Akshaya Tritiya: The Auspicious Day That Brings Wealth and Prosperity

0

INDIA: Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is an important Hindu festival celebrated on the third day of the bright half of the Vaishakha lunar month (April-May).

Hindus and Jains consider the day auspicious, and they believe that any new venture started on this day will be successful and bring good fortune. The festival’s long and fascinating history dates back to ancient times.

According to Hindu scriptures, it was on this day that Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, incarnated as Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu, and destroyed the evil Kshatriya rulers, who had become tyrannical and were causing suffering to the people.

Another legend associated with the day is that of the Pandavas, the five brothers from the epic Mahabharata.

According to the scripture, when the Pandavas were serving their exile, they received the Akshaya Patra, a vessel that would provide an unlimited supply of food, on this day from Lord Krishna. The vessel helped them to sustain themselves during their exile in the forest.

The word Akshaya, in Sanskrit, means ‘eternal’ or ‘never diminishing’. According to beliefs, anything started on this day will never diminish and continue to grow in value. This belief is why many people start new business ventures, invest, or buy property on Akshaya Tritiya.

People in different parts of India celebrate the festival in different ways

In the northern and western parts of India, people usually buy gold, silver, or other precious metals on this day. They believe buying these metals on Akshaya Tritiya will bring good luck and prosperity. Many jewellers offer special discounts and schemes on this day to attract customers.

In southern India, people usually perform puja (worship) of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. They also prepare unique dishes like Payasam, a sweet dish made with rice, milk, and sugar, and offer it as prasad (offering) to the deities.

In some parts of India, especially in Maharashtra, people celebrate the day by planting new crops or starting new construction projects. They make investments on the day because anything started on Akshaya Tritiya is believed to grow and prosper.

In recent years, the festival has gained popularity among non-resident Indians (NRIs) as well. Many NRIs choose to invest in real estate or buy gold today, believing it will bring good fortune.

Akshaya Tritiya is a day when people start new ventures, make investments, and buy properties, hoping to bring them success and wealth.

Whether buying gold or silver, performing puja, or starting new projects, Hindus celebrate the day with great enthusiasm and joy.

Mercedes Shake Up Technical Structure with James Allison’s Return as Technical Director

0

UNITED KINGDOM: Mercedes have announced a major reshuffle of their technical structure following a poor start to the 2023 Formula One season.

James Allison, who stepped aside from day-to-day involvement in the race team in 2021, has been re-appointed as the Mercedes F1 team’s technical director.

He will replace Mike Elliott, who will take over Allison’s Chief Technical Officer (CTO) role.

The changes have come about due to an internal review of the team’s technical organisation led by Elliott himself.

A Mercedes spokesperson confirmed that the team is focusing on building a better car and a good team to develop that car. Mercedes wants everybody will play to their greatest strengths in the team.

Mercedes have struggled with their car ever since the new technical regulations took over, coinciding with the changes to its technical structure that saw Allison step down from his role as technical director.

Allison’s day-to-day involvement in designing the team’s F1 cars ceased. The British engineer moved to a more strategic role and other projects, such as America’s Cup, which collaborates with Mercedes’ shareholder and sponsor INEOS.

However, the significant changes to the F1 regulations for 2022, introducing ground-effect-based downforce, have seen Mercedes fall behind Red Bull, who have taken over at the top of the sport.

Mercedes’ different aerodynamic philosophy, with the most notable element being the ‘no-sidepods’ design, has yet to be capable of challenging Red Bull and, usually, Ferrari.

After sticking with the philosophy for 2023, team boss Toto Wolff recently admitted that the philosophy was the wrong choice and that his team had “got it wrong” by continuing with the “zeropod” concept.

Lewis Hamilton also expressed his dissatisfaction, saying that the team’s engineers did not listen to his opinion about what he wanted with the car for 2023.

As part of the internal review, Mercedes refocused chief designer John Owen’s roles in car design after being distracted by budget cap compliance, with his deputy, Giacomo Tortora, being assigned the role of engineering director.

Mercedes are the second team to have significantly restructured their technical personnel after a poor start to 2023.

McLaren dropped technical director James Key to replace him with a technical triumvirate focusing on three different areas of engineering.

The return of James Allison as technical director will undoubtedly be a critical coup for Mercedes, given his wealth of experience and success in the sport.

Whether it will be enough to turn their fortunes around and challenge Red Bull for the title remains to be seen.

IPL 2023: Jadeja and Conway Lead the Way as CSK Cruises to Victory against SRH

0

INDIA: In a match that saw the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) dominate the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the home team secured a comfortable seven-wicket win on Friday.

Led by Ravindra Jadeja’s excellent bowling performance, CSK restricted SRH to 134 for seven after being put into bat, with Jadeja taking three wickets for just 22 runs. Devon Conway’s unbeaten 77 off 57 balls helped the hosts chase down the total with eight deliveries to spare.

CSK Vs SRH

SRH started steadily, with Abhishek Sharma and Harry Brook opening the batting. Despite some early boundaries, Brook lost his wicket while attempting a cut off Akash Singh’s bowling.

However, with Abhishek Sharma playing well, the visitors scored 45 runs in the powerplay, losing only one wicket. The middle overs collapsed SRH’s innings, with Jadeja dismissing Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathi in successive overs.

The lower order struggled to get going, and SRH finished with a below-par total.

https://twitter.com/IPL/status/1649439656352837633?t=SxliDmsBK_mR1refi0jIcg&s=19

Chasing a low target, Chennai openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway got a strong start, scoring five boundaries in the first 14 balls of the chase.

Conway scored at less than run-a-ball for a brief period, but his attack on Jansen in the final over of the powerplay destroyed SRH’s aspirations as CSK sped to 60 for no loss by the time the powerplay was complete.

Despite losing Gaikwad to a run-out and Mayank Markande dismissing Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu quickly, CSK reached the target without much trouble.

Conway relieved some of the pressure by hitting boundaries off the final two balls of the 18th over, and Moeen Ali ended the contest with a boundary over mid-on.

Despite the win, CSK is in third place on the points table, trailing only the Rajasthan Royals and the Lucknow Super Giants on Net Run Rate.

CSK will head to Kolkata to face KKR in the next match, while SRH will face Delhi Capitals in their next home match.

Overall, it was an excellent performance by CSK, with Ravindra Jadeja and Devon Conway standing out as the heroes of the match.

With their convincing win, CSK has sent a strong message to the rest of the league, and fans can look forward to more exciting games as the tournament progresses.

Mercedes Boss Wolff Says Upgrades Are Coming to Close Gap with Red Bull

0

UNITED KINGDOM: Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has revealed that both the Brackley and Brixworth teams are working rapidly to bring upgrades to the W14. He added that the team would “consistently” bring new parts and upgrades to the car over the coming races to close the Red Bull gap.

Currently sitting third in the Constructors’ standings, Mercedes are nine points behind Aston Martin and 67 points behind Red Bull.

Wolff trusts in his team to out-develop Red Bull over the year if they are to close the gap at the front.

In an interview with Mercedes’ official website, Wolff said that it is encouraging to see that the team understands the car much better after three races in car development.

He explains that Mercedes has a defined and clear direction in which they need to go and that he believes the team is on the right trajectory. Formula 1 is on a four-week “break” after the FIA cancelled the Chinese Grand Prix.

However, the scheduled restart in Azerbaijan on April 28 will kickstart a hectic run of ten races over 14 weeks as the season settles into a rhythm.

Wolff said Mercedes would gradually bring upgrades to the W14 as the races go on, with the Austrian admitting no “magic bullet” would help them match Red Bull’s pace immediately.

The team will consistently bring upgrades to the car over the next few races, which Wolff feels is something to look forward to.

He is realistic about Mercedes’ chance, saying no magic bullet will improve the car’s performance and hoping to see a steady improvement.

With three rounds under their belts, Mercedes lack pace compared to Red Bull, with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez taking all three wins between them in 2023.

Despite the gap, Wolff said he has identified where they need to change the car to improve its performance, having previously hinted at significant changes to the W14’s concept in the early rounds.

The busy schedule coming up for the teams includes a lot of racing to occur before the mid-season summer break starts at the end of July.

Why Churches in Malta Have Two Clocks: The History Behind a Unique Tradition

0

MALTA: If you have ever visited Malta, you might have noticed something peculiar about some of the churches on the island. Many have two clocks on their façades, one on each side of the main entrance. But even more intriguing, the clocks often show different times.

https://twitter.com/NameSearch_/status/1271986940636733440

Why is that? Is it a mistake, a prank, or a deliberate choice? Historians are still trying to determine this tradition’s origin, but several theories and legends attempt to explain it.

One of the most popular ones is that the clocks were to confuse the devil, who would try to lure people away from attending mass by making them think they were late or early.

By having two clocks at different times, the faithful would not rely on them and would instead follow the sound of the bells.

Another explanation is that the clocks indicated different schedules for different groups of people.

For example, one clock could show the time for the farmers, who would wake up early and work in the fields, while the other could show the time for the fishermen, who would follow the tides and the seasons.

Alternatively, one clock could show the local time, while the other could show the time of Rome, the seat of the Catholic Church.

A third possibility is that the clocks resulted from a practical problem. Since most clocks were operated manually and required regular winding and maintenance, it took work to keep them synchronized.

Moreover, the positioning of some clocks exposed them to different weather conditions and sunlight, which could affect their accuracy. Therefore, having two clocks at different times was a way of acknowledging and compensating for these errors.

According to local folklore, the clocks’ mismatched times are to ward off evil spirits. The story behind the two clocks dates back to the 18th century when a series of misfortunes struck the village in Malta.

Crop failures, epidemics, and unexplained deaths plagued the community, leading locals to believe their village was cursed.

They consulted with the village priest, who suggested they take an unconventional approach to dispel the evil spirits he believed were responsible for their misfortunes.

The priest advised that the villagers should install two clocks in the village square, with one clock set to the actual time and another set five minutes ahead.

He believed that the discrepancy in time would confuse the evil spirits, who would become disoriented and lose their grip on the village.

To their surprise, the locals followed the priest’s advice, and the misfortunes soon dissipated.

Since then, the clocks have become essential to the village’s identity and folklore.

Locals refer to them as the “clocks of confusion” and believe they continue to ward off evil spirits to this day.

The next time you visit one of these churches in Malta, take a moment to admire their clocks and wonder what stories they could tell.

Delhi Capitals Clinch Last-Over Thriller, Defeat Kolkata Knight Riders by 4 Wickets

0

INDIA: The Delhi Capitals finally secured their first win of the season after a wait of three weeks and six matches, thanks to a spirited bowling performance and a flying start from David Warner.

The Capitals faced Kolkata Knight Riders at their home ground, the Arun Jaitley Stadium, in front of a lively crowd. The game started an hour late due to rain, with the toss taking place at 8:15 PM IST and the match beginning at 8:30 PM IST.

The Delhi Capitals were off to a terrific start, picking up three wickets in the powerplay, with Litton Das, Venkatesh Iyer, and Nitish Rana falling early. Jason Roy, the other opener, remained cautious, and the Capitals continued to peg the KKR back with spin, with Axar Patel taking two wickets in quick succession, reducing Kolkata to 64-5.

KKR found themselves staring down the barrel at 96-9 before Andre Russell rescued the innings with a late surge that took the team to 127. However, the Kolkata Knight Rider’s terrific bowling performance, led by Nitish Rana, Anukul Roy, and Varun Chakravarthy, ensured that DC did not have an easy chase.

David Warner started the Capitals’ chase with aggression, hitting ten fours in the powerplay, but could not form partnerships as wickets fell regularly at the other end.

https://twitter.com/IPL/status/1649126132221104128

His wicket caused a mini-collapse, with the spinners piling up pressure on the batters, but a misfield from Andre Russell allowed the Capitals to get off the hook.

The KKR spinners took wickets regularly, reducing the Capitals to 111-6 before Axar Patel and Lalit Yadav eventually helped DC stumble over the line in the last over. The win, however, had an anticlimactic end, with Kulwant Kejroliya bowling a no-ball before conceding the remaining two runs in the free hit.

After securing their first win of the season, the Delhi Capitals will fly out to Hyderabad to face Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday (April 24). Meanwhile, the Kolkata Knight Riders will head home to the Eden Gardens to face Chennai Super Kings on Sunday (April 23).

Egyptians React to Netflix’s Docudrama Casting Queen Cleopatra as Black African

EGYPT: Egyptians have voiced their disapproval of Netflix’s new docudrama series “African Queens: Queen Cleopatra,” which depicts the famous Egyptian queen as a black African.

The show, which premiered last week, has ignited a fiery debate over Cleopatra’s race and heritage.

While the casting of British actress Adele James, who is of mixed race, has been lauded as a step forward in promoting diversity, many Egyptians have accused the show of trying to “erase the Egyptian identity” by depicting the queen as black.

The controversy has led to a formal complaint filed by a lawyer accusing the show of violating media laws.

The lawyer has called on the public prosecutor to take “necessary legal measures” and block access to Netflix’s services in Egypt.

Top archaeologist Zahi Hawass spearheads the show’s criticism and insists that Cleopatra was “light-skinned, not black.”

Historians say that Cleopatra’s mother’s identity is unknown and that there is a possibility of her or any other female ancestor being an indigenous Egyptian or from other African places.

Netflix has defended its decision to cast James, calling it a “nod to the centuries-long conversation about the ruler’s race.”

Executive producer and narrator Jada Pinkett Smith has also weighed in on the controversy, saying it is essential to tell stories about black queens.

This incident is not the first time that Cleopatra’s race has been a source of controversy.

Three years earlier, plans for a movie about the queen starring the Israeli actress Gal Gadot sparked a heated debate on social media. Some people insisted that the role should instead go to an Arab or African actress.

Gadot defended the casting decision, saying the team was looking for an actress with Macedonian roots who could fit Cleopatra.

The controversy surrounding “African Queens: Queen Cleopatra” highlights the sensitivity of race and identity in Egypt.

The country has a complex history, with various ethnicities and cultures, including ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and Arabs, shaping its identity.

As a result, discussions about race and identity in Egypt are often heated and complex.

The controversy also reflects a broader debate about representation in the media.

While some argue that casting a black actress as Cleopatra is essential to promoting diversity, others say that it erases the historical context of the queen’s life and reinforces harmful stereotypes about black people.

The debate will continue as long as people remain passionate about their identities and the stories that define them.

The Quantum Conundrum: The Measurement Problem Paradox

0

INDIA: Quantum mechanics, the branch of physics that describes the behaviour of particles at the subatomic level, is notoriously weird.

One of its most perplexing aspects is the measurement problem paradox, which has been puzzling physicists for nearly a century.

The measurement problem arises because, in quantum mechanics, particles only have a definite location or velocity once they are observed or measured.

Instead, they exist simultaneously in a “superposition” state in all possible locations or velocities.

Only when an observer observes their state “collapses” into a definite location or velocity.

This paradox means that the act of observation or measurement profoundly affects the behaviour of particles.

It raises the question of whether the act of measurement somehow creates reality or if reality exists independently of our observations.

One famous thought experiment that illustrates the measurement problem paradox is Schrödinger’s cat.

In this scenario, an observer places a cat in a box with a vial of poison that releases poison if a radioactive atom decays.

According to quantum mechanics, until the observer opens the box and observes the cat, it exists in a superposition state where it is alive and dead.

Only when the box is open and the cat observed, does its state collapse into a definite outcome. The measurement problem has been a topic of debate among physicists for decades.

Some scientists argue that measurement is inherently subjective and that separating the observer from the observed is impossible.

Others believe that an objective reality must exist independently of our observations. One proposed solution to the measurement problem is the many-worlds interpretation.

This theory suggests that when one makes a measurement, the universe splits into multiple parallel universes, each containing a different outcome.

In this interpretation, the cat in Schrödinger’s thought experiment would exist in both a universe where it was alive and a universe where it was dead. Still, the observer would only be aware of one of these outcomes.

Despite numerous attempts to resolve the measurement problem paradox, it remains one of the most perplexing and contentious issues in quantum mechanics.

It raises fundamental questions about the nature of reality and the role of observation in shaping it.

The measurement problem paradox has been so difficult to solve because it challenges our fundamental assumptions about the nature of reality.

Classical physics, which describes the behaviour of objects at the macroscopic level, assumes that things have a definite location and velocity at all times.

Quantum mechanics upends these assumptions, showing that particles exist in a state of indeterminacy at the subatomic level until one observes them.

As our understanding of quantum mechanics evolves, the measurement problem will remain debated and explored for years.

It highlights the weird and counterintuitive nature of the quantum world and challenges us to rethink our fundamental assumptions about the nature of reality.

The measurement problem paradox is one of quantum mechanics’ most puzzling and contentious issues.

It raises fundamental questions about the nature of reality and the role of observation in shaping it.

While scientists have proposed numerous theories to resolve the paradox, it remains an ongoing debate and exploration topic.

As we explore the weird and wonderful world of quantum mechanics, the measurement problem will continue challenging our understanding of the universe.

Jean Alesi Warns Ferrari against Trying to Poach Adrian Newey from Red Bull

0

FRANCE: Former Ferrari driver Jean Alesi has warned the Scuderia against trying to poach Adrian Newey, Red Bull’s chief technology officer, to fix their current issues.

Newey oversaw the development of last season’s dominant RB18 machine, and his signature would be one of the most sought-after in Formula 1.

However, Alesi warned that the time it would take to bring Newey through the door at Maranello would mean the team would only feel his impact for a while.

According to Alesi, Ferrari’s new team principal, Fred Vasseur, is the right person to help bring Ferrari forward and reach its former glory.

Alesi believes that the days of the team being able to hire high-profile designers behind the scenes, as was the case during Michael Schumacher’s dominant era, are behind them due to the clauses in all the contracts.

https://twitter.com/Cl16__FanpageFr/status/1648010536410333184?t=po6aTAsMtFMk1e0SWWUgCA&s=19

He said that if Ferrari acquired the services of Adrian Newey today, we wouldn’t see his car until 2025.

Ferrari has had a difficult start to the season by their high standards, failing to score any points in Australia after Carlos Sainz dropped out of the top 10 following his 5-second time penalty.

Alesi believes Scuderia Ferrari must prioritise three elements for what lies ahead: “reliability, performance, and stability.”

Despite questions over whether teams should favour one driver or not over the other and establish a clear hierarchy among the pair, Alesi thinks other issues need addressing at Maranello.

He explained that if, at a Grand Prix, Ferrari instructed Charles to be the first driver and told Carlos to be the second, it would not help develop the car, especially the lack of performance and reliability.

IPL 2023: Stoinis’ All-round Brilliance Leads LSG to 10-Run Win over RR

0

INDIA: Marcus Stoinis’ all-round performance led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to a 10-run victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur, helping them maintain their second spot on the points table.

LSG Vs RR

Stoinis scored 21 runs off just 16 balls and picked up two crucial wickets, playing a pivotal role in restricting Rajasthan Royals to 144 for 6, despite a solid opening partnership of 87 runs between Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

After being put into bat, Lucknow Super Giants struggled to get going early on in their inning, with Trent Boult’s tight lines putting the openers under immense pressure.

However, KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers managed to break free for a few overs, with Mayers hitting a couple of sixes, scoring 51 runs off 42 balls. A brief stumble followed, with Rajasthan Royals striking four times in 20 balls to reduce LSG to 104 for 4 in 14 overs.

However, Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran’s late blitz helped LSG post a competitive total of 154 for 7. In response, Rajasthan Royals started slowly, with Buttler and Jaiswal content to go slow early on.

However, Stoinis’ hard lengths and slower balls on a slow and low wicket proved effective, triggering a stumble in RR’s batting lineup, which looks strong on paper.

Despite Devdutt Padikkal’s late surge, Rajasthan Royals needed 19 runs in the final over, which proved to be too challenging, with Avesh Khan conceding just eight runs.

Stoinis was the match’s star, using his all-around skills to help LSG secure a crucial victory. The win puts LSG in a strong position on the points table and sends a message to their rivals that they are serious contenders for the title.

The match showcased some excellent individual performances, with Mayers scoring a half-century, Ashwin picking up two wickets, and Buttler and Jaiswal’s solid opening partnership.

However, it was Stoinis who stole the show with his match-winning efforts. The IPL 2023 season has been full of surprises and exciting moments, and this match was no exception.

With plenty of action still to come, fans can look forward to more thrilling encounters and outstanding performances from the world’s best cricketers.
