UNITED STATES: Due to its long-standing opposition to same-sex marriage, Chick-fil-A has long been a favourite of conservatives. However, after announcing the hiring of an executive in charge of diversity, equity, and inclusion, the chicken sandwich giant is now drawing demands for a boycott.

Conservatives on Twitter have been outraged by the Atlanta-based corporation’s announcement that it had named Erick McReynolds to the position of vice president of DEI. In November 2021, McReynolds—who has worked with Chick-fil-A since 2007—was given a promotion to the new role.

Conservatives have criticised corporate America for embracing DEI, which aims to diversify workforces, as it constitutes racial and gender discrimination. Recent LGBTQ scandals have drawn attention to other corporate actors.

Joey Mannarino, a conservative strategist, asked his 166,000 followers if a boycott is necessary. A poll showed that 52.4% of voters were opposed to a boycott, while a little over 47% of respondents voted in favour of a boycott.

Mannarino provided a link to a Chick-fil-A website page titled “Committed to being Better at Together”. The company states that they are an equal opportunity employer that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. They remain committed to upholding hostile-free work cultures and utilise non-discriminatory hiring practices.

They emphasise that they can find new ways to strengthen the quality of care they deliver when they combine their distinctive backgrounds and experiences with a culture of belonging.

Chick-Fil-A has made an effort to tone down its politics in recent years in order to attract new customers and supporters. In 2019, the company ended its funding of anti-same-sex marriage organisations, which had been a source of controversy.

On the company’s website, McReynolds stated that they are committed to ensuring mutual respect, understanding, and dignity everywhere they do business.

However, some angry Twitter users expressed their dissatisfaction with the company’s Christian values and announced that they would stop eating Chick-Fil-A as of right now. In recent years, Chick-Fil-A has made an effort to tone down its politics in order to attract new customers and supporters.
