UNITED STATES: Billionaire investor and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett, compared the creation of AI to that of the atomic bomb, raising the question of whether the technology is a game-changer or a potential threat.

The statement from the billionaire investor comes at a time when AI continues gaining traction and becoming a buzzword in the tech industry, and concerns about its potential consequences and risks are also rising.

At the annual meeting of Berkshire Hathaway in Omaha, Nebraska, Buffett expressed his apprehension about the technology, stating that while he was impressed by its vast capabilities, he was worried about its potential misuse.

“I start to become a little concerned when something can do so many different things. We invented the atomic bomb during World War II for a very, very good reason, and I know we won’t be able to reverse it,” stated Buffett.

Buffett’s concerns are not unfounded. AI can automate many tasks and processes, leading to the displacement of millions of jobs. Additionally, there are concerns about the development of autonomous weapons and the potential for AI to be misused for nefarious purposes, such as cyberattacks or deep fakes.

AI advocates contend that technology has the potential to revolutionise many areas of our life, including healthcare and transportation. Chatbots like ChatGPT, which can help with duties ranging from customer service to mental health counselling, have already been created using AI.

Additionally, AI is being utilised to develop driverless vehicles, which might ease traffic and improve safety.

Many companies and governments are investing heavily in AI research and development despite the potential risks. China, in particular, has made AI a top priority, with plans to become a world leader in technology by 2030.

Meanwhile, companies like Google, Amazon, and Facebook are also investing heavily in AI research and development.

The debate over AI’s possible consequences and benefits is likely to continue for some time. While technology can potentially change many aspects of our lives for the better, it’s essential to consider its potential risks and work to mitigate them as much as possible. It can change everything in the world, except for how men think and act, according to Buffett. And taking that step is significant.
