UNITED STATES: Out of nowhere, Warner Bros. surprised the DC fans with the announcement of a John Constantine movie. The upcoming film will serve as a sequel to Constantine (2005) and will mark the return of Keanu Reeves as the famed DC anti-hero.

In addition to the sequel announcement, Warner Bros. also revealed major members joining the team. Besides Reeves’ reprising the role, filmmaker Francis Lawrence is also set to return as the director for the upcoming sequel.

John Constantine is a popular DC anti-hero who is a sorcerer and demon hunter. The character debuted in Swamp Thing #37, released in 1982 and finally got its own comic book in 1988. Since his arrival, the anti-hero persona became widely popular among fans due to his immense magical power, dry humour, and heavy chain-smoking habit.

Following the comic book’s popularity, John Constantine received the first live-action film titled Constantine (2005), starring Keanu Reeves as the major protagonist. The 2005 feature also starred Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton, Djimon Hounsou, and Shia LaBeouf in the major roles. The movie bagged mixed reviews from the critics, but audiences praised the feature for its horror elements.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. is planning to bring John Constantine to the live-action format for the second time. The upcoming sequel will mark the return of Keanu Reeves and filmmaker Francis Lawrence. Akiva Goldsman will bankroll the movie in addition to providing the screenplay. J.J. Abrams will produce the sequel along with Hannah Minghella under the banner of Bad Robot.

In addition to the major team member’s arrival, the makers have not revealed more information on the plot, release date, or other characters appearing in the sequel.

Besides the film’s live-action version, John Constantine also bagged a television series adaptation. NBC’s series debuted in 2014, starring Matt Ryan as Constantine. The show aired for only a single season, including thirteen episodes.

This year saw the postponement or cancellation of the upcoming DC films. The sequel news came as a complete surprise to DC fans at the time. Given the return of Keanu Reeves and Francis Lawrence, the sequel sends a wave of excitement among fans.
