INDIA. Haryana: In a shocking statement, a female athlete coach registered a complaint in Chandigarh against the Haryana Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sandeep Singh of sexual harassment.
Meanwhile, Singh gave up his sports portfolio on moral grounds. However, he continued to remain as a Minister of State (MoS) and continued to hold the other portfolio under his independent charge: Printing and Stationery. The Chandigarh police have also set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the entire matter.
According to a spokesperson of Chandigarh police, “In the matter of a complaint made by a woman coach of Haryana against the Haryana Sports Minister, an FIR under sections 354, 354A, 354B, 342, 506 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 26 police station, Chandigarh. An SIT is investigating it.”
A senior official also revealed that the case included the help of “cyber forensic investigation” because the victim claimed that she had earlier communicated with the minister via Snapchat, WhatsApp, etc., and later deleted the conversations. Thus, both phones would be scrutinized.
In a statement to the media, Singh said, “An atmosphere has been created to spoil my image. A junior coach has levelled false allegations. I want a proper investigation, which is also underway. Based on humanity and moral grounds, I hand over my sports department to the Chief Minister, who may take the next decision after the inquiry report.”
However, the junior coach of Haryana was not satisfied with the resignation of the BJP minister and said, “I am your daughter. I am the daughter of the state. I have worked very hard. I come from a simple family. I have done a lot for my state. I appeal to the chief minister to sack this janwar (animal). There should be strict action against him. There should be a fair investigation.”
The young woman also appealed to the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said, “I have great expectations from Narendra Modiji. Do not let me down. Get him to resign and put him in jail.”
The woman further raised her concern about the probe because Singh has only given up the sports portfolio but is still serving as a minister.
The victim said, “I do not want the probe to be conducted under any pressure. It does not stop here, he should resign as a minister, and a fair probe should be done. I am also under a lot of pressure, and I request the government to ask him to resign so that he cannot misuse his power.”
