Anger Management: An Art And Science Of Wellbeing

Once the person has rightly understood the dimension to their anger, and acceptance of their apparent temperament, the person climbs the first stage towards 'anger management.'

INDIA. Anger is an emotion that children and adults experience alike. When someone or something interferes negatively with a person, it can make them angry. Getting angry is a normal reaction in such a situation. However, anger can be classified as mild or intense irritation. Depending on the person, the situation, and their feelings, anger can make a person angry or even furious.

Angry humans behave differently. Some lash out or get extremely defensive. Others keep their anger to themselves, repressing and hurting their negative feelings. While some people become careless and even abusive. Anger can be a harmful emotion if it is not channelized.

Acknowledge anger, respond with control

The first step to controlling anger is to acknowledge that there is an apparent problem. Individuals who have trouble admitting their anger and accepting responsibility for their actions often play the blame game. Blame it on other’s actions, while a person gets angry is a natural reaction that is completely misunderstood. One needs to ponder! Thinking, that the anger can really destroy itself by getting angry.

The angry person releases certain chemicals in the brain, which are detrimental to his/her own health and wellbeing e.g.; the release of adrenaline, hypertension, acid-headache, and muscle contractions or spasms. Instead of blaming the other person, he/she has to learn to respond to an anger-provoking situation. They need to look at anger management instead.

  • Remain calm and do not react but respond instead.
  • Find a solution to deal with an instant rage.
  • Use humor, as an opposite to anger.

What could be the sudden reaction?

  • A rage, a feeling of disrespect.
  • A Feeling of diffidence.
  • Lack of self-esteem.
  • Feeling insulted.

The inability to acknowledge these factors can push someone to throw anger by abusing others. This reactive temperament leads to a lack of help or support in resolving anger than making it worse. If a person continues on this path he/she can lead to a magnified situation and consequent health hazards.

Manage anger to lead a quality life

Once the person has rightly understood the dimension to their anger, and acceptance of their apparent temperament, the person climbs the first stage towards ‘anger management.’ This acceptance and responsibility to self-control lead to a better quality of life. Anger management is designed to help individuals solve their problems, help them figure out why they are so angry. It also teaches one not to be a slave to one’s emotions, one’s anger. The purpose of anger management is to understand the root cause which in most cases is the person itself and not the surroundings.

There are all kinds of anger management strategies. There are programs specifically designed to help people with issues of anger. These programs have been broken down to address individual people, children, teens, adults, couples, and families. These anger management programs are meant to teach or help people to work with their anger. In anger management, it is important to teach people strategies to solve their problems and control their anger.

Anger can be a healthy emotion, under normal circumstances. Small irritations, can lead to higher degrees of irritations, and eventually, a person becomes temperamentally aggressive and negative.

If used positively, it can bring good and healthy results e.g; when a team of executives in an office environment is functioning, the team leader can become a role model to the other members, by demonstrating his/her own behavior. How he/she controls his emotions in a dreadfully volatile and stressful situation. Anger management is taught as a personality-building feature in most successful organizations.

Human beings are the core of any successful organization. If human capital becomes defunct, the organization is sure to deteriorate in the quality and competence of its team members consequently their teams’ morale can get immensely depleted. As management strategy by objectives and good governance, the emotional content of a person’s life must be at the heart of any good and successful organization.

A stress-free person who can manage the feeling of anger can eventually become more successful and get transformed as a healthy individual, maintaining a healthy life balance.
