INDIA.Delhi. Eight Member of Parliament (MPs) were suspended from the Rajya Sabha on Sunday. The main reason behind suspension was the chaos created by the MPs during the passing of controversial farm bills on Sunday. However, the MPs refused to leave the session. The suspended members included Derek O’Brien belonging to Trinamool Congress and Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Sanjay Singh among others.

The members were suspended over a display of unruly behaviour with the Chair. The opposition leaders said during the session that the members should have been given a chance to explain. But, the Rajya Sabha said that the decision was based on a government motion.

In an open statement Rajya Sabha Chairman, Venkaiah Naidu said that the behaviour of the members was horrible. He also added that the members threw papers and mics away and also hurled abuses to the Deputy Chairman Harivansh Singh.

Trinamool Congress criticizes Rajya Sabha’s decision

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has highly criticized the suspension of the Rajya Sabha MPs. West Bengal’s chief minister and TMC leader, Mamta Banerjee has said in a statement that the incident reflects the “autocratic mindset” of the government. She even accused the BJP government of killing democracy in India. Banerjee declared that she will fight the government inside the Parliament.

TMC chief representative in Rajya Sabha, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy deplored the way the Rajya Sabha was run. In an open statement, he said that if the constitutional authorities keep violating the rules then it would be detrimental for Indian democracy. Roy further added that people from all sections must condemn such kind of development.

Senior TMC leaders and Lok Sabha MPs Mahua Moitra and Saugata Roy also condemned the suspension of the MPs.They called the decision as “undemocratic”.

However, the Deputy Chairman, Harivansh Rai had a different opinion regarding the incident. He believes that if the members continue to act disrespectfully, then it will be not accepted in the parliament. Two major farm bills were passed on Sunday by Rajya Sabha. The government called these bills as the “biggest reform” in agriculture.
