SAO TOME and PRINCIPE: As part of its outreach efforts, the Embassy of India organized a Special Yoga Session at its premises on April 23. About 15 women from the diplomatic core, the UN, the WHO, and academic organisations joined the yoga session. They enthusiastically followed the standard yoga regimen.

The event served as a warm-up for the International Day of Yoga, which will be held on June 21, 2022. Yoga is a priceless gift from India’s ancient culture. It is beneficial to our health and well-being because it embodies the union of mind and body, thinking and action. Yoga is more than simply a kind of exercise; it’s a means to connect with yourself, the world, and nature.

It’s no wonder that India, as the birthplace of yoga, is spearheading global efforts to publicise its universal appeal and proven health benefits. India, on the other hand, does not consider it to be its property, which is why it seeks to spread it throughout the world.

As a result, when India’s Prime Minister proposed a draught resolution to establish the International Day of Yoga at the United Nations’ 69th session in 2014, the resolution was ratified by the UN with the backing of 177 member states, including Sao Tome.

Consequently, the UN declared June 21 to be the International Day of Yoga (IDY). The International Day of Non-Violence is also observed on June 21.

The inaugural IDY was inaugurated by India’s Prime Minister on June 21, 2015. The occasion was commemorated and honoured in 170 nations, including the United States, China, and Canada. Since then, this Day has been honoured by an ever-increasing number of people who have taken up yoga, and it has taken on the form of a popular movement.

The Government of India created a Common Yoga Protocol, which is a uniform pattern utilised across the globe during celebrations of the International Days of Yoga, to guarantee that participants’ enthusiasm in practising yoga does not cease with the IDY, but continues long afterward.

The Embassy’s regular weekly yoga lessons have sparked a lot of interest among the citizens of Sao Tome. On June 21, 2022, the Embassy plans to host the International Day of Yoga in Sao Tome at a suitable outdoor venue.
