JAPAN: India continued to make its mark at the Asian Games 2023 with a spectacular day of sporting achievements that left the nation proud. Shooting gold, wushu silver, and a bronze in equestrian events contributed significantly to India’s growing medal tally, which now stands at an impressive 25 medals.

Shooting glory

India’s shooting prowess was on full display as the men’s 10m air pistol team clinched a gold medal at the Asian Games. The trio of Sarabjot Singh, Arjun Singh Cheema, and Shiva Narwal showcased their exceptional marksmanship to narrowly edge out the formidable Chinese team. Adding to the excitement, two Indian marksmen also secured spots in the individual finals, setting the stage for further glory in the shooting events.

Wushu silver

In the wushu arena, India’s Naorem Roshibina Devi demonstrated her mettle by reaching the women’s 60kg wushu sanda final at the Asian Games. Although she faced a tough challenge from local heavyweight Wu Xiaowei, Roshibina Devi managed to secure a well-deserved silver medal, marking another impressive achievement for India in martial arts.

Boxing drama

The boxing ring witnessed a mix of emotions for India. While Nishant Dev and Jaismine Lamboria advanced to the quarterfinals, Deepak Bhoria, a World Championships bronze medalist, experienced heartbreak with a pre-quarterfinal defeat at the Asian Games. The boxing contingent continues to hold the nation’s hopes high as the competition progresses.

Football exit

The Indian football team, despite a spirited effort, saw their journey come to an end after a 0-2 defeat against Saudi Arabia in the pre-quarterfinal clash. Saudi Arabia showcased their dominance, with forward Mohammed Khalil Marran scoring two crucial goals in the 51st and 57th minutes, sealing India’s exit from the men’s football competition.

Hockey heroics

India’s hockey team remained a shining star in the competition by securing their third consecutive win in Pool A. They outperformed Japan with a final score of 4-2, further solidifying their position as strong contenders in the field.

Squash success

In squash, India’s men’s team blanked Nepal 3-0 in their final pool tie, earning them a spot in the semifinals. Despite a 0-3 loss to Malaysia in their final pool B match, the Indian women’s squash team secured a bronze medal, ensuring their presence on the podium.

Tennis triumph

India’s tennis contingent also made significant strides. Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale secured a place in the mixed doubles semifinals by defeating their opponents from Kazakhstan. 

In men’s doubles, the duo of Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni advanced to the final, leaving them just one win away from clinching the gold medal.
