Boat Capsizes in Lagos

16 persons were rescued by the Marine Police after the boat capsized.

NIGERIA. Lagos State: One person has been confirmed dead as a boat capsized after departing the Ferry Terminal in the Ikorodu area of Lagos state.

This was confirmed in a statement by the Lagos state Area Manager, National Inland Waterways Authority, Engineer Sarat Braimah.

According to her, the boat was involved in the accident 15 minutes after its departure from the CMS terminal in Lagos adding that the boat hit an underwater stumbling block and capsized close to Adekunle Waterfront.

“A boat conveying 17 persons named “TEMI 3 Global” which was coming from CMS Ferry Terminal along Ikorodu Ferry Terminal was involved in an accident.

“We quickly informed the men of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in rescue of the victims”, Braimah reported.

Rescue

Responding to the distress call, the Marine Police, fishermen and other boat operators joined in saving the life of 16 persons alive while one person died while taken to the hospital.

“We immediately mobilised to the site of the incident the National Inland Waterways Authority Search and Rescue Team, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Marine Police, fishermen and other boat operators leading to the rescue of 16 persons while one person died on the way to the hospital”, Braimah stated.

Braimah then condoled the family of the person who lose his life and prayed for the soul of the dead to rest in its final abode.

The South West Public Relations Officer of NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye also confirmed the occurrence in an interview with the newsmen shortly after the incident.

Farinloye added that the passengers were rescued with the support of local divers immediately after the incident happened.

It was gathered that local divers trained by the Lagos State Government help in rescuing the victims.
