INDIA: In protest over the death of a first-year student at Jadavpur University (JU) who was allegedly raped and sexually abused, BJP MLAs left the West Bengal assembly. They argued that the university campus is now a “hub of anti-national elements” and that only an NIA investigation can reveal the truth.

The BJP legislative party requested a response from Education Minister Bratya Basu after introducing an adjournment motion on the incident.

Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari asked about the state government’s control of Jadavpur University and the link between anti-national elements and drugs.

Basu responded that the situation was the governor CV Ananda Bose’s fault, prompting BJP MLAs to yell anti-TMC slogans at the Bengal government.

According to Basu, the governor is completely to blame for the issue. He went on to say that ragging isn’t just a problem at JU. Such events had occurred in central institutes such as IIT Kharagpur, he claimed.

A first-year undergraduate student’s death after allegedly being raped and subjected to sexual harassment has sparked a backlash against Jadavpur University.

Adhikari has called for an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the incident.

According to Adhikari, the Jadavpur University campus has become the hub of anti-national elements, and the state administration is just a mute spectator. He went on to say that only an NIA investigation can uncover the truth because the state government is attempting to keep the situation quiet.

On August 9, the 17-year-old college student passed away after falling from the main boys’ hostel’s second-floor balcony. His family said that he suffered from sexual harassment and ragging.

A total of 13 people, both current and former JU students, were detained in relation to the student’s death.
