INDIA: A 19-year-old man Mohammad Javed, a resident of Sindhi Sarkar Ki Haweli, Kheradiwala, was arrested on Thursday by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with the gruesome killing of Kanhaiya Lal (48) in Udaipur in Rajasthan last month.

Mohammad Javed became the eighth arrested accused related to gruesome murder that sent shockwaves across the country. A week before Kanhaiya Lal’s murder, the chemist Umesh Kolhe (54) from Amravati in Maharashtra was murdered on June 21, allegedly for his social media posts backing former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s remarks on the Prophet.

“Mohammad Javed had played an “important role” in the conspiracy to kill Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Udaipur, by conducting reconnaissance and passing on the information about the victim’s presence at the shop to the main killer, Riyaz, before the attack,” a spokesperson of the NIA said.

Kanhaiya Lal was killed with a cleaver inside his tailoring shop in Udaipur’s Maldas Street, Bhoot Mahal area, on June 28, by two assailants armed with sharp-edged weapons. The gruesome attack by Riaz was recorded on a mobile phone by Ghouse Mohammad, and the video was posted online. In another video, the duo said they hacked Lal to death to avenge an alleged insult to Islam. Both were arrested within hours of the killing.
