JAPAN: Sam Altman, the prominent figure representing OpenAI, an organization supported by Microsoft Corp., embarked on a global tour to leverage the growing interest in generative AI and influence the regulation of this emerging technology.

During visits to various capital cities, OpenAI’s CEO expressed optimism regarding international cooperation in the field of AI. Altman conveyed to students in Tokyo that it is possible to foster global collaboration aimed at minimizing existential risks. He highlighted the ongoing efforts of regulators to adapt existing standards and establish new guidelines for the regulation of generative AI, which encompasses the generation of text and images.

Altman remains hopeful that global collaboration can be achieved soon, as regulators strive to update current standards and develop new frameworks for governing generative AI.

In terms of regulatory approaches, the European Union is progressing with the AI Act, a draft legislation that is expected to be enacted this year. Conversely, the United States is leaning towards amending existing laws to address AI rather than enacting new ones.

The discussions have been progressing positively, considering Japan’s current position as a laggard in AI services despite its renowned manufacturing sector. Altman acknowledges Japan’s long-standing tradition of inter-human cooperation while contemplating potential applications for integrating AI into various aspects of society. 

Altman’s itinerary includes visits to Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia before returning to the United States. The collaboration between humans and machines has a rich history and continues to evolve over time.
