UK and US Warn of Possible Attack in Nigeria’s Capital

NIGERIA: The United States and Britain issued a warning over a potential terrorist assault in Abuja, the federal capital of Nigeria. As per the reports, the attack will target government structures, houses of worship, and educational institutions.

Nigeria is battling an Islamist insurgency, which is primarily in the northeast. However, in July, the Islamic State claimed credit for a raid on an Abuja jail that resulted in the release of about 440 prisoners, sparking concerns that terrorists were leaving their strongholds.

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria stated that “there is an elevated risk of terror attacks in Nigeria, specifically Abuja,” and added that other sites at risk included shopping centers, jails, and foreign organizations.

The American Embassy in Nigeria informed its nationals in a notice that limited services would be provided until further notice.

The government of the United Kingdom issued a warning to its residents in Nigeria, stating that there was an “increased threat of terrorist attack in Abuja.”
