QATAR: The Formula 1 world is currently under the reign of Max Verstappen, who clinched his third consecutive World Championship title with a powerful performance at the Qatar Grand Prix.

However, according to Le Mans class winner Richard Bradley, the true measure of Verstappen’s greatness may only be revealed when Red Bull’s dominance wanes, a pattern seen historically in the sport.

Verstappen’s 2023 season has been nothing short of extraordinary, with an astounding 14 wins out of 17 races, setting him on track to surpass his record of 15 wins in a single season from the previous year.

Bradley pointed out examples of past interventions by the FIA and F1 that impacted teams like Williams and Ferrari, implying that such a scenario might eventually befall Red Bull. It’s at this juncture, Bradley suggests, that we will truly witness the extent of Max Verstappen’s prowess.

UNITED STATES: The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting on Sunday, addressing the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The United States urged all 15 members to strongly condemn the “heinous terrorist attacks committed by Hamas,” though no immediate action was taken.

U.S. Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood revealed that while a significant number of countries did condemn the Hamas attacks, not all council members voiced their condemnation. He alluded to the fact that one nation refrained from doing so.

Russia’s U.N. Ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, countered assertions that Russia failed to condemn the attacks, emphasizing, “We condemn all the attacks on civilians.” Nebenzia underscored the urgent need to cease hostilities and engage in meaningful negotiations, a process that has stalled for decades.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the condemnation of all attacks on civilians and urging a return to the two-state solution. Ambassador Jun emphasized the paramount importance of preventing further escalation and civilian casualties.

Wood, highlighting U.S. priorities, emphasized the condemnation of Hamas for their “unprovoked invasion and terrorist attacks.” He pressed for an end to the group’s violent activities against Israeli citizens, stating that discussions on a two-state solution could follow once immediate issues were addressed.

The Security Council, tasked with maintaining global peace and security, aims to articulate its stance in the coming days. The challenge lies in reconciling differences over condemning Hamas, addressing civilian casualties, and formulating language to halt violence and resume negotiations.

Malta’s U.N. Ambassador, Vanessa Frazier, emphasized that any condemnation must predominantly target Hamas, recognizing the plight of Palestinian civilians placed in harm’s way by the group.

UN Mideast envoy Tor Wennesland briefed council members virtually, painting a grim picture of the situation as “precarious” and “awful,” with fear gripping both sides.

Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh of the United Arab Emirates stressed the collective need for calm and de-escalation, prioritizing the protection of civilians on both sides.

Wood emphasized the fluid and perilous nature of the situation, emphasizing the Biden administration’s concerted efforts to prevent further conflict.

Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan accused Hamas of perpetrating “blatant, documented war crimes,” recounting horrifying details of attacks on civilians. Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour called for an immediate end to the violence, condemning the blockade of Gaza and advocating for a new political approach.

In this critical juncture, the international community anxiously awaits decisive action from the Security Council to quell the escalating crisis and pave the way for lasting peace.

QATAR: Multiple Formula 1 drivers have voiced their concerns following an exceptionally challenging Qatar Grand Prix marked by scorching temperatures and demanding track conditions on Sunday.

The extreme heat at the Lusail International Circuit, combined with the physically taxing track layout and the need for frequent pit stops, pushed drivers to their physical limits.

Esteban Ocon, of Alpine Racing, revealed that he had vomited inside his helmet during the race, while Logan Sargeant was forced to retire due to “intense dehydration.” Even Williams’ teammate Alex Albon required medical treatment for “acute heat exposure.”

Ocon described the challenging conditions, saying, “I don’t think we particularly see in the cockpit too well, so it must have been like 80 degrees inside the car today. I’m glad that next year we come back in December.”

Lando Norris, who finished third in the race, criticized the scheduling of the event, stating that it was “dangerous” for drivers. He emphasized that it’s not a matter of drivers needing more training, as they already push their limits inside the hot and physically demanding cars.

Max Verstappen echoed Norris’s sentiments, adding that some of the drivers who struggled in the heat were exceptionally fit. He argued that there’s a limit to what should be allowed in terms of race conditions.

Oscar Piastri, who secured second place in the race, expressed relief that the weather on race day wasn’t as hot as earlier in the week. However, he still acknowledged that it was the toughest race he had ever experienced and called for discussions about improving race conditions.

Charles Leclerc, a Ferrari driver, described the Qatar Grand Prix as the most challenging race in every driver’s career. He attributed this to the combination of scorching heat, high-speed corners, and the need for three pit stops.

Formula 1 is set to return to Qatar in December during the 2024 season, with hopes that cooler temperatures will provide a safer and more comfortable racing experience for the drivers.

UNITED STATES: Mitsubishi Motors North America has reported a remarkable surge in vehicle sales for the third quarter of 2023, with a 32 percent year-over-year increase to 22,196 units. Notably, nearly one in ten new Mitsubishi’s sold during this period was a rechargeable model.

In a promising trend, Mitsubishi’s Outlander PHEV, their sole plug-in model, is gaining substantial traction in the market, setting yet another quarterly record. In the third quarter alone, 1,887 Outlander PHEVs found homes, marking a staggering improvement from just six units sold the previous year. This surge accounted for an impressive 8.5 percent of the brand’s total volume.

For reference, Mitsubishi’s internal combustion engine Outlander recorded 9,340 sales, maintaining a lead over the PHEV with a ratio of 5:1. Throughout the year, Mitsubishi has seen an exceptional surge in Outlander PHEV sales, amounting to 5,104 units, marking a 351% increase from the previous year. These figures constitute 7.5 percent of Mitsubishi’s total volume, showcasing a promising shift towards electrification.

Comparing this to 2022, where Mitsubishi sold 1,961 PHEVs, comprising a mere 2.3 percent of their total volume, the growth is striking. The automaker has already surpassed its full-year record from 2018 (4,166 sales) within nine months and is on track to exceed 7,000 sales in 2023.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, equipped with a 20-kilowatt-hour battery, boasts an EPA all-electric range of 38 miles, for a total range of 420 miles. Priced at $40,345 plus a destination/handling charge of $1,445 (or $1,570 in Alaska and Hawaii), it offers an enticing option for eco-conscious consumers.

Looking ahead, Mitsubishi has ambitious plans to introduce more rechargeable models before the decade’s end. While specific details remain undisclosed, it is anticipated that these new offerings will be closely linked to Nissan’s plug-in lineup, given their financial ties and participation in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Expect exciting developments, including electric pickups and SUVs, to hit the market by 2028.

As Verstappen piloted his RB19 to a commendable second-place finish, securing the championship, Perez’s race took a disastrous turn. His car sat forlornly in the gravel, a stark symbol of his misfortune this season. 

Rosberg’s empathetic observation highlighted the immense pressure on Perez, drawing parallels to Lance Stroll’s challenges at Aston Martin. “Watching Checo there and his interview, you can see how it’s just not fun at all,” Rosberg remarked.

Perez’s struggles raise questions about the factors contributing to his difficult season. With Verstappen’s performance at an extraordinary level, the mental toll on Perez has been substantial. The fear of being outperformed further exacerbates the situation, resulting in a negative spiral that impacts his on-track performance.

Sergio claims that it’s difficult to feel the car at times; however, one of the biggest problems he faces is the level of just Max Verstappen. Rosberg attributed Perez’s difficulties to the mental toll of the performance gap and the fear that Verstappen would continue to outshine him.

UNITED STATES: The once-irresistible allure of tech giants like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Apple seems to be waning, with a noticeable decline in interest from business school graduates. While Amazon still holds some appeal, the sheen has dulled for the others. Recent MBA graduates are increasingly turning to smaller companies, seeking recognition, meaningful projects, and a healthy work-life balance.

Between 2022 and 2023, technology conglomerates collectively shed 200,000 jobs, despite soaring profits. The brunt of these layoffs fell on American employees, and in Spain, dismay rippled through the student and job candidate pools. 

Diego Álvarez, a 27-year-old pursuing a master’s degree in digital marketing, cites Google’s lengthy selection process and inadequate compensation for gruelling hours as factors in his decision to look elsewhere. Like many of his peers, Álvarez finds the camaraderie and impact potential in smaller firms more appealing.

Business schools are noting a shift in student interest away from the tech giants, with a corresponding decrease in job opportunities. Job offer statistics from InfoJobs reveal a marginal decrease of just over 1% compared to the previous year. Amazon, which bolstered its workforce during the pandemic, is now slowing down hiring and even laying off workers.

Patrick Waller, director of IESE Business School’s career development centre, noted, “It’s no longer a top recruiter at business schools.” Job Market Insights, an analytical platform for job offers, affirms that Amazon’s job offerings have halved since 2022. Nevertheless, the company asserts its ongoing commitment to hiring, having inaugurated two new logistics centres in Spain with a vision of employing 25,000 by 2025. 

MBA hires in the technology sector have plummeted from 18% to 10% this year, while the consulting sector has experienced a surge from 33% to 50%, fueled by lucrative offers from industry leaders like McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, AT Kearney, and Bain, particularly for positions in Dubai.

InfoJobs reports that the Big Four consulting firms are at the forefront of job offers, exhibiting a 3.6% increase this year. Students at Spain’s ESADE Business & Law School are pivoting towards tech consulting roles, seeking opportunities for substantial societal impact. 

Start-ups, once seen as underdogs, are now offering positions in sustainability, artificial intelligence, and other fields once monopolized by their larger counterparts.

In this new paradigm, Raúl González Martín, director of professional development at ESIC, asserts, “Young people now prioritize companies that value their employees.” They yearn for a balance between work and life, well-defined objectives, and a measure of autonomy. Smaller firms, known for their adaptability and nimbleness, are better poised to meet these demands.

Nacho de Pinedo, CEO of ISDI, suggests that recent graduates are gravitating towards socially responsible firms with a nurturing work environment, remote work flexibility, and generous time off policies. As candidates assert their preferences, companies are racing to transform their image to align with these evolving paradigms.

UNITED STATES: Nissan North America has initiated a recall of 9,813 model-year 2023 Ariya electric vehicles (EVs) due to a potential software defect related to the drive motor. The issue, identified through reports filed by the Japanese automaker with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), revolves around the vehicle’s inverter software.

According to the summary report, the inverter software has the potential to detect a short circuit, leading to an abrupt shutdown of the EV system. This results in a loss of drive power. 

The recall encompasses both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the Ariya, as the model employs a distinctive motor type. Other Nissan or Infiniti vehicles remain unaffected.

Nissan anticipates that all recalled vehicles may possess the identified defect. The report indicates that minuscule fragments of conductive material from a drive motor component could momentarily trigger a short circuit in the slip rings. These rotary electrical devices are crucial for the efficient operation of the motor.

As a precautionary measure, the power supply to the driven wheels may be momentarily severed to prevent harm to internal components. This action prompts an “EV System Off” warning on the dashboard. 

Additionally, torque to the driven wheels may be temporarily cut off until the system is restarted from a “fail-safe mode.” However, if this occurs during high-speed driving, it could potentially lead to an accident.

To rectify this issue, dealers will reprogram the inverter software at no cost to owners. Notifications will be dispatched to affected owners by October 20, 2023. The problem was initially identified by Nissan in January 2022, with a subsequent complaint lodged by an Ariya owner in China. Several similar reports also surfaced in California and Oklahoma in September 2023.

This incident marks the second setback for the Ariya model this year. Earlier, the brand recalled over 1,000 models in North America due to the risk of the steering wheel detaching from the steering column, attributed to a potentially loose or missing bolt. These repeated recalls may potentially impact the rollout of the Ariya in the US, which commenced this year.

In the first half of 2023, Nissan recorded the sale of 9,400 electric cars in the US, a figure dwarfed by its competitors. Among these, the Ariya commanded the largest share with 5,195 units sold. Meanwhile, sales of the Leaf model experienced a 44 percent year-over-year drop, with only 4,234 deliveries. Notably, both models are ineligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit.

GREAT BRITAIN: Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has intensified his criticism of Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko’s recent comments about Sergio Perez, denouncing them as “madness” in today’s progressive era.

Marko stirred controversy after misidentifying Perez, Formula 1’s sole Mexican driver, as South American following the Italian Grand Prix last month. He went on to suggest that Perez’s performance alongside teammate Max Verstappen in 2023 was influenced by his background.

In the lead-up to the Singapore Grand Prix, it was revealed that Marko personally apologized to Perez, with Mercedes leading the charge in condemning the 80-year-old’s remarks. 

Lewis Hamilton, an outspoken advocate against discrimination, deemed Marko’s comments “completely unacceptable.” Wolff echoed these sentiments, expressing disbelief that such a mindset could exist in Formula 1.

Wolff further emphasized that age should not serve as an excuse for Marko’s comments. He stated, “Such statements are madness in our time. They can’t be excused by his age. But I think he has learned his lesson.”

Max Verstappen is poised to secure his third consecutive World Championship title at the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix. A sixth-place finish in the sprint race on Saturday would be sufficient to clinch the crown.

Wolff, currently absent from Lusail due to recent knee surgery, appeared to downplay Verstappen’s achievements. After Verstappen notched a record 10th consecutive win at the Italian Grand Prix last month, Wolff remarked that such statistics were only relevant on Wikipedia.

Despite the rivalry between Mercedes and Red Bull, which intensified during the 2021 Championship battle between Hamilton and Verstappen, Wolff asserted that he would extend congratulations to his competitors, particularly compatriot Helmut Marko, upon Verstappen’s title win. 

While Hamilton triumphed during F1’s prior visit to Qatar in 2021, which stands as his second-to-last F1 victory to date, Wolff believes Mercedes may have to wait until races in Mexico and Brazil for their next realistic chances at victory. 

When asked if Hamilton could contend for another win this weekend, Wolff responded, “No. With so many corners, our car is still unpredictable. I expect more in Mexico or Brazil. Until then, I want to be fit and on the spot again.”

UNITED STATES: Virgin Galactic’s “Galactic 04” mission marked a historic milestone by sending the first Pakistani astronaut, Namira Salim, into space. The mission, which took off from New Mexico’s Spaceport America on the morning of October 6, witnessed Salim, the founder and chairperson of the nonprofit Space Trust, embark on an extraordinary journey beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

This triumph comes hot on the heels of Virgin Galactic’s Galactic 02 flight, where the first former Olympian and a pioneering mother-daughter duo voyaged into space. Notably, the daughter in this duo, 18-year-old Anastasia Mayers, clinched the title of the youngest-ever space flyer during the mission.

Galactic 04’s launch commenced at 11:28 a.m. EDT, as Virgin Galactic’s VSS Unity space plane soared skyward beneath the wings of its carrier craft, VMS Eve. Eve gracefully released Unity at 12:10 p.m. EDT, at an altitude of 44,341 feet, paving the way for Unity’s rocket motor to ignite, propelling it into suborbital space at an astonishing top speed of Mach 2.95.

Salim, accompanied by fellow space tourists Trevor Beattie, a British advertising executive, and Ron Rosano, an American astronomy educator, relished moments of weightlessness while gazing at Earth against the cosmic void. Their voyage reached its zenith at 54.3 miles above the Earth’s surface.

At approximately 12:25 p.m. EDT, Unity triumphantly touched down at Spaceport America, concluding the awe-inspiring journey. Inside Unity’s cabin was Beth Moses, Virgin Galactic’s chief astronaut instructor, while Kelly Latimer and C.J. Sturckow skillfully piloted the space plane. Nicola Pecile and Jameel Janjua commanded VMS Eve during the mission.

Galactic 04, as its name implies, marked Virgin’s fourth commercial spaceflight, propelling Rosano, Beattie, and Salim to become the company’s 17th, 18th, and 19th astronauts, respectively. This accomplishment further elevates Salim’s remarkable list of adventures, solidifying her status as the first Pakistani to conquer both the North and South Poles.

Namira Salim, a “Founder Astronaut” of Virgin Galactic since 2006, purchased her ticket for $200,000, a price that has since appreciated to $450,000. While Virgin Galactic faces competition from Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ aerospace venture, the latter’s New Shepard vehicle has been grounded since an uncrewed research flight mishap in September 2022.
