INDIA: In the presence of party chief Akhilesh Yadav, senior Congress politician Kapil Sibal filed his nomination for Rajya Sabha from the Samajwadi Party at the party headquarters in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. As a prominent counsel, Sibal is known to have close relations with the Yadav family. Sibal contended in the Election Commission in January 2017 (during the Yadav family strife) that Akhilesh Yadav should be given the ‘Bicycle’ symbol. Akhilesh ultimately received the symbol.
Kapil Sibal told reporters after submitting his nomination that he resigned from Congress on May 16. “I’ve announced my resignation from Congress.” We want to form an alliance while remaining in opposition. He remarked, “I shall be with the Samajwadi Party and point out the flaws in the Modi government.”
Akhilesh Yadav announced to the media minutes later that Kapil Sibal had filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha with the support of the Samajwadi Party.
“Sibal is a well-known lawyer who has also pursued a political career. He skillfully presented and addressed key subjects in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. The country faces many challenges, and I am hopeful that he would properly bring these problems before the Rajya Sabha,” Yadav added.
Sibal was elected from Uttar Pradesh with the backing of the Samajwadi Party in his last term. Many SP leaders, notably Akhilesh Yadav and Azam Khan, have a good relationship with Sibal, who will finish his tenure in the Rajya Sabha in July.
After two years in prison, Sibal defended SP leader Azam Khan in the Supreme Court and helped him secure interim bail. In 2017, when the Yadavs were embroiled in a bitter family fight, he helped Akhilesh Yadav keep his party’s bicycle symbol.
In return for Sibal’s legal assistance, the Samajwadi Party has aided the former Congress leader to keep his Rajya Sabha seat. On the other hand, Akhilesh Yadav and Kapil Sibal have stated that they have not joined the Samajwadi Party.
