TURKEY: A suicide bomber detonated an explosive device in Ankara, Turkey, just before parliament’s reconvening after a three-month summer break. A second attacker died in a gunfight with police. Two police officers were injured, and Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported that two officers were mildly hurt near a Ministry of Interior Affairs entrance.

A deadly attack occurred near parliament’s reopening and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s scheduled speech. The attackers are unknown, but previous lethal attacks have been carried out by Kurdish, far-left, and Islamic State factions across Turkey.

Yerlikaya claimed the attackers rode into the location in a light commercial truck. In the region, which is close to the Turkish Grand National Assembly and other official buildings, a television video showed bomb squads working close to a parked car. Near the truck, a rocket launcher could be seen lying on the ground.

According to Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc, a probe into the “terror attack” has been started. He stated on X that these attacks “will in no way hinder Turkey’s fight against terrorism.” “We’ll be more determined in our fight against terrorism.”

The city centre was sealed off by police, who also tightened security measures and informed the public that they would be conducting controlled explosions of suspicious items. The two police officers, according to accounts in the media, were receiving treatment in a hospital and weren’t in critical condition.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has stated that the government’s commitment to combating “terrorism” will not be impeded by the Ankara incident. He wished for the swift recovery of the injured police officers and expressed his best wishes to the Interior Ministry staff. Fidan also pledged to continue fighting terrorism with tenacity, both domestically and internationally.
