Tinka Tinka Foundation Launches ‘Tinka Jail Paathshala’ for Inmates Across India

A new initiative aims to deliver recorded masterclasses in Hindi and English, focusing on life skills, mental well-being and practical knowledge beyond formal prison education

INDIA: The Tinka Tinka Foundation has announced the launch of Tinka Jail Paathshala, a nationwide educational initiative designed to provide prison inmates with access to recorded masterclasses across Indian jails.

The platform will deliver structured learning modules in both Hindi and English through prison-approved systems, addressing gaps in existing correctional education. The initiative seeks to introduce subjects not typically covered in formal prison curricula but essential for inmates’ personal growth and rehabilitation.

The programme was formally released by K. G. Suresh, Director of the India Habitat Centre. Speaking at the launch, he emphasized that prisons must function as reformative institutions where, alongside vocational training, inmates should receive education in values, ethics, personality development and time management. Tinka Jail Paathshala was also presented at a ceremony hosted by the Delhi Government to Rashmi Singh, Secretary, Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Delhi.

The initiative is led by Vartika Nanda, Head of the Department of Journalism at Lady Shri Ram College for Women and founder of the Tinka Tinka Foundation. She stated that the primary objective of the programme is to transform idle time in prisons into meaningful engagement through accessible and relevant learning content.

The first episode of Tinka Jail Paathshala will focus on time management within the prison environment. Future modules will include topics such as mental health, drug de-addiction, music, self-help, general awareness and skill development, with content evolving based on feedback from inmates.

The initiative builds on insights gathered during the foundation’s earlier prison communication programmes, including Tinka Jail Radio. These experiences highlighted a persistent gap in educational resources, with many inmates relying on limited printed material and lacking access to structured, contemporary learning tools.

As part of the rollout, District Jail Dehradun has been designated as the production hub. Initial episodes will be edited by former inmate Dr. Suchit Narang, who previously served as a radio jockey for the prison’s in-house radio initiative. The project has received approval from Uttarakhand prison authorities, including DIG Dhadhi Ram Maurya and Jailor Pawan Kothari.

Operating on a public service model, Tinka Jail Paathshala will collaborate with educators, practitioners and content creators to develop short, practical lessons tailored to prison schedules. The content will be distributed through prison officials, internal radio systems and the foundation’s digital platforms.

The launch marks an expansion of Tinka Tinka Foundation’s work in prison reform, which began with the introduction of prison radio at District Jail Agra in 2019. Since then, the organisation has developed a broader communication framework aimed at informing, educating and empowering inmates across the country.
