Canada Truck Accident Kills Two, Injures Nine

CANADA: Police reported that two men were killed and nine other walkers were hurt when they were struck by a truck on Monday. A 38-year-old man has been detained, according to Quebec police spokesperson Helene St. Pierre, and authorities are investigating whether the event in the town of Amqui, which is north of Quebec City, was intentional.

“Everything indicates that this is an isolated event. There is no more danger in the area and only one suspect,” she said.

Provincial police say that the man is being held at a nearby police station and is talking to officers there. There is still no information on the crash’s cause or potential motives. The ages of the two dead are 60 and 70, respectively. According to the police, three minors are also among those hurt.

The incident occurred soon after 3 p.m. in Amqui’s downtown. The conditions of two of the wounded are critical. According to eyewitnesses, a truck struck several pedestrians on a walkway before driving another 400–500 metres along the road and hitting more people.

Another witness described the incident scene as being “desolation” on the radio show Ici Radio-Canada Télék.

In a tweet, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, Marco Mendicino, expressed his shock and sadness over the situation and referred to the occurrence as a “horrific act of violence.”
