NASA’s Psyche Mission Launch Delayed to Ensure Smooth Takeoff amidst Gulf Storm Threat

UNITED STATES: The much-anticipated launch of NASA’s Psyche asteroid mission has been rescheduled for 10:19 a.m. EDT (1419 GMT) on Friday, October 13, in response to adverse weather conditions approaching from the Gulf of Mexico.

Originally slated for Thursday morning, the launch was postponed after a prelaunch briefing on Wednesday revealed a mere 20% chance of favourable weather conditions for the following day. 

The decision was made as storm systems moved in on Wednesday night, prompting mission teams to seize the improved launch windows forecasted for Friday and Saturday, October 14.

Arlena Moses, launch weather officer with the U.S. Space Force, highlighted concerns regarding escalating liftoff winds during the briefing. “We expect winds to pick up very quickly out of the south and southwest.”

Moses stated, emphasizing gusts potentially reaching 20 to 25 miles per hour. These conditions were projected to persist throughout Thursday’s launch window, compelling the postponement to Friday.

Moses also discussed the weather prospects for the backup launch windows, explaining that both Friday and Saturday mornings present roughly equal chances of favourable conditions, at around 50%.

The decision to prioritize Friday’s window may also be attributed to the characteristics of SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy launch vehicle. The rocket has a limited number of launch recycle attempts, allowing for full fueling only twice before necessitating maintenance that could lead to significant launch delays.

Tim Dunn, NASA’s senior launch director, shed light on the constraints imposed by the Falcon Heavy’s design. “The limitations for recycled attempts are due to the vast quantity of densified LOX (liquid oxygen) that we use with the Falcon Heavy configuration,” he clarified.

With Friday offering a 50% chance of a successful launch and Saturday presenting a similar probability, NASA aims to maximize their chances of a smooth liftoff. The launch window remains open until October 25, providing ample opportunities to embark on the mission to explore the enigmatic metallic asteroid Psyche, nestled within the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. 

NASA’s Psyche mission promises to unravel the mysteries surrounding this unusual celestial body, believed to be the exposed core of a protoplanet.

“The 2024 season will mark a significant departure from our previous approach. We’re going back to basics,” affirmed Wolff in an interview. “We need to eliminate any avoidable errors in development. Lewis should not have to worry about cockpit positioning or enigmatic suspension kinematics.”

UNITED KINGDOM: Aston Martin has revealed the evolution version of the Vantage GT3, captured for the first time during comprehensive trials at the Silverstone circuit this week. Just days after Aston’s proclamation of crafting new renditions of its GT3 and GT4 Vantages, in tandem with the Valkyrie Le Mans Hypercar’s anticipated debut in 2025, the British automaker affirms its dedication to customer racing in the GT divisions through its long-standing partnership with Prodrive, a collaboration that has spanned nearly two decades.

Adam Carter, the newly appointed head of endurance motorsport at Aston Martin, has confirmed that the forthcoming cars will represent homologation upgrades of the existing GT3 and GT4 models, which first graced the tracks in 2019.

Details surrounding the Prodrive-developed cars, including nomenclature, remain veiled in secrecy. Sources suggest that the revamped GT3 contender is in its conclusive stages of development, poised for homologation, while its GT4 counterpart is already operational and undergoing trials.

Aston Martin remained tight-lipped regarding the specifics of the two-day trials held at Silverstone earlier this week. However, it has come to light that esteemed figures like factory driver Jonny Adam and Aston Martin stalwart Darren Turner were among those privileged to pilot the new marvel. 

Additionally, Phil Keen and Tomonobu Fujii, the latter hailing from the D’Station Aston squad in the WEC, also had the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the prospective racer.

The Evolution Vantage will be eligible for competition across series adhering to FIA GT3 regulations, encompassing events under the GT World Challenge, GT Daytona Pro, and GTD in IMSA. 

Furthermore, it will be a contender in the newly established LMGT3 category, replacing GTE Am for the forthcoming season in the WEC and the European Le Mans Series. While Aston Martin’s entry into LMGT3 in the WEC is highly anticipated, the identity of the designated team remains undisclosed, shrouded in intrigue for the time being.

Rohit’s remarkable innings of 131 left fans in awe as he demolished Afghanistan’s bowling attack while taking India close to the target of 272/8 with a staggering 15 overs to spare.

The match conditions couldn’t have been more favourable for Rohit, with short boundaries, a swift outfield, a flat wicket, a modest target, and dew all working in his favour. 

During his scintillating 84-ball innings, Rohit Sharma etched his name in the record books by surpassing Chris Gayle’s tally of sixes in international cricket, notching up the fastest World Cup century for India in just 63 deliveries, and surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most centuries in the global event.

While the start of India’s chase was measured, Rohit Sharma soon shifted gears, single-handedly taking on Afghanistan’s bowling attack. Fazalhaq Farooqi bore the brunt, conceding 31 runs in just 10 balls before being replaced. 

Naveen-ul-Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai faced a similar fate, leaking boundaries and sixes. Rohit’s dominance was evident as he accounted for 76 of India’s 94 runs in the powerplay.

Despite Rashid Khan’s reputation as a wicket-taker, Afghanistan curiously held him back until the 15th over, by which time Rohit Sharma had already amassed 88 off 52 balls. Rashid eventually got the better of Rohit, but not before experiencing the onslaught himself.

After Rohit’s departure, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer took over, steering India past the 200-run mark by the 25th over. Kohli’s unbeaten 55* and Iyer’s explosive 25* sealed the victory without further hiccups. 

It was Iyer’s colossal 101-metre hit off Mujeeb that stole the spotlight, while Kohli’s back-to-back fifties marked a strong start to his World Cup campaign.

Earlier in the day, Afghanistan’s Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai staged a recovery with a 121-run partnership, rescuing their team from a precarious 63/3. However, Jasprit Bumrah’s superb spell of 4-39 limited Afghanistan to 272/8, denying them a chance at a substantial total.

Bumrah’s early strikes disrupted Afghanistan’s momentum, and despite Shahidi and Omarzai’s valiant efforts, Bumrah’s return at the death proved decisive. His double blow reduced Afghanistan from 184/3 to 235/7, leaving India in a commanding position. Mujeeb and Rashid tried to stage a late resurgence, but Bumrah’s mastery closed the door, ensuring Afghanistan posted a modest total.

UNITED STATES: A California federal judge has ruled in favour of Google in the ongoing patent dispute with Sonos, throwing out the previously imposed USD 32.5 million penalty. The judge, William Alsup, declared Sonos’ multi-room smart speaker patents unenforceable, concurring with Google’s assertion that the smart audio company attempted to blend newer patents with ones dating back to 2006.

U.S. District Judge Alsup remarked, “This was not a case of an inventor leading the industry to something new. This was a case of the industry leading with something new and, only then, an inventor coming out of the woodwork to say that he had come up with the idea first.”

The contested patents, which Sonos alleged were infringed upon by Google, previously led to a jury verdict in Sonos’ favour this past May. However, Judge Alsup took a critical stance, stating, “It is wrong that our patent system was used in this way.” 

With its constitutional underpinnings, the system intends to promote and protect innovation. However, in this case, the judge felt that it was used to punish an innovator and enrich a pretender by delay and sleight of hand. Alsup lamented that it took a full trial to learn this sad fact, but he adds that justice is done.

Despite the decisive ruling, Sonos remains resolute in its position. A spokesperson for the company conveyed to the media that they believe the decision is “wrong on both the facts and the law,” signalling their intention to continue the legal battle. The latest development highlights the intensity of the patent dispute, with both tech giants poised for further legal manoeuvring in the days ahead.

UNITED STATES: Space station astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) breathed a sigh of relief on Monday (Oct. 9) after a coolant leak was swiftly contained on the Russian Nauka Multipurpose Laboratory Module (MLM). NASA officials confirmed that the crew was “never in any danger.”

Toxic ammonia flakes were detected around 1 p.m. EDT (1700 GMT) on the MLM, triggering immediate action from NASA’s Mission Control in Houston. Astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, on board the ISS, confirmed the backup radiator leak after conducting a visual assessment.

While it remains uncertain if the situation will necessitate a spacewalk by Roscosmos cosmonauts for repairs, NASA assured that there are no immediate impacts on crew safety or station operations. The primary radiator for Nauka remains operational, though the leak is under investigation, marking the latest in a series of incidents involving Russian ISS equipment.

Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, echoed NASA’s assessment, emphasizing that the temperature within the MLM remains stable, and operations, experiments, and crew activities continue as scheduled.

The leak originated from the backup radiator initially assigned to the Russian Rassvet module and was delivered to the ISS via space shuttle mission STS-132 in 2010. In April 2023, a Roscosmos spacewalk relocated the functional radiator to Nauka.

As a precaution, NASA has instructed Expedition 70 ISS astronauts to close all shutters on the U.S. segment to prevent potential contamination.

Ammonia plays a crucial role in cooling the ISS systems, and managing waste heat produced on the station. The warmed ammonia’s excess heat is dissipated into space via radiators, like the one on Nauka, allowing for continuous cooling.

This incident is the latest in a series of coolant leaks involving Russian equipment. Analysts like Jonathan McDowell suggest a potential systemic issue given the recurrence of these incidents.

In December 2022, a leak on the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft led to the cancellation of a scheduled Roscosmos spacewalk, highlighting the gravity of the situation. Roscosmos responded by deploying an empty replacement Soyuz, MS-23, and returning MS-22 to Earth for analysis.

Despite these challenges, the ISS is slated to remain operational until at least 2030, though Russia has currently committed only to 2028, amid ongoing tensions related to the conflict in Ukraine.

GERMANY: The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Euclid spacecraft, hailed as the dark universe detective, has successfully overcome a cosmic misidentification hiccup to get back on track in its mission to unravel the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy.

Launched on July 1, Euclid spacecraft embarked on a four-week journey to Lagrange point 2, a gravitationally stable zone in the Earth-Sun system. Upon arrival, it captured breathtaking images of the cosmos but encountered a stumbling block—Euclid’s Fine Guidance Sensor struggled to locate its guiding stars, crucial for precise navigation.

This glitch was traced to cosmic rays emitted by the sun during heightened solar activity. These rays interfered with the sensor, generating signals that Euclid mistakenly identified as stars. 

Additionally, stray light and solar X-rays further impeded the spacecraft. Consequently, genuine stars were outnumbered by artifacts, preventing Euclid from accurately resolving star patterns for navigation.

Despite these initial setbacks, ESA’s dedicated mission control teams tirelessly worked to equip Euclid spacecraft for its space environment. A software patch was crafted and tested on an electric model of Euclid on Earth before being deployed in orbit at Lagrange Point 2, situated approximately 1 million miles from home. 

After ten days of rigorous testing, the Fine Guidance Sensor is now functioning as intended, and Euclid’s guide stars have been successfully pinpointed once more.

With these hurdles overcome, Euclid spacecraft is poised to resume its vital performance verification phase, which was temporarily halted in August. This phase marks the last step before Euclid commences his groundbreaking exploration of the dark universe.

The spacecraft will scrutinize a third of the sky over Earth and survey cosmic history spanning over 10 billion years, constructing 3D models of galaxies to uncover the universe’s evolution and the role of dark matter. Additionally, Euclid spacecraft will investigate large-scale galactic disturbances, shedding light on the accelerating influence of dark energy.

ESA’s Director of Science, Carole Mundell, expressed excitement for the upcoming phase, anticipating the transformative impact Euclid will have on our comprehension of the enigmatic dark universe.
