UNITED STATES: CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday that Meta Platforms Inc. is the newest firm to enter the AI race and that the company is introducing a new large language model based on artificial intelligence (AI) that is targeted at the research community.
With the release of Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT late last year, the competition to rule the AI technology area, which had previously been more in the background, began. This drove tech giants from Alphabet Inc. to China’s Baidu Inc. to develop their own products.
According to Zuckerberg, large language model AI (LLaMA) has shown potential in producing text and conversations, summarising written material, and carrying out difficult tasks like deducing protein structures or resolving mathematical problems.
“The community of AI researchers will have access to Meta’s model,” he continued. The tech sector’s slowing development has resulted in several layoffs and a reduction in experimental ventures, but AI has emerged as a promising area for investment.
As LLaMA will come in different sizes, Meta characterised their AI as having a “smaller foundation model” and requiring “much less computational power and resources” than previous large language models.
While emphasising its dedication to openness and responsible AI development, the corporation reaffirmed that only AI researchers would be granted access.
LLAMA is not the same as Bing or ChatGPT. It is not a chatbot that can be interacted with by anybody to ask questions or issue commands. Instead, Meta claims that it is a research tool that it is distributing with the intention of “democratising access to this essential, rapidly evolving subject.”
