Kostecki Dominates Practice Session, Claims Provisional Pole for Repco Bathurst 1000

0

AUSTRALIA: Erebus driver Kostecki left his competition trailing behind, securing a provisional pole for the Repco Bathurst 1000 with a blistering 2m04.664s lap. This remarkable performance ensures he will run last in the Top 10 Shootout on Saturday evening, a critical event that will determine the first five rows of the grid.

However, Kostecki’s closest title rival, Shane van Gisbergen, faced a nerve-wracking session. Only in the final moments did he manage to secure his spot in the shootout with the seventh-fastest time.

Contrastingly, Jake Brown encountered a series of challenges, missing the shootout altogether after an early mishap that sent his Erebus Camaro into the Turn 2 tyre wall.

Brown’s early incident prompted a red flag, but his determined crew managed swift repairs, allowing him to rejoin the fray. When the action resumed, Cam Waters showcased his prowess, becoming the first to breach the 2m04s barrier in a Gen3 car. Yet, it was Kostecki who stole the show, surging ahead with a jaw-dropping 2m04.664s lap.

While Golding and De Pasquale managed to break into the 2m04s territory, Kostecki maintained a solid lead, over a tenth of a second ahead. Despite a final push from the lead group, the standings remained unchanged, with Kostecki claiming the provisional pole, followed by Golding and De Pasquale.

Meanwhile, van Gisbergen’s last-ditch effort secured him a seventh-place finish, keeping his pole position aspirations alive. The stage is set for an electrifying Top 10 shootout, promising fans an adrenaline-fueled spectacle.

The 2023 Repco Bathurst 1000 promises further excitement with two more practice sessions and the much-anticipated Top 10 Shootout on Saturday.

Kostecki’s sensational performance has undoubtedly set the stage for a thrilling race day, leaving fans on the edge of their seats in anticipation.

Rumors Suggest Nintendo’s Next Console to Emulate Sony and Microsoft’s Playbook

UNITED STATES: As anticipation swells for Nintendo’s forthcoming console, speculations about the enigmatic “Switch 2” continue to flood the gaming community. The most recent insights stem from a reliable source known for previous leaks that proved accurate.

Media sources assert that Nintendo is poised to adopt a strategy akin to Sony and Microsoft, introducing a digital-only model alongside the traditional physical game-compatible version for their next console.

Reportedly, the digital variant is priced at $400, while the standard edition, accommodating physical game cartridges, is slated for $449. This marks a notable increase from the current Switch’s standalone price of £259.99 on Nintendo’s official website.

According to SoldierDelta, the proposed launch date is September 24, 2024, aligning with earlier rumours of a late 2024 release window. However, an alternative date of November 3, 2024, has been cited as a contingency plan should any setbacks arise.

These revelations, initially disseminated on Discord, have since been widely circulated across various platforms. Additional insights were shared on the Famiboards forum, where SoldierDelta acknowledged that pricing and launch dates may undergo revisions.

Notably, the absence of an OLED screen and the inclusion of augmented reality (AR) capabilities on the next Nintendo console were also reaffirmed.

Nintendo has maintained an air of secrecy regarding its upcoming console, offering scant official details. Although the information remains speculative, SoldierDelta’s track record of accuracy lends credence to these reports.

While acknowledging the existence of a “next console,” Nintendo has committed to supporting the current Switch beyond March 2024, hinting at unannounced projects in the pipeline, such as “Princess Peach: Showtime!” and the eagerly anticipated “Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door” remake.

BlackBerry Announces Strategic Split: IoT and Cybersecurity Units to Separate

0

CANADA: Waterloo, Ontario-based technology firm BlackBerry has unveiled plans to divide its Internet of Things (IoT) and cybersecurity business units, with a subsidiary initial public offering (IPO) for the IoT division slated for the next fiscal year.

The move follows a trend among companies in recent years, opting for a leaner corporate structure to enable investors to better assess individual business performances.

This decision comes in the wake of the recent spinoff of packaged food conglomerate Kellogg Co., which has been rebranded, demonstrating a strategic shift. Likewise, healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson and industrial conglomerate General Electric have embarked on similar endeavours, parting ways with certain units.

BlackBerry’s CEO, John Chen, remarked, “Both the IoT and Cyber businesses… address large and growing market opportunities. This new proposed structure will further increase both their operational agility and ability to focus on delivering exceptional solutions.”

Following this announcement, BlackBerry’s U.S.-listed shares surged over 4% in after-hours trading. This uptick follows an 18% dip after reports surfaced in August of a buyout offer from private equity firm Veritas Capital.

BlackBerry had previously disclosed in May its contemplation of strategic options for its diverse portfolio, which included the potential separation of specific businesses. In the preceding year, the company decided to discontinue its smartphone division and has since sought buyers for its legacy patents associated with mobile devices.

Founded in 1997, BlackBerry swiftly gained prominence for its ubiquitous business-oriented smartphones, which were embraced by executives, politicians, and a devoted fanbase in the early 2000s.

In the latest quarterly report released last week, the company disclosed a total revenue of $132 million, a decline from the previous year’s $168 million. The IoT division contributed $49 million, while cybersecurity generated $79 million in revenue.

Microsoft Defender Resolves Flagging Issue, Allowing Smooth Tor Browser Experience

UNITED STATES: In a recent development, Microsoft Defender has officially acknowledged and rectified its false identification of the Tor Browser as malware, following a battle with the Tor Project to clarify the situation. The problem emerged within TorBrowser version 12.5.6 when Microsoft Defender erroneously categorized an executable file as unsafe.

However, the Tor Project spokesperson confirmed that this file was identical, byte-for-byte, to the previous version 12.5.5, dispelling any suspicions of malicious intent. For users of TorBrowser, this issue resulted in the tor.exe file being flagged as a trojan, specifically labelled as “Win32/Malgent!MTB,” rendering the software unusable for affected individuals.

During the interim period, some users reported success by reverting to the previous build (12.5.5), which did not trigger Windows Defender’s trojan response. The update from Microsoft followed Tor Project’s efforts to engage with the tech giant.

Tor shared the .exe file with Microsoft for inspection, leading to the following response: “At this time, the submitted files do not meet our criteria for malware or potentially unwanted applications. The detection has been removed.”

Users encountering difficulties with TorBrowser were advised to ensure that their Windows Defender was up to date and either unquarantine the tor.exe file or reinstall TorBrowser from the official Tor Project website. The latest signature database (1.397.1910.0) no longer identifies the tor.exe file as problematic.

The exact reason behind Windows Defender’s initial misidentification of the unchanged tor.exe file remains unclear. This resolution signifies a positive outcome for Tor Browser users, restoring their ability to browse securely and anonymously without the unnecessary interference of Microsoft Defender’s false malware alerts.

FIA Doubles Testing Laps for F1 Teams in Landmark Rule Change

0

GREAT BRITAIN: The FIA has announced a groundbreaking revision in Formula 1 regulations, doubling the allowable testing laps during filming events, effective from the upcoming season. This decision comes after persistent appeals from teams who argued for greater flexibility in their practice sessions.

Compared to other sports, F1 drivers and teams have been operating under stringent practice limitations. While simulation time remains unrestricted, track practice has been confined to two promotional events and two demonstration events, in addition to F1-organised testing days.

Teams have frequently voiced their discontent with this timeframe, prompting the FIA’s reconsideration. Constructors will now have the freedom to run for twice the duration during promotional events.

One of the pivotal factors driving this adjustment is the recognition that while wind tunnel testing coupled with simulations yields precise results, certain nuances escape detection. The “porpoising” phenomenon in 2022 serves as a vivid illustration, as it eluded detection during in-house tests.

To enhance the development of cars and address such oversights, the cap on promotional events has been raised from 100km to 200km, equivalent to approximately 40 laps of a standard circuit.

Additional refinements have been introduced concerning component usage and demonstration events. Teams are no longer obliged to notify their competitors of testing, and a new rule dictates that parts employed in testing on older cars must have previously featured in a race weekend.

Advocates for increased testing, including McLaren CEO Zak Brown, assert that limited track time has led to a uniform appearance among cars. Brown added that he would like to see more testing time to develop the current generation of F1 cars.

He argues that since the FIA has implemented the cost cap, they can free up some of the rules and let teams develop the cars more freely since they are all capped by how much they can spend.

Google Bard Unveils New ‘Memory’ Feature for Personalized User Experience

UNITED STATES: Google Bard, the tech giant’s formidable contender against ChatGPT and Bing Chat, is set to introduce an innovative feature known as ‘Memory’. This cutting-edge addition empowers the AI-powered chatbot to retain crucial user-specific information.

This upcoming functionality is poised to revolutionize the way Bard users receive recommendations tailored to their preferences. While conventional searches yield generic results, the introduction of the ‘Memory’ toggle promises a more personalized approach, drawing from the user’s search history and individual inclinations.

The ‘Memory’ feature is demonstrated in the accompanying image, wherein the user provided Google Bard with specific instructions such as ‘avoid eating meat’ and ‘I have 2 kids’.

Remarkably, these details were later incorporated by the chatbot to curate travel suggestions and recipe recommendations. This mirrors the recently introduced ‘custom instructions’ feature in ChatGPT.

Accessing Google Bard’s Memory page is conveniently situated on the left side of the menu, where users can effortlessly append further preferences or remove existing ones.

For those concerned about privacy, the option to disable the feature is readily available on the left side of the screen. Though Google is in the process of a gradual rollout for the ‘Memory’ feature, it is anticipated that users will be able to experience its benefits in due course.

In the previous month, Google introduced an array of enhancements, including Bard extensions, enabling seamless interaction with various Google services like Drive and Gmail, as well as extending support for over 40 languages. Notably, the tech giant has also made strides in reducing false information, with Bard results now being corroborated by Google Search results.

Natural Light Exposure Shows Promise in Managing Type 2 Diabetes

0

GERMANY: New research presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Hamburg, Germany, suggests that increased exposure to natural light could hold the key to treating and preventing type 2 diabetes. Conducted by a team led by Ivo Habets from Maastricht University, the study highlights the critical role of circadian rhythms in metabolic health.

Habets explained, “The misalignment of our internal circadian clock with the demands of a 24/7 society is associated with an increased incidence of metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes.”

Natural daylight, he emphasized, serves as a powerful zeitgeber (environmental cue) for the circadian clock, yet most individuals spend their days indoors under artificial lighting.

The study, involving 13 participants with type 2 diabetes, meticulously controlled exposure to natural and artificial light over 4.5-day periods. Blood sugar levels were continuously monitored, revealing that during the natural light phase, glucose levels remained within the normal range for a greater proportion of time compared to the artificial light phase.

Furthermore, participants exhibited a higher propensity to shift from carbohydrate to fat metabolism in the presence of natural light. Key clock genes, Per1 and Cry1, which govern circadian rhythms, were found to be more active under natural light conditions.

While Habets acknowledges the significance of the findings about diabetes management, he emphasizes the broader implications for metabolic health.

The research shows that the type of light humans are exposed to can affect their metabolism. If a person works in an office with almost no exposure to natural light, it will have an impact on their metabolism and their risk or control of type 2 diabetes.

He concludes with a call for further research to elucidate the precise impact of artificial light on metabolism and to determine optimal durations of exposure to natural light for metabolic health.

Mercedes Prepares for F1 2024 Comeback with Unified Feedback from Hamilton and Russell

0

UNITED KINGDOM: As the F1 2023 season proceeds to its later stages, Mercedes is already setting its sights on a resurgence in the ground-effect era of Formula 1 with its eyes fixed firmly on the 2024 title.

Former F1 driver Anthony Davidson has lauded the synchronicity of feedback from Lewis Hamilton and George Russell as a “luxury” for the Silver Arrows, offering them a clear roadmap forward.

While Mercedes faced setbacks in 2022 and 2023, Red Bull soared to dominance, leaving the Silver Arrows striving for a competitive edge. However, with the 2023 season concluding in Abu Dhabi, the team is poised to hit the reset button and seek fresh glory in 2024.

Hamilton and Russell have united in their determination to revive Mercedes’ championship aspirations. Their shared vision for the team’s direction provides a substantial advantage, according to Davidson.

Former Aston Martin strategy chief Bernie Collins emphasizes that Mercedes’ blank canvas for the W15 offers a strategic edge. The decision to discard the unique ‘zero pod’ concept in Monaco marked a pivotal step, paving the way for a more cohesive approach with the W15.

Collins notes that Mercedes will be starting from a ground-up design for next year while comparing the situation with McLaren and Aston Martin, which faced significant infrastructure changes.

This positions Mercedes strongly for a comprehensive overhaul and potentially crucial gains in lap time.

With their last victory in F1 dating back to the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Mercedes is primed for a resurgence. The unified feedback from their star drivers, coupled with a clean slate for the W15, sets the stage for an exciting comeback in the 2024 season.

Jaguar Land Rover Unveils Plans for Eight Electric Vehicles in India by 2030

INDIA: Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), a subsidiary of Tata Motors, has set its sights on a greener future in India, announcing plans to launch eight battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the country by 2030. This ambitious initiative was disclosed by Lennard Hoornik, JLR’s Chief Commercial Officer, highlighting the automaker’s commitment to sustainable mobility.

Currently, the Indian market is offered just one electric model by the company, the Jaguar I-Pace. However, this is set to change with the introduction of the Range Rover BEV, with orders opening next year and deliveries slated for 2025.

Hoornik praised India’s rapid progress in transitioning to electric mobility. He underscored the vital role of government subsidies, charging infrastructure development, and the availability of high-quality electric vehicles in driving the adoption of eco-friendly cars in India.

Recognizing the financial considerations associated with electric vehicles, Hoornik emphasized the importance of subsidies in accelerating the shift towards green transportation. He acknowledged that initial subsidies could be instrumental in overcoming the cost barrier, especially with regard to expensive battery technology.

Looking ahead, JLR aims to expand its popular Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Defender brands in the Indian market, integrating electrification into these product lines.

Each of the company’s four brands—Jaguar, Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender—will have tailored growth strategies, catering to distinct audiences and retail landscapes.

India has proven to be a promising market for JLR, experiencing a remarkable sales surge, with figures soaring over 100% in the April-June period of the fiscal year. Hoornik attributed this success to the trust associated with JLR being part of the Tata Group, a conglomerate renowned for its reliability.

Furthermore, Tata Group’s recent announcement of a £4 billion investment to establish a flagship battery factory in England aligns perfectly with JLR’s electrification plans.

This gigafactory, set to be one of the largest in Europe, signifies a monumental step towards the electrified future of JLR’s vehicles, reinforcing the company’s dedication to sustainable transportation.
