India Shines at Asian Games 2023 with Record Medal Tally

India’s medal tally for this edition of the Asian Games is already at an all-time high with 21 gold medals, 32 silver medals, and 33 bronze medals

CHINA: Day 12 of the ongoing Asian Games 2023 took place in China on Thursday, and the compound women’s team archery final saw India defeat Chinese Taipei 230-229 to take gold. India prevailed in a dramatic match thanks to the strong performances of its Indian archers, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Gopichand Swami, and Parneet Kaur. In the men’s compound archery team final, India also won the gold medal. 

In the meantime, the mixed doubles squash team of Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Singh took home the gold. Prior to it, India suffered a severe defeat when PV Sindhu, a superstar in the women’s singles competition, lost in the quarterfinals. In a match that ended up being quite one-sided, the Indian shuttler was defeated by He Bingjiao of China in straight games (16-21, 12-21).

But HS Prannoy came through for India by triumphing in his quarterfinal round, which advanced him to the semifinal and guaranteed him a medal. The women’s hockey semifinal between India and China ended in a 0-4 loss for India, who will now compete for the bronze medal.

Prior to wrestler Antim winning the women’s freestyle 53kg bout, seasoned Saurav Ghosal earned a silver medal in the men’s singles squash final event. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the men’s doubles quarterfinal with ease to secure at least a bronze medal for India in the final event of Day 12 of the competition.

India has already broken its previous best total of 70 medals in the previous edition of the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018. India would love to cross the total of 100 medals to make it a historic run for India in the history of the Asian Games.
