INDIA.Mumbai: Mohan Sanjivbhai Delkar, a seven-term Lok Sabha member from the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, allegedly died by suicide in “Sea Green South Hotel” located at Marine Drive in South Mumbai on Monday.

He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. The body of Delkar (58), Independent MP, was found at the sea-facing hotel in south Mumbai. “Dead body of Mohan Sanjibhai Delkar, Hon’ble MP, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, has been found in a hotel under the limits of Marine Drive police station. The police are at the spot. A suicide note has been found. An investigation is being done. The exact cause of death will be known after the post-mortem is conducted. An accidental death report is being registered based on preliminary information, the Mumbai Police PRO said.

A suicide note of five to six pages written in Gujarati has been recovered. In the note, the names of about 40 people are written and the police are currently cross verifying all these names. According to the police, Delkar has committed suicide but every aspect of this incident is being investigated. A team of forensics has also been called on this occasion.

In May 2019 Delkar was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha, his seventh term in the House. He was also a member of the Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice and a member of the Consultative Committee, Ministry of Home Affairs of the Lower House.

An advocate for tribal rights, he began his career as a trade union leader in Silvassa. He was first elected to the 9th Lok Sabha from Dadra and Nagar Haveli constituency in 1989 as a Congress nominee. In 1990-1991 he became a member of the Subordinate Legislation Committee and was a member of the Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Tribes.

He won six consecutive elections from the constituency during 1989-2009, failing to retain the seat in the Lok Sabha elections in 2009 and 2014. However, he successfully contested the 17 th Lok Sabha as an Independent candidate. He won 1989, 1991, and 1996 elections as a Congress candidate and the 1998 election as a BJP candidate. He rejoined the Congress and unsuccessfully contested in 2009 and 2014.

He was the President of the Indian Institute of Youth Affairs, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, President of the Kamgar Union since 1985, and also the President of the Vidyarthi Parishad, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. He was the General Secretary of the Youth Congress, Dadra and Nagar Haveli in 1986-89 and also the President of the Indian National Congress, Dadra, and Nagar Haveli.
