SpaceX Set to Launch 21 Starlink Satellites in Record-Breaking Mission

UNITED STATES: In the early hours of Saturday morning, the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is set to embark on its 75th orbital mission of 2023, carrying a payload of 21 Starlink internet satellites.

The launch is scheduled to take place from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base at 3:47 a.m. EDT, offering a spectacle for space enthusiasts and technology enthusiasts alike.

SpaceX enthusiasts can tune in to the webcast of the launch on X (formerly known as Twitter), where coverage will begin just five minutes before liftoff. If any delays occur, there are three backup opportunities available between 4:23 a.m. EDT and 6:00 a.m. EDT.

This mission holds additional significance, as it marks the 16th flight for the Falcon 9’s first stage, just one short of the company’s current reuse record, which was achieved last month.

After liftoff, the first stage is expected to return safely to Earth, touching down on the drone ship “Of Course I Still Love You” approximately 8.5 minutes after launch.

The 21 Starlink satellites aboard the Falcon 9 are slated to deploy from the rocket’s upper stage about 62.5 minutes after liftoff.

This addition will contribute to the expansion of the Starlink mega constellation, which currently boasts nearly 4,900 operational satellites and continues to grow rapidly, bringing global internet connectivity closer to reality.

SpaceX has been dedicated to expanding its Starlink network, with approximately 60% of its flights in 2023 devoted to this ambitious project.

The company has set ambitious goals for the near future, aiming for 100 flights by the end of this year and an even more impressive target of 144 in 2024.

As SpaceX continues to push the boundaries of space technology, this mission underscores its commitment to delivering high-speed internet access to underserved and remote areas around the world, making the internet more accessible to everyone, regardless of their geographic location.

Uncertain Future for Sergio Perez as Ex-F1 Racer Warns of Contract Vulnerability

0

UNITED STATES: As Sergio Perez navigates a turbulent season with Red Bull Racing, former Formula 1 driver Jan Lammers has issued a stark warning regarding the fragility of contracts in the face of underperformance. While Perez holds a Red Bull contract for the 2024 F1 season, Lammers contends that contracts can quickly unravel when a driver’s performance falters, a situation he believes Perez currently finds himself in.

The 2023 season commenced on a high note for Sergio Perez, who clinched two Grand Prix victories in the initial four rounds, fueling aspirations of mounting a title challenge against teammate Max Verstappen, who secured the remaining two wins. However, Perez’s momentum took a nosedive from there.

With Verstappen surging ahead to secure his third World Championship title after a P2 finish in the Qatar sprint, Perez’s resurgence ground to a halt, leaving him in a precarious position.

Despite persistent speculations, Red Bull’s principal, Christian Horner, has steadfastly dismissed rumours of Sergio Perez’s premature departure from the team. Lammers, however, argue that a contract is no guarantee of stability when a driver fails to deliver on the track.

“Where there is no performance, contracts fall apart,” Lammers cautioned in an interview. “Perez has to perform well; otherwise, his seat will come under pressure. That’s more than justified.”

The looming question now is whether Red Bull will opt to replace Sergio Perez, and if so, with whom? Names in contention include Daniel Ricciardo, who could make a return to the Red Bull fold, and young talent Liam Lawson, who impressed during his stint at junior team AlphaTauri

Lawson’s remarkable performance has put him on the radar, raising questions about whether Red Bull might face competition to retain him. Lammers remains optimistic, asserting that Red Bull likely has Lawson under a “watertight” contract. “Red Bull has all the means to keep their pupils safe,” he affirmed.

As Daniel Ricciardo prepares to re-enter the fray with AlphaTauri at the upcoming United States Grand Prix, all eyes will be on Verstappen, who aims to replicate his exceptional 2023 performance with a potential 15th victory. The uncertainty surrounding Sergio Perez’s future casts a shadow over Red Bull’s lineup for the 2024 season.

NASA’s JWST Reveals Supersonic Jet Stream Surging across Jupiter

UNITED STATES: NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), hailed for its ability to unveil the mysteries of the universe, has unexpectedly provided stunning insights into our very own solar system. Equipped with the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and an array of infrared instruments, JWST has offered unprecedented views of our planetary neighbours, including a poignant glimpse of Neptune’s rings after three decades.

Yet the most recent revelation comes from the gas giant Jupiter. In images captured in 2022, researchers identified a colossal high-speed jet stream spanning over 3,000 miles and hurtling at a staggering 320 mph. This discovery, made possible by JWST’s NIRCam, has left scientists astonished.

Lead author Ricardo Hueso of the University of the Basque Country expressed his surprise, saying, “That totally surprised us.” Leigh Fletcher of the University of Leicester echoed the sentiment, emphasizing how, despite years of observation, there is still much to learn about Jupiter’s dynamic atmosphere.

This newfound jet stream, barreling at double the speed of a Category 5 hurricane on Earth, holds the potential to unveil the mysteries of Jupiter’s turbulent climate. By scrutinizing the images captured in 2022, scientists hope to gain deeper insights into the workings of the gas giant’s atmosphere.

Jupiter, renowned for its extreme weather, boasts the iconic Great Red Spot, a colossal storm visible even from Earth. The planet’s layered atmosphere, akin to Earth’s, likely plays a pivotal role in its tumultuous climate.

To further illuminate the dynamics of Jupiter’s atmosphere, researchers plan to compare JWST’s infrared observations with data from the Hubble Space Telescope, which has already provided valuable insights into the region around Jupiter’s equator.

This comparative analysis promises a comprehensive understanding of the planet’s enigmatic winds. As JWST continues to unveil the secrets of our solar system, scientists anticipate even more groundbreaking revelations in the years to come.

Martin Dominates Friday Practice in Australia, Leaving Title Rival Bagnaia Trailing

0

AUSTRALIA: Jorge Martin asserted his dominance during Friday morning’s practice session at the Australian Grand Prix. The Spanish rider, who currently trails title rival Francesco Bagnaia by 18 points after a recent setback in Indonesia, set the pace with a blistering lap time of 1m29.039s.

Martin’s performance was nothing short of exceptional, as he became the first rider to break the 90-second barrier, clocking in at 1m29.882s. This time, it held firm until the dying moments of the session.

Maverick Vinales of Aprilia briefly challenged Martin’s lead, clocking an impressive 1m29.777s with only three minutes remaining. However, Martin responded with lightning speed, lowering his best to 1m29.266s and then ultimately to 1m29.039s, establishing a staggering seven-tenths-of-a-second lead over the field.

Tech3 Gas rookie Augusto Fernandez emerged as a surprise contender, securing the third position with a late surge that edged out Vinales by a mere 0.018 seconds. Behind them, Brad Binder piloted his KTM to fourth place with a time of 1m30.285s, while Martin’s Pramac teammate Johann Zarco closely followed in fifth, achieving a best effort of 1m30.311s.

The satellite Ducati riders, Marco Bezzecchi and Alex Marquez, demonstrated remarkable synchronicity, posting identical times of 1m30.434s to secure sixth and seventh place, with Bezzecchi claiming the higher position due to setting his time earlier. Local hero Jack Miller of KTM finished in eighth.

Enea Bastianini, the best of the factory Ducatis, took the ninth spot in only his second weekend back from an extended absence, while championship leader Francesco Bagnaia faced a subdued session, finishing in 11th place after a braking mishap.

Notably, Honda rider Marc Marquez showcased his prowess early on but suffered a low-side crash at the MG right-hander, leaving him in 12th place, 1.5 seconds behind the leading Martin. LCR Honda’s Alex Rins experienced his setback with a crash at Siberia Corner, concluding the session in 14th place.

In a surprising turn, Yamaha duo Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli struggled, landing in 18th and 19th positions, respectively, nearly two seconds off the leading pace. Meanwhile, Joan Mir, riding his Honda, found himself in 20th place, facing an uphill battle in the upcoming sessions.

Netflix’s Summer Surge: Cracks Down on Password Sharing, Rakes in Record Subscribers

0

UNITED STATES: Netflix, the global streaming giant, has reported a remarkable surge in subscribers during the summer months, outpacing industry expectations. This surge, seen as a result of the company’s efforts to curb password sharing, has successfully converted freeloaders into paying customers.

In a bid to further boost revenue, Netflix has announced an increase in the pricing of its premium services. The highest-tier streaming plan will see a $2 hike to $23 per month in the U.S., marking a 10% increase.

Additionally, the lowest-priced ad-free plan will be raised by $2 to $12. The $15.50 per month cost for the most popular U.S. streaming option will remain unchanged, as will the $7 monthly plan, which includes intermittent commercials. Similar price adjustments have been made for subscribers in the U.K. and France.

During the July–September period, the company added a staggering 8.8 million subscribers globally, more than triple the number gained in the same period last year. This boost has propelled Netflix to approximately 247 million subscribers worldwide, surpassing the projected 243.8 million by analysts.

Financially, Netflix has exceeded analyst forecasts, with earnings of $1.68 billion, or $3.73 per share, reflecting a 20% increase from the previous year. Revenue also saw an 8% climb to $8.54 billion.

In response to these impressive quarterly results, Netflix’s stock price surged by over 12% in extended trading. The company’s shares have experienced a 30% increase this year, showcasing its resilience in a competitive streaming landscape.

Despite ongoing labour disputes in the entertainment industry, Netflix’s subscriber base has grown by over 16 million in the first nine months of the year, surpassing the 8.9 million added in the entirety of the previous year. This expansion comes despite challenges faced due to the pandemic.

Netflix’s decision to clamp down on password sharing has proven highly effective in converting viewers into paying subscribers. Co-CEO Greg Peters expressed satisfaction with this strategy, anticipating continued gains in the coming quarters. Looking ahead, Netflix plans to invest approximately $17 billion in TV series and films next year, aiming to rebuild its library of original programming.

Additionally, the introduction of a low-priced option with advertising initiated a year ago is expected to play a significant role in revenue generation. Analysts suggest that the personalized data gathered from viewers’ preferences will allow for precise targeting of commercials, potentially rivalling advertising giants like Google and Facebook.

With approximately 30% of new subscribers opting for the $7 plan with commercials, Netflix is poised to attract more advertisers. The increased prices for premium plans may also redirect subscribers towards the ad-supported option.

Scott Purdy, U.S. media leader for KPMG, noted, “The ‘streamflation’ era is upon us, and consumers should expect to be hit with price hikes, password sharing limits, and enticed with ad-supported options.”

Haas Unveils Game-Changing “Red Bull Concept” Car, Eyes Strong Comeback in 2024

0

UNITED STATES: Haas F1 Team has introduced a B-spec car at the United States Grand Prix, signalling a strategic shift towards a revolutionary “Red Bull concept” to propel them forward in the 2024 season. With just 12 points accrued this year and the highest finish in P7, the team recognized that the initial iteration of the VF-23 lacked the competitive edge needed.

The decision was made under the stewardship of team principal Guenther Steiner, opting to forego minor adjustments in favour of a comprehensive overhaul. This eagerly awaited upgrade focuses primarily on aerodynamics, with significant modifications including the floor, engine cover, sidepod inlet, sidepods, quarter panel, and padding gills.

Haas’ departure from the early-season Ferrari model in favour of the Red Bull downwash concept marks a pivotal shift in strategy. Team boss Steiner emphasized, “Creating more downforce and less drag, it just wasn’t there anymore, so we needed to change the concept to what is commonly known as the “Red Bull concept” or the “downwash concept”.”

While the team currently languishes in ninth place in the Constructors’ Championship, Kevin Magnussen remains cautiously optimistic about the immediate impact of the upgrades. He acknowledges, however, that the Austin improvements are equally geared towards refining the 2024 contender.

Teammate Nico Hulkenberg echoes this sentiment, expressing anticipation for the revised car, which aims to rectify performance disparities, enhance consistency, and address tyre wear issues.

Nico hopes the updates will help improve the car’s tyre wear, consistency, and overall performance. As the Haas team gears up for a crucial phase of development, eyes are now fixed on the United States Grand Prix to witness the potential breakthrough that could redefine their trajectory in Formula 1.

NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Unveils Groundbreaking ‘Kennedy Entry Experience’

UNITED STATES: Guests arriving at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center can now see a space shuttle launch, a SpaceX Starship land on the moon, and, just a few seconds later, astronauts walk on the surface of Mars, all before they pass through the turnstiles to enter.

Officials at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex unveiled the “Kennedy Entry Experience,” a 3,000-square-foot (280-square-metre) video wall that offers a first look at the history and future that await guests inside.

The new six-minute spectacular takes viewers on a journey through the first 60 years of the U.S. space program, from the early days of the space race to modern-day operations on the International Space Station. The presentation then goes beyond, into the near future, when commercial spaceflight companies and NASA plan to lead the way back to the moon and then onwards to Mars.

The display, which uses attention-grabbing technology to make images appear to launch off the screen, is narrated by the late President John F. Kennedy, whose speech takes on new meaning when paired with imagery of NASA’s present and future activities in space, rather than the Apollo era for which it was written.

The Kennedy Entry Experience takes the place of a 75-foot-long (23-metre) blue granite fountain, which features the likeness and a quote from Kennedy, the centre’s namesake. Guests can still see the former tribute to the president, but now as part of the opening scene projected by the towering video installation.

Like the fountain before it, the Kennedy Entry Experience stands next to a large 3D sculpture of NASA’s insignia, which has become a popular photo backdrop and is adjacent to where guests enter the complex.

The wall is sponsored by SNA Displays, which has created large digital signs for New York City’s Times Square and at sports and entertainment venues across the country. The animation was created by the New York-based multimedia tech and design studio Blunt Action.

In addition to playing the six-minute show multiple times a day, the digital wall is capable of wayfinding and event advertising and is integrated into the complex’s emergency system to alert guests to inclement weather. The display can also support live-input video.

Red Bull Denies Power Struggle amidst Rumors of Marko’s Exit

0

AUSTRIA: In a year of denials coming out of Red Bull, most relating to Sergio Perez, it’s now Helmut Marko’s turn to rubbish reports that he could get the boot in what is being billed as a power struggle at Red Bull. Amid swirling speculations, Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, dismisses claims of an imminent crisis.

Reports of internal tensions between Marko and Christian Horner, exacerbated by remarks about Sergio Perez, have fueled rumours of a rift. The alleged power struggle also involves Horner’s increased influence at AlphaTauri.

A notable media publication, suggests a crisis meeting looms this week, with Marko’s position potentially at stake. It is asserted that key figures within Red Bull, including sporting CEO Oliver Mintzlaff and Horner, may be pushing for Marko’s departure, especially following the passing of Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, seen as Marko’s staunchest supporter.

In response, Marko vehemently denies the existence of any impending summit or crunch talks. “I have a contract until the end of next year. When and how I stop, when it’s over, I decide and not, for example, Horner,” he asserts. However, he concedes that a reconfiguration of power dynamics is underway within the organization.

The discord extends beyond Marko and Horner, with disagreements over the future of Yuki Tsunoda adding to the friction. Despite Tsunoda’s confirmation as a 2024 AlphaTauri driver, rumours persist of Horner’s preference for Liam Lawson.

Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher underscores Marko’s influence, pointing to Max Verstappen’s unwavering support. Schumacher warns Horner against applying further pressure, emphasizing the significant bond between Marko and Verstappen.

Marko expresses gratitude for Verstappen’s loyalty, underscoring their special connection since Verstappen’s early teens. As the saga unfolds, all eyes turn to the upcoming race in Austin, where Verstappen aims for his 50th Grand Prix victory.
