UNITED STATES: In a recently released short film titled Reflect, Disney made its first plus-size heroine debut. Since the beginning of Disney, plus-sized characters have only ever appeared as villains or extras, and many people have previously criticised this choice.

Hillary Bradfield’s directorial most recent film, Reflect, which stars a plus-sized female as the film’s main character, has recently received accolades on social media from fans.

Reflect arrived on Disney+

Reflect is a film in the studios experimental Short Circuit series that explores body concerns. The story revolves around Bianca, a young ballet dancer who fights her own reflection, overcoming uncertainty and fear by focusing on her “inner strength, grace, and power.”

In the trailer, Bianca is seen struggling with her confidence in class. Her teacher reprimands her, saying, “Tight tummy! Long neck!” Then, her reflection in the mirror breaks, representing how she sees herself while living with body dysmorphia.

The short movie, which debuted on Disney+ last month, is directed by the animation artist Hillary Bradfield (who has worked on films like Encanto and Frozen 2). Since its debut, it has sparked a lot of online discussions, with many fans delighted to see such representation on screen.

One person tweeted, “16-year-old me needed this Disney short before I quit ballet because I didn’t want to be the fat girl in class anymore. I’m glad little ones will have this. 10/10 for Reflect! “

Additionally, the character is receiving a lot of love on TikTok, where many users are emphasising how crucial the story is.

Some also shared their own stories to demonstrate how deeply the new movie “resonates” with viewers. One person wrote, “She looks exactly like me when I was her age! I was in the same situation in dance classes.”

An emotional response to the Reflect teaser is unquestionable. In fact, one TikTok user even commented, “Have a feeling I might sob at this.”

Disney+ is currently streaming Reflect for viewers.
