INDIA. New Delhi: Schools finally reopened for students of Class 10 and 12 today after a gap of some ten months in view of the upcoming board examinations with all COVID safety protocols put in place.  The atmosphere was full of happiness as the authorities and teachers gave a rousing welcome to students.

Deputy chief minister and education minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia took to Twitter on the morning of the reopening day and said he is glad that the schools are opening in Delhi today. “Best wishes to the students of class 10 & 12th who are going to visit their school today after 10 months… (Though it’s only for limited purpose and with COVID protocols..) But still… I am glad that schools are opening in Delhi today, “Sisodia said in a tweet on Monday.

The Delhi government had earlier allowed all schools outside containment zones to resume functioning and directed authorities to ensure social distancing norms. The move to reopen schools in Delhi is a result of a lower positivity rate in the national capital, which is below 1 percent. The government has also ordered the schools not to make physical attendance mandatory for students and said that students can only attend schools with prior permission from parents. The Directorate of Education (DoE) has also instructed schools to follow all COVID-19 guidelines.

Students and teachers said that they are happy to be back to their normal life. Students of a Delhi school said, “We can now clear our doubts with teachers and learn about the new pattern. We will ensure that all safety protocols like social distancing, keep our masks on & carry sanitisers are followed.”

Officials and teachers at schools were also actively ensuring that all precautionary steps to ensure that the students stay safe from the infection are adhered to. Parents have been instructed to use private vehicles to drop students to school.  Schools are also working out plans to ensure students, who choose not to come to campus, do not miss out on anything.

Installation of fogging machines, thermal scanners, placing hand washing consoles and sanitiser dispensers in corridors, deploying volunteers to ensure social distancing and conduct temperature checks, keeping medical facilities on standby for any eventuality and spraying of disinfectants in-between batches, and reduction of class hours from six hours to two hours are some of the various initiatives planned by the city’s schools.

The schools are allowing students in slots – half of the students of a class in the classroom and the rest in the laboratory to conduct practical lessons at a time with at least three staff members to ensure supervision. Other measures include orientation programs and putting up posters and notices detailing the COVID-19 guidelines.
