PALESTINE: On Tuesday, a hunger striker from Palestine died in Israeli custody that created a lot of unrest between the military group in Gaza and Israel up till when both parties had conceded to a ceasefire.

Before that the military group was firing rocket barrages to Israel striking Israeli jets in light of the death of a notable political leader, Khader Adnan who belonged to the Jihad group of the Palestinian Islamic group in the prison after a hunger strike that lasted for 87 days.

In a statement, Islamic Jihad stated, “Our fight is continuing and the enemy will realise once again that its crimes will not pass without a response.”

Adnan, a 45-year-old baker and father of nine from Jenin in the West Bank that is under Israeli control. Even though it has an insignificant presence in the West Bank, Islamic Jihad is the second-most powerful armed force in Gaza, where Israeli forces participated in a skirmish last August.

Israel’s Prisons Service claimed that Adnan, who was in detention awaiting trial, was discovered unresponsive in his cell and shipped to a hospital where he was ultimately declared dead notwithstanding efforts to revive him.

In more than 30 years, he was the only Palestinian on a hunger strike to pass away while being imprisoned by Israel.

Adnan’s death, which Palestinian leaders characterised as an assassination, spurred hundreds of Palestinians to assemble in the streets of the occupied Palestinian territory.

An umbrella network of armed Palestinian factions in Gaza, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, took culpability for a daytime missile bombardment on Israel.

Talking from the northern West Bank town of Arraba close to Jenin, Adnan’s wifr, Randa Musa mentioned, “Our message to all the resistance groups is, we do not want the weapons that were not used to free the sheikh (Adnan) to be used after his death. We do not want to see any bloodshed.”

Adnan has staged at least three hunger strikes in protest of Israel’s prolonged imprisonment of him without criminal prosecution since 2011. Other Palestinian prisoners had employed the same technique before, sometimes in massive numbers, but nobody had died since 1992.

Israeli officials were accused of depriving Adnan medical treatment by his attorney Jamil Al-Khatib and a doctor from a human rights organisation who recently met him.
