Tourists in Toledo sought relief from the heat by using misting fans at bars.

Heatwaves in Spain and Europe have worsened the ongoing drought, causing reservoir levels to drop and forcing Catalan officials to implement restrictions. The melting ice in Spain’s mountains is causing the country to suffocate in the heat.

The greatest glacier in the Pyrenees, the Aneto Glacier, is melting and may eventually vanish, according to peer-reviewed research published on Tuesday in the scientific journal The Cryosphere, which focuses on frozen water and ground.

The study demonstrates that between 1981 and 2022, the glacier lost almost two-thirds of its original surface area, shrinking to just half a square km. In the same time frame, the glacier’s average ice thickness decreased by around 30 metres.

The melting increased in 2021 and 2022 due to exceptionally warm years in Spain.
