and Belgium’s seventh goal to cap off the night.

INDIA: France and Argentina drew 5-5 in a thrilling Group A match between the two sides on Friday.

France vs Argentina

Argentina got off the mark quickly after the game started through Nicolas Keenan’s goal. France equalized moments later when Blaise Rogeau, playing his 100th match, assisted Etienne Tynevez in slotting the ball into the Argentinean goalpost.

Both teams battled hard in an eventless second quarter, in which either side scored no goals. France earned a penalty corner a few minutes into the second quarter, but Charlet’s shot went wide off the goal. Matteo received a green card for his rough tackle, which meant France was down to ten players for ten minutes.

Monja stole the ball for Argentina and charged into the Les Blues’ circle before scoring. However, the referee disallowed the goal as the back of the stick was involved.

The third quarter witnessed both teams turn up the ante and play aggressively. Argentina broke the deadlock and led 2-1 when Nicolas della Torre flicked the ball past the French defenders and goalkeeper.

France returned quickly through their captain Charlet, who scored the goal and equalized for his side after a referral drama. Argentina asked for a referral against France, against which the referee ultimately ruled.

A few moments later, Charlet scored again and helped France lead 3-2 for the first time in the match. France won a penalty corner when the Argentine defender stopped the aerial ball. Charlet converted the penalty corner.

Nicolas della Torres flicked the ball into the French goalpost in the third quarter’s final minutes to help Argentina equalize 3-3.

Four minutes into the final quarter, France earned a penalty corner which Victor Charlet successfully converted for his hat-trick and France’s lead by 4-3.

Martin Ferreiro equalized for the Argentinians, who kept coming back against the French lead. In the game’s dying moments, Charlet again scored for France to help his side take a 5-4 lead.

However, it didn’t last long after della Torre scored his hat-trick goal with less than five seconds left in the game, and Argentina leveled 5-5 with France.

Nyck de Vries Faces Legal Challenge as 2023 F1 Season Approaches

NETHERLANDS: A Dutch businessman is suing AlphaTauri’s Nyck de Vries for allegedly failing to return a loan. He has found himself in the middle of a legal issue in the Netherlands. De Vries will debut as a full-time F1 driver with AlphaTauri in the Bahrain Grand Prix in March.

Jeroen Schothorst sues Nyck de Vries

The former Formula E World Champion is purportedly being sued by real estate millionaire Jeroen Schothorst for allegedly breaking a debt repayment deal when he was competing in lower motorsport levels, according to claims in Dutch media.

Schothorst is believed to have given him a loan of €250,000 in 2018, as reported by media sources, to assist in funding a transfer to Formula 2 with the Italian team Prema.

According to the study, Schothorst also claimed 50% of de Vries’ earnings from F1-related operations, with an interest rate of 3% annually.

Although the agreement provided that the lender would cancel the loan installments if De Vries was not an F1 driver in 2022, the two parties apparently disagree on whether he should be considered an “F1 driver.”

Schothorst’s argument contends that the loan repayment agreement is still in effect because he served as Mercedes’ backup driver and filled in for the injured Alex Albon at Monza for Williams.

According to De Vries’ attorney, the Dutch driver has repaid Schothorst a total of €190,000, although he did not join the F1 team in time for the original arrangement to be upheld.

A potential distraction for the rookie before his first full season on the grid, Schothorst has already initiated procedures against De Vries. According to reports, the real estate mogul wants to recoup 50% of De Vries’ 2023 salary from AlphaTauri/Red Bull.

Everything indicates that Investrand (Schothorst’s investment business) cannot accept that the Dutch driver entered the F1 in season 2023 rather than the final year of the contract, according to his attorney Jeroen Bedaux.

Schothorst had previously been associated with F1 through a sponsorship deal with Dutch driver Giedo van der Garde, supported by McGregor Fashion Group, owned by Investrand.

INDIA: India defeated Wales 4-2 thanks to a brace from Akashdeep Singh in their Pool D matchup on Thursday in Bhubaneshwar.

Shamsher and Harmanpreet Singh also scored goals as India held off an attack from the Welsh team in the third quarter. India was under pressure after England beat Spain 4-0 earlier in the day to take the top spot in Pool D.

The hosts started the game strongly, and Mandeep attempted to open India’s account in the first minute, but the Wales goalkeeper was able to fend off the attack. The Indians put constant pressure on Wales but could not score a goal.

In the 17th minute, India scored their first PC, but the goalkeeper quickly cleared away Harmanpreet’s weak shot. India took the lead five minutes later thanks to Shamsher, who took advantage of a Wales loose clearance from an Indian penalty corner.

India got off to a good start in the third quarter when Akashdeep Singh doubled the lead in the 32nd minute. The India midfielder played a one-two with teammate Mandeep before netting the ball.

India continued to dominate the Welsh players, but their penalty corner conversion was horrendous. In the 42nd minute, Wales pulled one back from a penalty corner against the flow of play through Gareth Furlong.

A few minutes later, Draper helped them tie the game at 2-2 with the assistance of another penalty corner. Sreejesh saved the first shot, but Draper took advantage and put it past the Indian goalkeeper.

India started the fourth quarter on the right foot with Akashdeep’s brilliant run into the box and goal in the 46th minute to make it 3-2.

The hosts thought they had secured their fourth goal when Abhishek’s shot found the back of the net. However, it was deemed dangerous play because it had struck a Welsh defender.

As the game entered its final five minutes, Wales attempted to score an equalizer, but the Indian defence kept the score at 3-2.

India received a penalty corner after a green card reduced Wales to ten men and had to pull their goalkeeper out of the post. This time, India scored the elusive fourth goal thanks to Harmanpreet in the 59th minute.

India will proceed to the crossover stage to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

INDIA: Malaysia prevailed 3-2 over New Zealand in their FIH Odisha Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 Pool C match at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.

New Zealand overcame a two-goal deficit to level 2-2 with Malaysia in the final quarter. However, Malaysia scored in the 57th minute to win the closely-fought game.

Malaysia vs New Zealand

The Kiwis had a strong start, but the opponents’ aggressive hockey eventually subdued them until the third quarter. In the game’s final quarter, they showed some intent, but it was too late to affect the game.

Both teams gave each other a good fight during the first quarter, which was a tense affair. In the second and seventh minutes, Malaysia and New Zealand each received two penalty corners due to the aggression.

In the eighth minute, Saari Faizal scored for Malaysia, proving they were more opportunistic. Malaysia prevailed 1-0 after the first quarter.

The Asian team maintained their momentum and won a penalty corner in the 20th minute, but they could not take advantage of it. They had another opportunity for a penalty corner three minutes later, but Kiwi’s goalkeeper Dominic Dixon’s acrobatic effort prevented them from making it 2-0.

In the 36th minute, Malaysia won their fourth penalty corner to maintain their advantage over the Black Sticks, but the opposition’s solid defenders prevented them from scoring more.

In the 42nd minute, they demonstrated their dominance by winning their fifth and sixth consecutive penalty corners. Rahim Razie successfully converted the final one to give them a 2-0 lead through the third quarter.

The Kiwis made a last-ditch effort to get back into the game in the fourth and final quarter as the opposition became too comfortable with their lead. 

Phillips Hayden narrowed the gap in the process in the 51st minute. In the following minute, they received another penalty corner, which Lane Sam converted into a goal for the equalizer.

Malaysia came back strong, and in the 56th minute, Saari Faizal scored a tricky goal to turn the score 3-2 in their favour. In the 57th minute of the match, the opposition’s first rusher foiled the Kiwis’ attempt to earn a penalty corner.
