NASA Engineers Perform Remote Surgery on Voyager Probes, Extending Their Interstellar Mission

UNITED STATES: In a testament to NASA’s enduring mission of exploration, the legendary Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes, which embarked on their epic space journey 46 years ago, are receiving critical updates from Earth to prolong their remarkable voyages.

These updates include a much-needed software fix to address the corrupted data transmission issues that Voyager 1 encountered last year and a strategy to prevent residue buildup in the spacecraft’s thrusters.

Voyager 1 had engineers scratching their heads when it began transmitting “gobbledygook” from its attitude articulation and control system (AACS) in May 2022. Investigation revealed that the AACS hardware was in perfect working condition, but it had somehow routed telemetry data through a defunct onboard computer, leading to data corruption.

NASA’s adept engineers swiftly devised a software patch to resolve the issue, and Voyager 2 received the update on October 20. While the mystery behind the initial diversion remains, confidence is high that this software patch will restore proper data transmission once it completes its journey to Voyager 1.

Meanwhile, the Voyager probes face a different challenge: the accumulation of residue in their thrusters’ inlet tubes, potentially obstructing vital functions. To combat this, engineers have initiated manoeuvres to reduce the frequency of thruster firings. If successful, this strategy should extend the probes’ operational life by at least five more years.

Linda Spilker, project scientist for the Voyager mission at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, emphasized the creativity of the engineering team in overcoming the unforeseen challenges they continue to encounter. She stated, “This far into the mission, the engineering team is being faced with a lot of challenges for which we just don’t have a playbook. But they continue to come up with creative solutions.”

The updates highlight NASA’s dedication to extracting every last bit of knowledge and discovery from these iconic spacecraft, ensuring that Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 will remain in contact with Earth for as long as possible as they venture deeper into the cosmos.

The news broke when F1 broadcaster and UK local councillor Sam Collins shared the unexpected development on social media, stating, “Red Bull wind tunnel set back. Things are not going to plan for Red Bull’s new wind tunnel in Milton Keynes, UK.”

While the reasons for this withdrawal remain undisclosed, it has been revealed that Red Bull is shifting the wind tunnel’s location to a site closer to their campus. This strategic move necessitates the abandonment of the initial planning permission and the submission of a new application.

The new plans will neither affect the project’s costs nor its timeline. Red Bull remains resolute in its aim to have the new wind tunnel up and running in time to support the development of the 2026 F1 car, which will adhere to the latest aerodynamic regulations.

“Everything is on track,” affirmed a source from Red Bull. The wind tunnel project represents one of the last major decisions made by Red Bull’s founder, Dietrich Mateschitz, before his passing in October 2022.

The shift in location could potentially lead to an improved setup for Red Bull, despite the temporary setback. The team will continue using its ageing 75-year-old wind tunnel at Twinwoods, UK, while they navigate the planning process for their cutting-edge facility.

During a solemn ceremony held at St. Paul’s Church in Frankfurt, Rushdie spoke passionately about the current era, describing it as a time when the fundamental right to express oneself is besieged from all sides. He highlighted the critical importance of safeguarding this freedom for the betterment of society.

In a shocking incident in August 2022, Rushdie was viciously attacked while on stage at a literary festival in New York state. The brutal assault left him blind in one eye and with severe damage to his left hand. 

In response, Rushdie has channelled his experience into a memoir titled “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder,” set to be released on April 16. He regards this work as a powerful response to violence, choosing to counter it with the beauty of art.

The Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, endowed with 25,000 euros ($26,500), has been a symbol of literary recognition since 1950. The German jury, in its announcement earlier this year, commended Rushdie for his unwavering spirit, his optimistic outlook on life, and his profound contribution to the world of storytelling.

Rushdie’s literary journey has been marked by adversity, stemming from the condemnation by Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of passages in Rushdie’s 1988 novel “The Satanic Verses” as blasphemous.

Bauer reported, “The skids located in the area -825 ≥ XR ≥ – 1025 are found to be not in compliance with Article 3.5.9 e) of the 2023 Formula One Technical Regulations.”

The technical directive that was found to be violated pertained to the thickness of the plank assembly, as defined in Article 3.5.9. (e), which mandates a measurement of 10mm ± 0.2mm when new. A minimum thickness of 9mm is allowable due to wear, with compliance checked at the peripheries of designated holes.

Representatives from both Mercedes and Ferrari presented their arguments, leading to a 90-minute deliberation by the stewards before the verdict of disqualification was reached.

As a result, Lando Norris advanced to second place, followed by Carlos Sainz who claimed third. More significantly for the championship, Sergio Perez’s ascent to a net P4 widened his lead over Hamilton to 39 points, with four races remaining in the season.

The controversy raised questions about the Circuit of The Americas’ tarmac quality, which drivers criticized for its excessive bumpiness. Max Verstappen voiced his concerns about the Austin track that he loves and felt that the layout is amazing. However, he added that the track needs a new tarmac and it needs to be a lot smoother for the future.

Hamilton concurred, acknowledging the need for improvements. He suggested that selective patching could be a cost-effective solution, emphasizing the need for a smoother racing surface.

The first tier offers users a lower-cost subscription with access to all features but retains ad displays. The second, pricier option provides an ad-free experience for subscribers. 

While specific details about the subscription plans were not divulged, a recent test case in New Zealand and the Philippines imposed restrictions on non-subscribers, limiting them to “read-only” actions such as viewing posts, watching videos, and following accounts.

This initiative, dubbed the “Not a Bot” subscription model, aims to combat spam, manipulation, and bot activity on the platform. Musk acknowledges that the platform’s revenue has suffered, attributing this to pressure from activists on advertisers.

Similar to other major tech platforms, such as YouTube and Netflix, X is exploring a hybrid approach, offering both ad-supported and subscription-based models.

While YouTube shares a portion of its subscription revenue with content creators, it remains undisclosed whether content creators on X will be compensated in the ad-free subscription models.

Musk previously introduced the blue check subscription service at $8 per month, along with discounted advertising rates for companies. However, criticisms over lax content moderation led to advertisers becoming apprehensive about their ads appearing alongside inappropriate content.

Recent scrutiny of X by the European Commission underscores the challenges faced by the platform. The investigation aims to assess its compliance with new tech regulations concerning illegal and harmful content, particularly in the wake of disinformation surrounding Hamas’ attack on Israel.

AUSTRALIA: In response to impending adverse weather conditions, race organizers Dorna have announced significant adjustments to the schedule for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Following Saturday morning’s MotoGP qualifying session, start times for all three classes have been moved up by an hour, aiming to dodge the worst of the predicted rain and high winds set to hit Phillip Island.

The highly anticipated MotoGP sprint race, originally slated for 2 p.m. local time, will now kick off at 1 p.m., ensuring the safety of riders and the smooth progression of the event.

With gusts of up to 80 km/h (50 mph) in the forecast, these precautionary measures are crucial to maintain competitive yet secure racing conditions.

In addition, 10-minute warm-up sessions have been reintroduced for both Moto2 and Moto3, enabling riders to acclimate themselves to the prevailing conditions at full racing speeds. This strategic adaptation comes after the omission of warm-ups for these classes from the 2023 schedule.

The Moto3 warm-up session is scheduled for 8 am, followed by Moto2 at 8:20 am, and MotoGP at 8:40 am. This proactive approach aims to equip riders with the necessary preparation to navigate the challenging weather.

The revised schedule now features the Moto3 race commencing at 10 am, followed by Moto2 at 11:15 am, and the MotoGP sprint race at 1 pm, with the main race shifted to Saturday at 3:10 pm.

A statement from Dorna emphasized that these changes were implemented “to avoid the worst of the weather which is forecast to arrive at some time after 2 pm”.

These alterations ensure that a substantial 25 points will be at stake at Phillip Island, even if the sprint race, awarding 12 points for a win, cannot be held on Sunday.

These timely adjustments underscore the commitment of organizers to prioritize the safety and integrity of the race, ensuring a thrilling yet secure spectacle for both participants and fans alike.
