NIGERIA. Ghana. Burkina Faso: The West African Football Union (WAFU) B U-17 tournament, which was held in Cape Coast, Ghana, and Niger from June 11 to June 24, was won by the Nigeria Golden Eagle.
The Golden Eaglet, who overcame the Junior Elephants of Burkina Faso 2 goals to 1 on Friday in Cape Coast, also defeated Cote d’Ivoire 3-1, and Burkina Faso defeated host Ghana 1-0 in the competition’s semifinal.
The regional competition functioned as a qualification process for Algeria’s hosting of the TotalEnergies Africa U17 Championship the following year. The competition will choose Africa’s representatives at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Peru the following year.
Burkina Faso’s lone goal came 42 minutes before the end of the first half, but Abubakar Abdullahi’s brace helped the Nigerian squad win the trophy.
The Nigerian team put their house in order early in the second half by scoring the game-winning goal in the 48th minute on Emmanuel Michael’s free kick thanks to Abubakar.
In contrast, Emmanuel Micheal, a teammate of Richard Odoh’s from Nigeria, won player of the match for the matches against Ghana, Togo, and Cote d’Ivoire.
The latest feat is coming few weeks after the nation claimed the WAFU B U20 Championship and underscored her undoubted strength in youth football when she swept to the U17 title in the region, as five-time world champions.
