INDIA: Telangana BJP MLA T Raja Singh was booked under custody after his disparaging comments against Prophet Muhammad. A group of dissenters gathered in front of city Police Commissioner CV Anand’s office, demanding action against him. The Deputy Commissioner of Hyderabad Police, P Sai Chaitanya, said that a case is filed against Raja Singh under sections 295(a), 153(a), the law relating to intentionally insulting religious beliefs.
The convicted MLA had allegedly released “comedy” content against comedian Munawar Faruqui who held a show in Hyderabad last week. He even made remarks against the comedian and his mother. Besides all of that, he released a 10 min offensive video against Prophet Muhammad.
The MLA had accused Faruqui of insulting Hindu deities, thus threatening to disrupt the event. So, this made him furious and rebellious. According to the Dabeepura police station, over 250 people came in power to protest in front of the police station, asserting Raja Singh of hurting their religious sentiments.
The DCP of South Zone P Sai Chaitanya said, “We request everyone to maintain law and order in the city. We assure you that stern action will be taken against Raja Singh. We have received multiple complaints against him from various police stations under the Hyderabad Commissionerate.”
This entire case falls months after BJP suspended spokesperson Nupur Sharma for making analogous statements against a specific community on national television over a debate. At Least ten lawsuits were filed against her across the country over her controversial statement. The statement triggered instant flak among people; it feels that the same occurred in the case of Singh.
