UNITED STATES: Kim Kardashian, an American socialite, and entrepreneur, is now officially single. A Los Angeles judge granted Kim Kardashian’s request to be declared legally single after more than a year of filing divorce from American rapper Kanye West, who now goes by Ye.
According to Billboard, the hearing was held on Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court (March 2). Judge Steven Cochran granted the reality star’s request to divide her divorce from West into two parts, effectively ending their marriage immediately while deferring more complex issues such as assets and custody to future proceedings. “The Court grants termination of marital status,” the judge wrote in a written order issued following a public hearing.
Kanye West, who did not attend the hearing, was represented by well-known Hollywood family attorney Samantha Spector. The KUWTK (Keeping Up With The Kardashians) star appeared at the hearing via live video conference and described Hollywood’s prominent divorce lawyer Laura Wasser.
According to reports, Kanye West’s attorneys sought three conditions before ruling. The judge granted one request regarding what happens if either star dies before the divorce case is finalized but denied two others, including restrictions on what would happen if Kardashian remarried quickly. Both parties initially claimed that the split was amicable. Still, the estranged couple’s relationship has grown increasingly strained in the year since, as both have begun public romances with new partners.
During the hearing, Judge Cochran asked the fashion mogul if problems, differences, and disagreements contributed to the dissolution of her marriage with Kanye West. He then requested Kim Kardashian if she wanted to be a single person. Kardashian responds with a simple “yes,” and the judge declares, “It is granted,” after which the reality television star officially drops the ‘West’ from her name.
Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kanye West a year ago in February 2021, citing irreconcilable differences. North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm are the former couple’s four children, whom they married in May 2014. Kim Kardashian is currently dating Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson, while Kanye West is dating actress Julia Fox.
