CHILE: While the South American nation of Chile experiences a scorching summer across the southern and central regions of the country, wildfires have killed four people and burned about 8,000 hectares (19,700 acres) of land.

The government has declared a catastrophe in the Biobo region, joining the neighbouring region of Uble, which President Gabriel Boric announced on Thursday night, according to Interior Minister Carolina Toha on Friday morning.

Highway travel has been hampered by the fires, and many municipalities have been evacuated. 146 blazes have been put out by authorities so far.

The capital of Ubé, Chillán, was expected to reach temperatures of over 100°F (38°C) on Friday. The National Forestry Corporation cautioned that strong winds are also predicted for the area, which might make the fire conditions worse.
