INDIA: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a much-needed respite from the current heatwave conditions plaguing the country. According to the latest forecast, April is set to end on a calmer note than anticipated, with another western disturbance expected to influence weather patterns from Sunday onward.

The IMD has also stated that the upcoming eastern disturbance will help keep the mercury below 40 degrees Celsius at least until April 28 in Delhi. The agency has observed that a trough of moderately low pressure crosses Telangana from northwest Madhya Pradesh to south Tamil Nadu, with cyclonic circulations over both states’ interiors. Private forecaster Skymet Weather has included a new trough from northeast Bihar to Odisha via Jharkhand.

Weather experts have suggested that a trough often leads to cloudy conditions and rain, which can help lower temperatures. IMD has confirmed that several Indian states will not experience heatwaves this week, with conditions already decreasing on Saturday in Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha.

The weather office has also predicted hailstorms for Vidarbha on Monday, Bihar over the next two days, and some areas of Odisha over the following three days. On Sunday and Monday, respectively, there will likely be a lot of rain in Odisha and parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. On Sunday, isolated locations in south Haryana, northeast Rajasthan, and west Uttar Pradesh are highly likely to have duststorms.

Skymet Weather has predicted scattered rainfall in the entire Northeast, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana, with thunderstorms and patchy rain potentially occurring over the western Himalayas, parts of Haryana, Punjab, Bihar, southeast Uttar Pradesh, southeast Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and south-interior Karnataka.

IMD has urged farmers to harvest matured rice, maize, groundnuts, and ragi in Andhra Pradesh and rice in Kerala and to store the harvested goods in safer locations in reaction to the weather. In the past 24 hours, Bihar has experienced sporadic rain and hailstorms that have pounded various sections of the state. Isolated spells of light rain have also brought a much-needed reprieve from the previous sweltering heat.
