Iran Along With Nine African Countries Lose UNGA Voting Rights

UNITED STATES. New York: The United Nations has said that nine African countries will lose their UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) voting rights for failure to pay their financial contributions as stipulated under the UN charter.
According to a letter signed by the President of the General Assembly Volkan Bozkov ten member states including Iran and nine other countries from Africa will risk losing their voting rights.

The countries losing UNGA voting rights

Somalia is leading the African countries that are most likely to lose their voting rights with due of $1,443,640 to settle. Along with Somalia, Comoros ($871,632) , Sao Tome and Principe ($829,881), Libya ($705,391), Congo ($90,844), Zimbabwe ($81,770), Central African Republic ($29,395), South Sudan ($22,804) and Niger ($6,732).

Apart from the African countries, Iran has arrears of around $16,251,298.

According to Article 19 of the UN charter, “A member state in arrears in the payment of its dues in an amount that equals or exceeds the contribution due for two preceding years loses a right to vote in the general assembly.”
However, an exception is made if a country is financially incapable of paying the dues.
