MALAYSIA: Three weeks into his 12-year sentence for corruption, the daughter of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak demanded on Monday that her father receive “proper” medical attention while inside.

In a case related to a multibillion-dollar scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad, Malaysia’s top court dismissed Najib’s petition to overturn his conviction on fraud and money laundering allegations on August 23.

The 69-year-old Najib has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and requested a royal pardon. He has also been fined close to $50 million. He is still facing trial in four additional cases, each carrying significant financial fines and jail time.

Najib was brought to a hospital in Kuala Lumpur for what a staff member characterized as standard medical examinations. However, he was still able to make it to a court hearing the following day.

Nooryana Najwa, his daughter, claimed in a social media post on Monday that when physicians examined Najib again on September 10, they changed his medication and sent him back to the jail compound.

Nooryana pleaded, “On humanitarian grounds, our family pleads with the prison authority, the hospital and government to do the right thing and allow dad to receive proper medical care and observation.”

Najib was admitted as an elective patient to ensure his good health, according to the director-general of the health ministry, Noor Hisham Abdullah. There, doctors met twice with Najib and his family to review the test results.
