UKRAINE: In the hours leading up to a Nato conference intended to address security threats from Moscow, Russia has launched an airstrike on Kyiv, according to Ukraine. As per Kyiv, in the early hours of Tuesday, Ukraine’s air defence system shot down every drone that Russia had deployed before it reached its targets.

In a post on the social networking site Telegram, Serhiy Popko, the chief of Ukraine’s military administration, claimed that “the enemy attacked Kyiv from the air for the second time this month.”

No immediate information was available regarding casualties or damage. The air force of Ukraine claims that for an hour and longer in other eastern regions of the country, air raid alerts were transmitted over the capital city.

Witnesses in Kyiv reportedly heard explosions that sounded like air defence systems intercepting targets during the air strike. It happens at a time when the Nato summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, which begins on Tuesday and is being attended by Rishi Sunak, Joe Biden, and other alliance leaders, is anticipated to be dominated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Countries are anticipated to debate measures to put the military alliance on the path to fending off upcoming threats, as well as how to support Kyiv further in its counter-offensive. The faster road for Ukraine to join Nato, which member states have reportedly approved, will be one of the subjects to be discussed, according to the Ukrainian foreign minister on Monday.

Ukraine’s future participation in Nato would be faced with a “clear and firm” response, according to a statement from Russia criticising the alliance and its dominant member, the United States, for their support of Ukraine.

Thousands of people have been dead, millions have been displaced, and numerous cities in eastern and southern Ukraine are now nothing but wreckage as a result of Russia’s invasion of its neighbour, which is now on its 503rd day and shows no signs of ending.
