INDIA. Mumbai: The Victory flame of “Swarnim Vijay Varsh”, commemorating the 50th-anniversary celebrations of India’s victory in the 1971 war, traversed through the Andaman & Nicobar Islands chain on Wednesday. 

Onboard Indian Navy Landing Craft Utility (IN LCU) 58, accompanied by INS Saryu and IN LCU 54, the flame was routed via Narcondam, the easternmost island of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The flame also sailed past Barren Island, India’s only active volcano. The volcano spewed gas/lava as the flame sailed past the Flat Rock, an islet during low waters.

The victory flame will reach Hut Bay where it will be kept for public viewing and other events under the aegis of the Indian Coast Guard. On completion of a day’s public viewing at Hut Bay, the flame will return to Port Blair for the Independence Day parade at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium. After the Independence Day celebrations, the flame will begin its next phase of transit to the Southern Group of islands on the evening of August 15.

In another development, the Southern Army Commander Lieutenant General JS Nain, AVSM, SM, who is on two days’ visit to Army Establishments, visited some areas in Vidarbha region on Wednesday.

During the visit to Nagpur, Kamptee, and Pulgaon, he was briefed by General Officer Commanding, North Maharashtra and Gujarat Sub Area, about the active role being played by Sub Area in Operations, Humanitarian Aid in Disaster Relief and Welfare of Ex-Servicemen during the COVID pandemic times. 

The Army Commander was later shown the infrastructure development, ecological works, and other initiatives taken, since the relocation of Sub Area from Mumbai to Nagpur in March 2018. The Army Commander appreciated the efforts of Sub-Area in developmental work and support to civil administration during the peak crisis of COVID-19 . He also appreciated a disaster relief provided during flood and fire incidents. The Army Commander also visited the Air Maintenance Command at Vayu Sena Nagar, Nagpur, and interacted with AOC-in-C, Air Marshal Sashiker Choudhary, AVSM, VSM.

Anita Jain, Regional President Army Wives Welfare Association(AWWA), who accompanied the Army Commander, interacted with ladies of the Sub Area. She was briefed by Chairperson FWO about the AWWA activities and measures adopted to ensure the safety and welfare of families and Veer Naris (brave women) during the COVID-19 pandemic, including children’s education.
