SPAIN: Two weeks before Spain’s election, the conservative People’s Party (PP) has increased its advantage over the ruling Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), although it would still require the support of the far-right Vox party to form a government, as per an opinion poll published in a newspaper on Sunday.

Between July 3 and July 6, Ipsos polled 2,000 people for the La Vanguardia newspaper, and the results showed that the PSOE received 28% of the votes and the opposition PP received 35%.

Prior to the election on July 23, a poll predicted that the extreme-left Sumar party would take 13% of the vote, just beating out Vox with 12.6%.

According to election predictions, the PSOE would win between 102 and 112 seats in the 350-member lower house, while the PP would take between 138 and 147 seats

Vox, the PP’s most likely coalition partner, would take home between 32 and 39 seats. Sumar was expected to win between 31 and 39 seats.

If the poll’s findings are accurate, a right-wing alliance between the PP and Vox may win up to 180 seats, which would be sufficient for an absolute majority.

Alternatively, the PP and Vox combined could win up to 170 seats, which would give them more than a left-wing combination of the PSOE and Sumar, which the poll estimated would win little more than 150 seats.

After a dismal performance in regional elections in May, Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called the national election.

All polls have so far forecast that the PP would gain the most votes in the elections.
