David Zaslav’s joining as the CEO of Warner Bros. led to major changes in the earlier-named DCEU (Detective Comics Extended Universe). His leadership also appointed new bosses for the now-named DCU.

Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad fame James Gunn and Conjuring Universe producer Peter Safran joined as the new heads of the DC Studios in October 2022.

The chairpersons and the CEO of DC Studios announced new master plans for the future of DCU. Today, James Gunn posted a series of tweets on his Twitter handle.

The filmmaker wrote, “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.”

He went on to say that Superman is one of the upcoming characters, and the story will revolve around a younger version of the Man of Steel. He continued that Henry Cavill will not portray the character.

On the other hand, Henry Cavill also announced the sad news on his Instagram handle. The Hollywood actor wrote, “I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that.”

“James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes,” he continued.

Cavill also thanked the fans for their support. Expressing his gratitude he wrote, “For those who have been by my side through the years…..we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember…. Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”

Reacting to the post, internet users expressed their feelings in the comments sections. Zachary Levi, known for portraying the role of Shazam, wrote, “Hope to catch you in another universe, sir.” One fan added, “it’s a sad day.”

Besides Superman, Henry Cavill also announced his exit from Netflix’s The Witcher series. In October 2022, the actor announced that he will no longer play the role of Geralt of Rivia, and Liam Hemsworth will serve as the torchbearer of the series.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom land as the upcoming DC titles of 2023. Jason Momoa, who currently serves as the King of Atlantis, is rumoured to play Lobo in the DCU’s new plan.

This news raises a new question among fans: will both films serve as canon for DC Studios, or will they just be filler for future projects?
