UNITED STATES: WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new “Channels ” feature, allowing users to subscribe to and receive updates from their favourite channels. According to a report by WaBetaInfo, the feature was initially rumoured to only be available on Android devices. Still, the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.8.0.75 suggests that iPhone users will also have access to the feature.

The Channels feature will replace the app’s current “Status” tab and allow users to subscribe to private channels without revealing their phone numbers or user information. Since channels don’t make sense for one-to-many communications,

Unlike individual conversations, messages received within a channel won’t be end-to-end encrypted. However, private messaging will not be impacted, and the end-to-end encryption will remain intact.

Users will have control over which channels they want to subscribe to, and no one else can see which channels they are following. Additionally, there won’t be any automatic channel subscription because no algorithmic suggestions or social networks force consumers to view things they don’t want to.

WhatsApp Channels will support handles, allowing users to search for a specific channel by simply entering its username within WhatsApp. This is designed to improve the accessibility of channels, making it easier for users to get updates that they prefer.

The Channels feature is still under development and is expected to be released in a future update. WhatsApp users can look forward to receiving updates on their favourite channels without revealing their personal information and with complete control over their subscription choices.

Adding Channels to WhatsApp will likely make the app more appealing to businesses and content creators who want to engage with their audiences directly. This feature will provide a more personalised experience for users, who will be able to subscribe to channels that interest them and receive regular updates.

The move also highlights WhatsApp’s commitment to privacy, as it ensures that user information remains protected while allowing users to control their subscription choices. As WhatsApp continues to evolve, it is clear that the app is focused on creating new features that cater to the changing needs of its users.
