FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup: Australia Holds Argentina to a Thrilling 3-3 Draw

INDIA: Australia and Argentina played out a nail-biting 3-3 draw in their Group A match at Bhubaneswar.

Australia vs Argentina game ends in a gripping draw

Australia began the proceedings and put Argentina on the back foot right away. Hayward Jeremy made the most of the chance after Australia won a penalty corner and slotted the ball into the Argentine goalpost to give his side the early advantage.

Argentina equalized quickly in the second quarter. Domene Tomas converted the penalty corner for the South American team by smashing the ball past the Aussie goalkeeper.

Australia took the lead with just six seconds left in the second quarter. Beale Daniel scored the goal, and Australia ended the first half 2-1 after a lengthy review.

Argentina began the third quarter with reinfused vigour and made early inroads into the Australian circle, but the defenders for the team from down under thwarted their attacks.

The persistence from Argentina paid off when Casella steered the ball into the Australian goalpost after receiving a pass right in front of it. 

Soon, the Australians thought they had regained the lead with a stunning goal, but the referee disallowed it after the officials deemed the ball too high.

Australia passed the ball frequently while trying to retake the lead and won a penalty corner. However, the opportunity went begging.

Martin Ferreiro pierced through the Australian defence and hit the ball with the reverse stick into the bottom corner of the Australian goalpost. The goal helped his side take the lead and sent the Argentinian camp into a tizzy.

Aran Zalewsky had a goal-scoring opportunity in the game’s final quarter after being given space inside the Australian box. However, he dragged his shot wide of the post and missed the chance.

Australia pulled its goalkeeper out for an outfielder in an attempt to score an equalizer. The move paid dividends when Gower won the free hit before slicing the ball into the roof of the net and equalizing the score for Australia with less than four minutes left in the game.

The brilliant solo goal from Gower in the final minutes helped Australia draw the game 3-3 and finished the thrilling encounter on a high.

The recently released Lenovo Yoga 9i features Integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics, an Intel Core i7-1360P processor with core speeds of up to 5.0GHz.

The Lenovo Yoga 9i has 16GB of Soldered LPDDR5-5200 RAM and 1TB of M.2 2280 PCIe 4.04 NVMe internal storage in the memory and storage departments, respectively.

According to Lenovo, the Yoga 9i uses the Performance Hybrid architecture to deliver impressive performance and is designed to maximize versatility. Lenovo has integrated the Intel Evo platform into the laptop.

Intel Evo platforms are known for handling creative multitasking without compromising the battery life, responsiveness, or the system’s connectivity.

The Lenovo Yoga 9i is a thin and lightweight convertible laptop that only weighs 1.4 kilograms. It has a touchscreen OLED PureSight display with a 14-inch resolution, Dolby Vision, and a maximum brightness of 400 nits. 

The Yoga 9i also supports 10-point multi-touch with the Lenovo Precision Pen 2. The laptop’s audio capabilities are ramped up by Bowers & Wilkins speakers and have Dolby Atmos on a soundbar that rotates 360 degrees.

FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup: France Beats South Africa 2-1

INDIA: France defeated South Africa 2-1 in a closely contested match in the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup.

Both teams began aggressively and scored a goal each in the first quarter of the game. France controlled possession and successfully converted a penalty corner to take the lead early in the match.

Victor Charlet received the ball from Jouin Noe and dragged the ball into the goalpost, beating the flailing arms of the South African goalkeeper.

Toward the end of the first quarter, South Africa appealed for a referral, which earned them a penalty corner.

Connor Beauchamp made it count and smacked the ball into the post with a fiery pace to equalise the score.

Both teams ramped up their midfield defence as the second quarter saw France and South Africa struggle to get the upper hand over each other.

South Africa launched a strong counterattack in the third quarter, but the pass into the French box was too long and they missed a goal-scoring opportunity.

Tonder Jacque did well to intercept a dangerous French charge into the South African circle. 

France won a penalty corner in the final minutes of the third quarter, and Charlet timed his drag toward goal with perfection, but Gowan, the South African goalkeeper, palmed the ball away.

France took the lead in the final quarter when Charlet smacked the ball into the bottom left corner. 

Even though South Africa showed intent to make a match of it, they slipped up occasionally and forced Gowan to fend off French attacks.

South Africa withdrew its goalkeeper in an attempt to push more players forward into the French half, but they were unable to score the equalising goal and went down fighting till the final whistle.

Rishabh Pant Likely to Miss 2023 Season Due to Accident Injuries 

INDIA: India’s star wicketkeeper-batsman, Rishabh Pant, is likely to miss at least 18 months, which will be a significant setback for the nation with the ICC World Cup coming later this year.

According to reports from the media, Pant’s injuries from the car accident in December 2022 necessitate a lengthy recovery period, which may keep the Indian wicketkeeper-batsman off the field for some time.

He will almost certainly miss the IPL, the 50-over World Cup, half of the World Test Championship cycle in 2024, the T20 World Cup in June of next year, and the entire World Test Championship cycle, possibly including a WTC Final.

The 25-year-old will remain at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital until the treatment is finished. Pant had been admitted to the Max Hospital in Dehradun before being flown to Mumbai for additional treatment.

According to sources, he will continue receiving treatment in Mumbai before proceeding to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for extensive rehabilitation.

Pant has already undergone two surgeries to repair significant damage to the ligaments in his knee. As a wicketkeeper, he puts a lot of stress on his knees, so it might take him some time to get back to full sporting fitness.

A source speaking to the media said that since Pant is a wicketkeeper, his regular squatting and sideways movements put a lot of stress on his knees. “We can’t rush with it, and it is going to take a lot of time,” he added.

Pant will likely miss several important games, including the September 2023 Asia Cup and two World Cups, the 50-over World Cup later this year, and the 20-over World Cup in June next year.

The left-handed batsman will likely miss approximately half of the World Test Championship games.

Pant is a crucial member of the Indian team due to his explosive batting style. He has played several innings that have won matches and saved India from defeat.

The Delhi Capitals of the Indian Premier League will also be without their captain, who has had some impressive performances in the past.

FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup: India and England Play Out Goalless Draw

INDIA: India and England played to a goalless draw in their second match in Pool D of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup on Sunday. 

Very little distinguished the two teams after World No. 5 India and England, ranked sixth, failed to break the tie after 60 minutes of intense competition.

England secured its top spot in Pool D with the draw, as they had a higher goal difference than India. 

India and England started their campaigns with victories. India defeated Spain 2-0 in their tournament opener, while England beat Wales 5-0.

The Indians began aggressively and kept up the tempo till the final whistle. Akashdeep Singh made early inroads into the English circle, but the defenders kept him at bay. Mandeep Singh then tried unsuccessfully to weave his way into the circle from the wings.

Manpreet threaded a fiery pinpoint pass to Abhishek at the circle’s edge, but the English defence came up big again.

Jack Wallace tried to sneak the ball through the tightest of angles in the second quarter, but Pathak Krishan Bahadur closed the gap between his legs in the nick of time. 

There was a scary moment in the third quarter when Rushmere was accidentally hit on his face. He bled profusely through the deep laceration on his left cheek. A few moments later, Mandeep celebrated a goal that the referee disallowed.

The ball flew past the English goalkeeper and into the goal, but India didn’t have a referral left then, and the on-field decision stayed.

India was dealt a blow in the form of an injured Hardik. He fell to the ground in visible pain, and the referees brought in the physios. Hardik hobbled off the pitch, assisted by the physios.

With 19 seconds left on the clock, England won a penalty corner. However, Bandurak only managed to hit the post, floundering a solid goal opportunity. 

In their final group match on January 19 in Bhubaneswar, India will play Wales, the pool’s lowest-ranked team, while England will play Spain.

INDIA: The Netherlands played aggressively to hand Malaysia a 4-0 thrashing in the second Group C match at Rourkela.

Netherlands kick started the game with a dominating stance

The Dutch took the attack to Malaysia quickly after the game began but soon lost the ball possession to its rivals. They soon regained it thanks to some attacking play.

The Netherlands had a chance to score, but Janssen couldn’t get the ball past the Malaysian goalkeeper. 

The Speedy Tigers brought out some spectacular display of defence to save the penalty corner awarded to the Netherlands after the ball touched the feet of a Malaysian defender. The two teams exchanged possession throughout the goalless first quarter.

The Dutch scored twice in the second quarter in the form of Van Dam, who scored in the 20th minute, and Jip Janssen from a successful penalty stroke. After an illegal tackle on Jonas de Geus, the referee awarded the penalty stroke for the Netherlands.

Malaysia received a scoring opportunity through a penalty corner, but Faizal Saari flicked the ball wide on a rebound after the Netherlands goalkeeper saved the first attempt. The Dutch were reduced to 10 members for two minutes after the referee showed Jorrit Croon the green card.

The Netherlands dominated the first two-quarters of the game with 70% ball possession and fifteen Malaysian circle penetrations, compared to their rival’s three.

Malaysia missed multiple scoring chances in the third quarter, which ended goalless after the Dutch captain limped off the field on one leg. 

The loss of their captain didn’t deter the Dutch, who scored their third goal off a penalty corner soon after the fourth quarter began. Teun Beins converted the penalty corner and scored his first senior international goal.

Jorrit Croon scored in the final minute with his back facing the goal to hit his team’s fourth goal of the match.

INDIA: New Zealand began its Hockey World Cup in dominant style by beating Chile 3-1 at Rourkela. Today’s Group C fixture marked Chile’s men’s Hockey World Cup debut.

New Zealand’s dominant style in the game handed them victory

The Black Sticks started aggressively and put pressure on the debutants right away. However, Chile managed to fend off the initial attacks from New Zealand thanks to some brilliant work from the goalkeeper.

Same Lane scored the first goal for New Zealand in the first quarter by sweeping the ball past Adrian Henriquez while entering the Chile circle.

Moments later. Sam Hiha made it 2-0 when he scored off Tarrant’s pass. Tarrant soon received a green card, which left New Zealand a man down for two minutes. Chile won a penalty corner from the green card, but Dixon saved the shot.

New Zealand got a penalty corner after Chilean defenders tackled Sam Child roughly in the Chile circle. Chile had the opportunity to counter-attack after it defended the penalty, but the first quarter ended.

In this 19th minute, Sam Hiha scored his second goal to put his side up 3-0. Simon Child stole the ball from Chile and passed it on to Hiha, who promptly scored the goal.

In the third quarter, Chile successfully asked for a penalty corner via the video referral, but their opportunity to convert it went begging after it went wide of the post.

Chile scored their first-ever World Cup goal in the fourth quarter of the match. Ignacio Contardo slipped the ball past the Kiwi goalkeeper, Leon Hayward, who had come forward to deflect off the ball.

Chile was awarded the goal after much deliberation due to the possibility of it having come off the back stick.

Chile won a penalty corner in the dying stages of the match, but Hayward managed to stop the La Rojas before Nic Woods put the ball away.

INDIA: India defeated Spain 2-0 on Friday to begin their World Cup 2023 campaign at the newly constructed Birsa Munda stadium in Rourkela.

India is in Pool D with Spain, England, and Wales. The tournament’s format is that the first-place team advances directly to the quarterfinals, while the second-and third-place teams compete in a crossover round against the third- and second-place teams from Pool C. 

Hardik Singh’s stellar game catapulted India to victory

The men in blue started the tournament with vigour and energy. Amit Rohidas‘ goal in the first quarter appeared to be merely a reward for their efforts. 

The team then alternated between counter-pressing high and sitting back and countering the Spanish attacks, leading to Hardik Singh’s second goal. Hardik’s hard running, in particular, seemed too much for Spain to handle.

The blue team, reduced to ten players, was forced to play back-to-the-wall defence for ten minutes in the final quarter due to Abhishek’s unfortunate yellow card, but they did a pretty good job. India and Spain need to improve in certain areas of the game if they want to advance further in the tournament.

India had five shots to Spain’s five, 27 circle penetrations to Spain’s 25, with the majority of Spain’s coming in that final quarter, and six penalty corners to Spain’s three. However, Harmanpreet Singh’s conversion rate will be a problem, mostly because he missed a penalty stroke.

The entire midfield, including Manpreet Singh, Shamsher Singh, Nilakanta Sharma, and Vivek Sagar Prasad, played well, but there was one player whose performance stood out.

The performance of Hardik Singh was an art of flawless midfield play. Using his speed and dribbling skills to the hilt, he penetrated the circle, moved up when necessary, tracked back when necessary, and pressed when the team wanted to win the ball high up the field.

Ravi Kumar Replaces Brian Humphries as the New Cognizant CEO

INDIA: One of India’s most well-known IT companies, Cognizant, has appointed a new CEO. Cognizant on January 12 announced the appointment of former Infosys president Ravi Kumar as its new chief executive officer effective immediately. Kumar has worked in the country’s information technology industry for over two decades.

Kumar is an educated leader who has also held positions on the boards of Digimarc Corp. and TransUnion. He went to Shivaji University to get his engineering degree and completed his MBA from the Xavier Institute of Management.

As per the reports, Kumar will receive a substantial salary package. He will earn more than four times as much as Mukesh Ambani did in 2020.

Kumar’s appointment as the new CEO of Cognizant comes as a fresh breath of air for the information technology services and consulting company, which has underperformed under the leadership of outgoing CEO Brian Humphries.

Humphries’ tenure under Cognizant’s leadership was tumultuous, with a former employee likening his entry into the firm to “a bull in a China shop.” He laid off several senior leaders and fired countless others.

Ravi Kumar, former president of Infosys, is considered one of the most accomplished leaders in the technology industry. Throughout his tenure at the company, he played a vital role in driving growth and innovation, and his achievements have had a significant impact on the success of Infosys.

Kumar joined Infosys in 2000 as a senior vice president and quickly rose through the ranks to become president in 2015, holding the position until 2022. 

During his tenure at the helm of Infosys, his responsibilities included overseeing the company’s operations in North America, Europe, and Asia. He played a critical role in driving growth and innovation across the organization.

One of Kumar’s main achievements as the head of Infosys was expanding the company’s presence in the North American market.

Blazing Phillips Hands New Zealand Thrilling Series Win against Pakistan

PAKISTAN: New Zealand’s bowlers showed guile to reign in the Pakistani batters, who seemed to score more than 300 runs at one stage. Fakhar Zaman’s century and Mohammad Rizwan’s half-century, along with a cameo from Agha Salman, helped Pakistan post a total of 280/9.

New Zealand started the chase in earnest but lost a flurry of wickets in the middle overs. Glenn Phillips stemmed the rot and guided his team home with 11 deliveries to spare and just three wickets in hand.

Lockie Ferguson and Michael Bracewell shook Pakistan early in their innings, but Fakhar Zaman and Mohammad Rizwan quickly got things back on track.

In a Mitchell Santner over, Zaman hit two boundaries, while Rizwan hit the third ball he faced for a boundary.

After the powerplay, the two batters settled for singles before Zaman hit two boundaries off Tim Southee. He reached his fifty and looked excellent as the partnership reached 100 for the third wicket.

The visitors began to struggle when the boundaries started flowing again. Ish Sodhi broke the partnership with a googly to stop a well-set Rizwan after Pakistan was on 175.

Zaman notched up his 8th ODI century, but threw away his wicket in the next over. Pakistan was 206/4 after 40 overs and looked well set to score beyond 300.

However, the Kiwi bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals to set the Pakistani run rate back. Agha Salman used the long handle to great effect and scored 45 crucial runs, which helped Pakistan reach 280/9 at the end of 50 overs.

New Zealand inning 

New Zealand took control of the run chase after Finn Allen was run out for a run-a-ball 25.

While Kane Williamson was having trouble at first, Devon Conway hit a four off Mohammad Wasim Jr. and a six off Mohammad Nawaz.

As the visitors gradually gained momentum in the chase, Williamson eventually settled in thanks to Pakistan’s erratic bowling.

In the 21st over, Agha Salman got rid of Conway, but New Zealand stayed in charge as Daryl Mitchell and Kane Williamson added 52 runs together.

Mitchell smashed Haris Rauf for a six as New Zealand reached 155/2 after 30. Pakistan fought back by claiming three wickets in five overs.

Mitchell fell for 31 after a mistimed reverse sweep, while Williamson was run out after reaching his half-century. Williamson, like Conway, lost his wicket while trying to get a single that wasn’t there.

Pakistan seemed to regain control of the match once again as Michael Bracewell inside-edged one onto his stumps.

The hosts were all over New Zealand when Wasim Jr. castled Tom Latham, and the Kiwis still required 76 off 71 with four wickets in hand.

Glenn Phillips then took over, trying to put pressure on the home team with rapid boundaries. Phillips raced to 23 off 12 after smashing a six off Agha Salman and clubbing one wide over long on off Nawaz.

Phillips then smothered another six over midwicket on Haris Rauf’s return to bowling. The onslaught surprised Pakistan as Phillips hit his fourth six in the next over.

Phillips reached his half-century in 28 deliveries. His onslaught helped New Zealand win the series decider with 11 balls to spare.

Glenn Phillips won the Player of the Match award for his swashbuckling innings, while Devon Convoy received the Player of the Series award. This was New Zealand’s first series win against Pakistan in Pakistan.
