States In India Impose Weekend Curfews To Contain The Virus Spread

States reporting a record rise in new coronavirus cases are now witnessing strict lockdown-like measures to restrict the movement of people.

INDIA: Amid rising COVID-19 cases across India, various state governments and district administrations are imposing stringent restrictions to curb the second wave.

From Jammu and Kashmir to Karnataka — states witnessing a re-surge in cases are now imposing strict lockdown-like measures to restrict the movement of people. Some states have also introduced curfews over the weekend.  

India on Thursday recorded more than 2 lakh fresh COVID-19 cases, for the second consecutive day. The country’s overall figure of the cases presently stands at over 1.42 crore.

New Delhi

To tackle the capital’s fourth Covid wave, the Delhi government on Thursday announced a weekend curfew and the closure of shopping malls, spas, gymnasiums, bars, and dine-in services.

The weekend curfew will remain active between 10 PM Friday and 5 AM on Monday. According to an order issued by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) the night curfew will remain in place till April 30.

Rajasthan

The Rajasthan government has also announced a weekend curfew across the state, which is to take place between 6 PM on Friday until 5 AM Monday.

“It is an appeal to all of you to cooperate with the government during the curfew and follow Covid appropriate behavior,” Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot tweeted on Thursday night.

Chandigarh 

Similarly, following a high-level meeting of the Chandigarh administration, a weekend curfew was imposed from Friday at 10 PM, until Monday at 5 Am. The union territory has permitted only essential services.  

The Chandigarh officials said that vaccination programs and examinations, including the NDA entrance test, will continue as scheduled. Travel will be permitted for students as long as they are able to present their admit cards. 

Uttar Pradesh

The Uttar Pradesh Government on Sunday announced a lockdown across the state. To enforce the wearing of masks, for those caught without masks for the first time, the state government has doubled the fine to Rs 1000 and 10 times the fine amount for those caught again.

Quoting Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, “There will be a weekly closure in all rural and urban areas of the state on Sunday. Only sanitation, sanitization, and emergency services will operate during this period. Necessary awareness works should also be done in this regard.”

Odisha

In a bid to break the chain of the COVID-19 infection in the state, the Odisha government on Thursday announced a weekend shutdown in 10 districts bordering Chhattisgarh, as the number of active coronavirus cases in the districts has crossed the one lakh mark.

The night curfew has been extended to all urban areas of the state from the 10 western Odisha districts implemented on April 5.
