FIFA World Cup 2022: Croatia Defeats Morocco 2-1 in the Third-place Playoff

0

QATAR:  Josko Gvardiol and Mislav Orsic scored magnificent goals as Croatia defeated Morocco 2-1 to finish third at the World Cup for the second time.

Even though Luka Modric, the 37-year-old Croatian captain, has yet to conclude his international career, the victory also sees him win a bronze medal in what is most likely to be his final appearance in the FIFA World Cup.

Croatia’s winning game sends Morocco to the losing side

With Croatia’s victory, a European nation has now won the third-place playoff in the last 11 tournaments, and Morocco missed out on the chance to become the first African nation to win a World Cup medal.

Croatia started the match by dictating and applying pressure. They almost got Yassine Bonou to put the ball in his net with a pass that was very close to the goal.

Gvardiol, an impressive 20-year-old centre-back, scored a stunning diving header for Croatia in the 7th minute to cap a successful tournament.

However, Morocco responded soon as Achraf Dari nodded home from short proximity, only two minutes after Gvardiol’s opener.

Josko Gvardiol, a defender, has been one of the World Cup’s standout performers. But in the 42nd minute, Croatia took back the lead with a beautiful curling goal from Orsic. His first-time effort inside the box deflected off the far post and past Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Dominik Livakovic of Croatia stopped Youssef En-Nesyri from scoring a late equalizer for Morocco, giving them their second World Cup bronze medal since 1998.

Four years ago, Croatia finished as runners-up in Russia. They had hoped to reach the final in Qatar, but on Tuesday, Argentina defeated them 3-0 in the semi-finals.

Morocco is the only African team that has ever reached this stage of the World Cup. However, the superb efforts from Josko Gvardiol and Mislav Orsic and the equally brilliant performance from the Croatian defence and goalkeeper meant that Morocco could not stake a claim for the bronze medal.

0

UNITED KINGDOM: With the announcement that the AMR23 will break cover in 2023, Aston Martin has confirmed the first launch date for the team’s car, which will compete in the F1 2023 season.

Even though the F1 2022 season has just ended, teams are already focussing on the 2023 season. The 2023 F1 season marks the second year of the new aero regulations.

Aston Martin unveils upcoming car launch details

The first of the ten teams to set a date for unveiling their 2023 F1 challenger, the 2023 Aston Martin, has had its launch date confirmed.

On Monday, February 13th, at 7 p.m. UK time, the public will have the opportunity to view the AMR23.

https://twitter.com/AstonMartinF1/status/1603751804428132353

Aston Martin will hold the launch in front of a select group at its new Silverstone facility and live-stream the event across its digital channels.

Lance Stroll and his new teammate Fernando Alonso will drive the new car. The two-time World Champion has joined the British team after two years with Alpine. After his first day of testing with Aston Martin in Abu Dhabi, he said he was happy with his new team.

The new car will be unveiled ten days before the official three-day Formula 1 test, which serves as the only on-track preparation for teams before the season begins.

Testing for F1 will take place in Bahrain from Thursday, February 23rd, to Saturday, February 25th, with the Bahrain GP taking place the following weekend on Sunday, March 5th.

Following his departure from Red Bull, Aston Martin’s technical director Dan Fallows confirmed that he has been in charge of AMR23’s development since its inception.

He has also been impressed by what he has seen during his time with the team thus far; Aston Martin employees will move into their brand-new factory building in the middle of 2023, and the team will open its in-house wind tunnel in 2024.

Following a tour of the new Aston Martin factory, Fallows described Aston Martin’s engineering team as a “hugely passionate” and “very talented group of people.” He added that some Aston Martin engineers have been in F1 for a very long time and have tremendous experience.

Fallows added that the main thing for the British team is to ensure proper utilization of experience and passion while simultaneously trying to develop the team into a race-winning outfit.

Search Operations Underway for Missing Hawaiian Medical Transport Plane

0

UNITED STATES: A medical transport plane with three crew members onboard, traveling between Maui and the Big Island in Hawaii, has vanished. According to the US Coast Guard, the Hawaii Life Flight airplane was a King Air twin-engine prop plane.

The Honolulu Control Facility reported the loss of radar contact with the aircraft approximately 15 nautical miles offshore, south of Hana, Maui, according to the US Coast Guard.

A company statement released on Friday said that the Global Medical Response confirms that one of the Hawaii Life Flight emergency airplanes in Maui lost radar contact while en route to pick up a patient in Waimea, Big Island.

It stated that the patient was not aboard the plane, which lost radar contact around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday. According to the statement, the company is reaching out to the families of the crew members onboard.

Additionally, the company is also assisting search and rescue teams. In the Pacific Ocean’s Maui Channel, approximately 27 kilometres south of Hana, Maui, the Coast Guard reported that aircraft controllers lost radar contact with the aircraft.

The US Coast Guard is searching for the missing airplane with boats, a helicopter, and a cargo plane. The guard claimed that one of its aircraft observed a sheen in the search area. It also said that one of its patrol boats found debris in the area, but it wasn’t sure if it was from the plane that went missing.

According to Global Medical Response, Hawaii Life Flight transports have been suspended temporarily. Lead representative Josh Green gave a crisis declaration permitting the state to enhance Hawaii’s clinical flight limit with airplanes and groups from different states.

Green said that he is working with Hawaii Life Flight and multiple US government agencies to guarantee continuous emergency transport between the islands of Hawaii.

Compared to the larger hospitals in Honolulu, many smaller hospitals on Hawaii’s more remote islands offer fewer medical services.

More serious, urgent conditions frequently necessitate transport to Oahu for treatment. Green, who is also a doctor, and before becoming governor this month, worked as an emergency room doctor on the Big Island for a long time.

F1 Academy Announces 5 Teams Competing for the All-women Series for 3 Years

0

UNITED KINGDOM: The all-women F1 Academy series has confirmed the team roster for its 2023 debut season.

The 15-car grid comprises three cars each from ART Grand Prix, Campos Racing, PREMA Racing, MP Motorsport, and Carlin, with five seasoned teams competing in junior categories.

F1 is set to bring five teams for all-women series

The all-women driver category will be added to each team’s motorsport setup starting next year. Each team has a long history in junior racing, including the Formula 2 and Formula 3 Championships.

With Felipe Drugovich, MP Motorsport won the 2022 F2 Teams’ and Drivers’ Championships. Thanks to ART Grand Prix, Victor Martins won the F3 Drivers’ Championship this year, and PREMA Racing won their third F3 Teams’ Championship in 2022.

Carlin assisted Logan Sargeant in moving up from Formula 2 to a seat in the Williams Formula 1 team in 2023, and Campos Racing won the Spanish F4 championship this season.

Young women drivers in the junior ranks are the focus of Formula one Academy, which helps them advance to higher levels of single-seater racing like the W Series, F3, F2, and F1.

Each driver will contribute €150,000, which the series will match, while the teams will cover the remainder of the budget. The subsidized money contribution system indicates that the series will position itself as a less expensive alternative to comparable series.

The first season will consist of seven events. Due to the ’23 team comprises such experienced teams, the drivers will gain meaningful experience inside and outside the car to help them reach their full potential.

Formula 1’s President and CEO, Stefano Domenicali, said that the announcement of the five teams that will compete with each other in the F1 Academy next year is exciting. He added that the F1 academy would provide young, talented women with the opportunity to begin their careers in motorsport.

Bruno Michel, the F1 Academy’s general manager, expressed his thrill in announcing the five teams participating in the F1 Academy for the next three years, which will begin in 2023. According to Michel, the teams are well-known to the management board and have worked together for a long time.

He said the teams are well-known for their expertise in fostering and developing young drivers and their years of experience. He believes that the teams assist the drivers competing in the F1 Academy with the platform to develop physically and mentally for their future.

Russia Prepares a Nuclear Missile Capable of Reaching US and UK

0

RUSSIA: Russian President Vladimir Putin has reasserted his nuclear threat to the West by appearing to be getting ready to use a massive nuclear missile capable of hitting the United States and the United Kingdom.

A video released on Wednesday captured the setting up of a massive Yars rocket in a silo launch pad at the Kaluga region’s Kozelsk military compound. The Kaluga region is situated southwest of Moscow.

According to the media, the intercontinental ballistic missile installed in the silo with a special vehicle for transporting and loading has a range of 7,500 miles.

According to Russian media outlets, the Yars missile complex has a power “12 times greater” than the nuclear bomb deployed by America that destroyed Hiroshima.

Vladimir Putin presided over the launch of a similar Yars missile in October to test Russia’s response to a potential nuclear attack amid high tensions over the Ukrainian conflict.

Russia has been demonstrating its nuclear-capable armour ahead of the annual Strategic Missile Forces Day on December 17th.

The missile force commander, Col. Alexi Sokolov, said the most recent drill intended to make an impression on the West given that both Europe and the USA are within the rocket’s reach.

He said that the missile would be put on combat duty “on schedule” and asserted the importance of the operation.

Sokolov added that the Russian “homeland” would receive another nuclear missile weapon, enabling the resolution of any strategic tasks.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry on Wednesday, it deployed specialised transport and loading units to install the missile in the silo, which took several hours. The Kozelsk rocket base is going through a remodelling process.

The announcement of the preparations comes just a few days after Putin cancelled his annual year-end press conference, raising more questions about his deteriorating health and the worries over Russia’s failed 10-month invasion of Ukraine.

Amazon is Set to Publish the Next Instalment of Tomb Raider Game Lineup

0

UNITED STATES: Amazon Games and Lara Croft will collaborate on the next big adventure to bring upcoming Tomb Raider title. Crystal Dynamics has announced that it will use Epic’s Unreal Engine 5 to develop the next game, which will continue to be handled by the studio.

Amazon to bring upcoming Tomb Raider game title

In 2018, the game series released its final instalment. Square Enix published Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Crystal Dynamics developed it.

It was generally well-received by critics and fans, but Embracer Group purchased the franchise rights earlier this year.

In a statement to the media, Christoph Hartmann, the vice president of Amazon Games, referred to Tomb Raider as one of the “most beloved IPs” in entertainment history.

Hartmann added that it is an honour for Amazon to work with the storied developer and franchise. He said that Amazon Games is committed to bringing high-quality games from the best developers across multiple platforms and genres to gamers.

With Tomb Raider: Legend in 2006, Crystal Dynamics assumed responsibility for the franchise’s development and have worked on every game that has been made up to this point, including the reboot trilogy, which just came to an end.

Scot Amos, Crystal Dynamics’ head of the studio, said that Crystal Dynamics has an extraordinary opportunity following the acquisition by Embracer to redefine what a publishing relationship is for Tomb Raider.

The untitled Tomb Raider will be the third published game in Amazon’s catalogue. It is also accountable for bringing the well-known Korean MMO Lost Ark to the West and will publish the upcoming MMO Blue Protocol from Bandai Namco.

Crystal Dynamics, a game studio based in California, created the action-adventure game Tomb Raider, in which Lara Croft, a British archaeologist, explores unexplored tombs worldwide, solving puzzles and battling villains.

The franchise has also influenced numerous feature films. The upcoming game, which does not yet have a release date and is still in its early stages of development, is still being developed by Crystal Dynamics.

However, Amazon will be the publisher, which means that it is collaborating closely with Crystal Dynamics on “creative support” and is in charge of things like marketing, shipping the book to various online and retail outlets, and advertising.

The upcoming Tomb Raider game will be Amazon Games’ first major single-player title. The company struggled for years to break into the challenging game development industry before eventually finding success with multiplayer online games.

It could be a significant step for Amazon to include a flagship, single-player game in its portfolio, which would also increase the company’s industry credibility.

Berlin’s Largest Aquarium Damaged: Water from the “AquaDom” Seeps into the Street

0

GERMANY: Police and firefighters announced on Friday that a 14-metre-high “AquaDom” aquarium in a hotel in central Berlin burst in the early hours of the day, necessitating the closure of a nearby street due to the leaking water.

Two people were injured by glass shards, according to Berlin police on Twitter, and the incident also caused “incredible maritime damage.”

https://twitter.com/runews/status/1603652991000760321?s=46&t=OsTLFjxemB10hds_j5d8MA

A police spokeswoman told AFP that the incident at the AquaDom aquarium occurred around 5:50 in the morning.

The cylindrical aquarium, home to approximately 1,500 tropical fish, contains over a million gallons of water.

It is built inside a Radisson Blu hotel’s foyer and features a clear-walled elevator that guests of the Sea Life entertainment complex can use.

Berlin’s fire department tweeted that more than one hundred emergency personnel were on the scene.

In the tweet, Berlin’s firefighting service adds that the water is leaking from the severely damaged aquarium. The cause of the incident is still unclear and is under investigation.

On Twitter, the Berlin police advised motorists to avoid the area, stating that the aquarium is “massively” leaking water.

Berlin’s public transportation office stated on Twitter that due to a huge amount of water on the road, the nearby Karl-Liebknecht Street had been partially closed off.

The AquaDom is the world’s largest cylindrical freestanding aquarium, according to the Sea Life website.

Early on Friday, photos and videos that appeared to be taken by hotel guests showed extensive damage to the transparent aquarium and spread throughout the ground floor of the hotel.

The debris from the shattered aquarium also spilled out onto the streets. The AquaDom in Berlin, Germany, is a cylindrical aquarium made of acrylic glass with a transparent elevator.

Upon arrival at the opulent hotel, the AquaDom aquarium greeted the guests. Visitors could have a drink or eat under it, located just below the aquarium and above the hotel bar.

To get a closer look at the fish in the aquarium, people could get to a two-story glass platform in the middle using a transparent lift.

Production of the Audi Q8 E-Tron and Q8 E-Tron Sportback Begins in Brussels

BELGIUM: On December 14, Audi’s plant in Brussels, Belgium, began producing the Q8 e-Tron and Q8 e-Tron Sportback in series.

The e-Tron SUV, Audi’s first production EV, has been produced at the factory for approximately 160,000 units since 2018.

In 2021, Audi Brussels alone manufactured 43,866 all-electric e-Tron and e-Tron Sportback vehicles, the forerunners of the Q8 models now being marketed under that name.

The Audi Q4 e-Tron, which will also be manufactured at the plant beginning in the second half of 2023 at a rate of approximately 70 units per day, is expected to increase production significantly next year.

Currently, the Q4 e-Tron is made solely at the Volkswagen Gathering plant in Zwickau, Germany.

The Audi Q8 e-Tron and Q8 e-Tron Sportback, the facelifted and renamed versions of the e-Tron and e-Tron Sportback, can be produced at the facility until then.

Audi says the Brussels office is a model for supportability and executing the fate of creation at the organization, the purported “360factory.”

Since the production of the Audi e-Tron began in 2018, the location has been recognised as the first certified carbon-neutral high-volume production plant in the premium car segment in the world.

Since 2012, one of the largest photovoltaic systems in the region has been using green electricity to power the Audi Brussels plant’s premises, which cover 107,000 square metres (26.44 acres).

The system uses renewable energy every year to produce about 9,000 megawatt-hours of power, enough to power approximately 90,000 Audi Q8 e-Tron vehicles and cut carbon emissions by 1,881 tons.

Additionally, the battery cell suppliers are required to produce only renewable energy sources, and eco-friendly freight trains transport the electric traction motors from Györ, Hungary, to Brussels; this diminishes fossil fuel by-products by around 2,600 tonnes every year.

The Audi Q8 e-Tron and Q8 e-Tron Sportback are more efficient, have better aerodynamics, charge faster, and have more battery power.

The larger 115-kWh battery pack increased the WLTP range to 600 kilometres in the Sportback and 582 kilometres in the SUV.

Samsung SDI cells power both e-Tron batteries in the Audi Q8, whereas LG cells power the original e-Tron.

The large battery is likely to have a range rating of over 300 miles, although the EPA has not yet announced it. It is anticipated that the Audi Q8, e-Tron SUV, and Sportback models will arrive at US dealerships in the middle of 2023.

Mercedes Announce Mick Schumacher as Their F1 Reserve Driver for 2023

UNITED KINGDOM: Following his departure from Haas, Mercedes confirmed that Mick Schumacher will take over the reserve driver role in 2023.

Mick Schumacher, the F2 champion in 2020, raced for Haas for two seasons before being replaced by Nico Hulkenberg for 2023. The team wanted Hulkenberg’s vast experience of 181 Grands Prix to help them advance in the middle of the field.

Mick Schumacher joins Mercedes

After learning of Schumacher’s departure from Haas, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff made it clear that he wanted to “look after” the German, pointing to his family’s connections to Mercedes.

Before becoming an F1 driver, Mick’s seven-time champion father, Michael, raced for Mercedes in sportscars and the DTM. He finished his career at the Silver Arrows after spending three years from 2010 to 2012 with them. Meanwhile, Mick’s uncle Ralf and cousin David have also raced for Mercedes in various categories.

Wolff spoke about the confirmation that Schumacher would step up into Mercedes’ reserve role. The team’s two 2022 reserve drivers, Nyck de Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne, found seats at AlphaTauri and Aston Martin (reserve driver), respectively, for next year.

https://twitter.com/MercedesAMGF1/status/1603344348803915778

Wolff expressed his delight to welcome Mick to the team, calling him a talented young driver. He praised Mick’s hard-working, calm and systematic approach to F1.

Toto Wolff added that Mick, with two years of experience racing in Formula One under his belt, will be ready to step into the car to replace either Lewis Hamilton or George Russell if needed.

Regarding his new role, Schumacher said he was thrilled to be the reserve driver for the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team in 2023 and pledged to do everything to improve the team’s performance in the “highly competitive” nature of F1.

He termed his alliance with Mercedes as a fresh start and expressed his gratitude to Toto Wolff and everyone involved in his signing. He says he is looking forward to “learning more and putting in his best effort” for the Mercedes team in the “fascinating world” of F1.

Ferrari on Thursday also announced that it will be ending its collaboration with Mick Schumacher, whose father, Michael Schumacher, had won five F1 title with the Italian team.

Protests Prompt Peru’s New Government to Declare a National Emergency

PERU: Peru’s newly elected government declared a national emergency on Wednesday as it struggled to contain violent protests over President Pedro Castillo’s ouster. It suspended the rights to “personal security and freedom” throughout the Andean nation for 30 days.

Peru declares national emergency as protests errupt

Defense Minister Luis Otarola Pearanda stated that highway blockades, vandalism, and acts of violence, while thousands of Peruvians are on the streets require a strong response from the government.

The declaration grants the police, aided by the military, the authority to search individuals’ homes without permission or judicial order and the suspension of the rights to assembly and freedom of movement. Otarola stated that whether there would be a night-time curfew is still undecided.

Jorge Aragón, a professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, who teaches political science, said that the issues have been increasing in a manner that questions the state of law and order in the country.

He said that the decree is a way of grabbing back certain minimum stability for the proper functioning of the country. He added that “the emergency is also the recognition that the government cannot achieve the desired stability without that use of force.”

The defence minister stated that the council of ministers approved the declaration. It did not mention Dina Boluarte, Peru’s new president, sworn in by Congress just hours after lawmakers removed Castillo. As demonstrations against her and Congress continued, Boluarte pleaded for calm.

Boluarte floated the possibility of scheduling general elections for December 2023 to columnists not long before a conference to decide if Castillo would stay imprisoned for quite some time while specialists fabricate a disobedience body of evidence against him.

After Castillo refused to participate, the judge moved the hearing forward. Officials expelled Castillo on December 7th after he tried to dissolve the Congress ahead of their third impeachment attempt.

As he and his security team drove through the streets of Lima, the Peruvian police stopped their vehicle and took him into custody. The prosecution accused him of attempting to get political asylum at the Mexican Embassy.
